AP Language and Composition Current Events Blog for Week of September 8

Benjamin Franklin once wrote a variant of the following quote: "Those who give up their liberty for more security deserve neither liberty nor security."

With this idea in mind, read the following article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/07/us/redactions-in-us-memo-leave-doubts-on-data-surveillance-program.html?_r=0

After you have read the article, answer the following questions.  PLEASE NOTE, your answer, if asked for, must be EXPLAINED.  A simple "yes" or "no" answer is not sufficient reason for you to receive credit for this assignment.

1. Define and describe Stellarwind.
2. What does the ACLU have to do with the Stellarwind program?
3. What does redacted mean?
4. What is FISA?
5. Who is Edward Snowden?  What did he do?  In your opinion, is he a criminal?
6. Most would agree that the government should be able to actively monitor the daily activity of those it considers to be suspects for terrorism, but does the government have the right to monitor your phone calls, emails, texts, and so on?  What about your friends?  Your parents?

    1. Warrant less surveillance cameras and data collection activities, that George W. Bush secretly installed after September 11, 2001.
    2. They released a more heavily redacted version of the memo in 2011 as part of the Freedom of Information Act.
    3. To put in writing; to select or adapt for publication or release; to remove fro text (Merriam Webster)
    4.Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
    5. He was a former N.S.A. contractor, who leaked the memo from the ACLU. In my opinion he isn't a criminal. He wanted to show the U.S. that we would be secretly watched.
    6. This is a frustrating question. I think that it is smart to be able to hack terrorist phones, but you never know who a terrorist is until something happens, but I disagree with the trying to hack my phone, y friends phone or my parents phone If it is for a good reason they could, but i don't plan on killing anyone anytime soon.

    1. Stellarwind is a program set up by George W Bush after 9/11 to monitor data.

    2. It is currently in a lawsuit to prove that it is unlawful for the government to view your phone calls

    3. to select or adapt

    4. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is an act that shows how much the federal government can view your calls and emails

    5. Person who released documents showing that the intention of the 2004 crisis was to review internet metadata

    6. Well the government is a top security organization. Therefore everything they review is confidential and will not get out to the public. However if you are doing something illegal then it should and will be found. Yes it is acceptable as long as everything they review is confidential with them unless the person they are reviewing is doing something illegal.

    1. Stellarwind was a program put in place during the Bush administration that wiretapped phones and emails after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
2.They filled a lawsuit and released a memo containing information pertaining information on the subject.
    3. to keep hidden
    4. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
    5. He released previously unknown information in 2013. yes, technically, since he gave out information he was not supposed to about the government.
    6. If one felt it was okay for the government to monitor suspected terrorists then they should also be okay with them having the right to monitor the activity of "normal" Americans. for all they know any of us could be plotting to end America. it should not just be based on assumptions. That's not the kind of "liberty and equality" we Americans believe in...

    1. Stellarwind is a company which has video surveillance on everyone. They have surveillance on phone calls and emails.
    2. ACLU made notice of how the Stellarwind program were making video surveillance and keeping surveillance on our phone calls and emails.
    3. edit for publication.
    4. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
    5. He is the founder of the Stellarwind program, He came up with the idea with George W. Bush. Yes he is a criminal, because he is invading our privacy. But then again they are trying to keep us safe and making sure that we aren't terrorist. But I also think that he shouldn't be going through our privacy even if they are trying to keep us safe.
    6. No, the government shouldn't have the right to monitor our phones. It's invading everyone's privacy. They shouldn't invade anyone's privacy at all. They wouldn't want people invading their phones and monitoring their phone so why should they be able to monitor us when we aren't showing terrorism activities.

A set of warrantless surveillance and data collection activities authorized by George Bush after 9/11 that allowed the government to monitor and collect emails, phone calls, and text messages.
The ACLU sued the government because of Stellarwind causing the government to release details about Stellarwind.
Redact-to select or adapt for publication or release.
    FISA- Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Edward Snowden is a former NSA contractor who released information about Stellarwind. I don't think he is a criminal because he released information not vital to national security that the people of America needed to know considering it violates our constitutional rights in my opinion.
The government only has the right to monitor that of suspected terrorists, not that of every citizen in America. What is the point of having freedom if you are constantly being watched?

    6. I believe that the government has gone way to far when monoriting phone calls and emails and such. to stop terrorists they need to find more efficient ways than wasting their time on monoriting phones.

    6. I do not agree that the government has the right to listen in on and read things that come to us in our private lives unless we are being accused of or were involved in something against the law. If we had committed a crime or threatened our country then yes they do have the right because they are trying to protect the people of our country. Also, if someone sends you a threatening email or tells us that they are going to blow up a building or something like that then yes but just listening in on our private conversations just because they can is not right this is a free country and if they want to be a dictating country that controls everything in our personal lives then they need to go to another country and do it because this is not the place for that nor will it ever be the place for that

    5. Edward Snowden was a computer professional for the NSA who, after leaking thousands of classified documents to the public, flied to Russia where he is currently in temporary asylum.
    6. The federal government, just as they have before in the TSA Pre-Check system at airports, should use data to assess risk factors before deciding who's worth monitoring. Using data to determine this list allows for people who have a lower risk factor to have the security of not constantly breathing down your back, but still have the potential terrorists worrying about the government monitoring their potential terrorist activities.

    5. Edward Snowden is a former N.S.A. contractor. He leaked classified government surveillance, which in my opinion, is a crime. Leaking classified information is in most cases unacceptable.
    6. I think that all suspect individuals should be monitored. If there is anything specifically unusual, unusual enough to alert the authorities, then by all means he or she should be under surveillance. However, normal citizens, such as myself, my parents, and my friends should not be as accessible as those suspected of criminal activity.

    5. He is a man who leaked the Presidents secrets about listening and reading emails and phone calls between Americans. In my opinion I do not think he is a criminal because although he did go behind the governments back, the people of America have a right to know.
    6. The government does have a right to monitor a phone and etc. if that person is a suspect of terrorism or any kind of crime that can out Americans in danger. Yet, if you are only leaking information that is not detrimental to the Country then to me you aren't a criminal. in my opinion I believe it would be best for anybody working in the government like that to keep everything confidential.
    6. Yes I do believe they should be able to monitor our personal devices in order to keep the country the safe. 5. Edward Snowden released emails and phone data to the public that was secretly kept by the Stellarwing program. I believe Snowden is a criminal because emails and things you keep on your phone are personal. They should not be leaked to the public or even kept in secrecy for that matter.
    6. I believe the government should monitor everyone's daily activities if they are suspected for terrorism or any other harsh crime (i.e. murder, rape, domestic violence, abuse of any kind, etc.). If the government does not see an issue with your daily activities they should not be able to watch them or even condemn you for them. We have rights to our privacy. 1. Stellarwind is a program made for one purpose: to prevent future terrorist attacks by warrant-less surveillance and data collection such as intercepting emails and texts. However it appears that the information was not being collected legally and there has been security issues such as leaks. The program has also refused to publicize critical information about the project most likely because there is more going on than is being openly admitted. The public's fear is that the program is being used to spy on average citizens which voids their right to privacy.
    2. ACLU appears to be concerned about the Stellarwind program as people within ACLU have stated that “They have continued to keep redacted something very significant,” Which would show that certain members if not the union are concerned as to the specifics of the program and to what extent it breaches privacy of US citizens.
    3. Redacted means to censor a part of text for security and/or legal reasons.
    4. FISA is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 which sets "procedures for requesting judicial authorization for electronic surveillance and physical search of person engaged in espionage or international terrorism against the United States on behalf of a foreign power."
    5. Edward J. Snowden leaked information of the bulk phone and email collection included in the Stellarwind program. While this was illegal in the sense of the law he did so for a very good reason. To expose the illegal activities being performed by the program and allowing the public to be able to decide for themselves what should be done. He is not a criminal, He is brave and selfless.
    6. The government should monitor everyday phone users, but not to the extent of being able to read each individual text, email, etc. They should only be on the look out for malicious messages and calls. So yes, they should monitor citizens' daily activities, but ONLY to an extent.

If they only looked at those who look suspicious, they would most-likely be stereotyping and possibly looking at the wrong people. If someone does not have anything to hide, then they have nothing to worry about. Friends should not be able to monitor another friends' phone activities unless given permission. 6. I do not think that the government should listen in on our emails, phone calls, texts, etc. I believe that unless you are a suspect for any crime that would apply the government to listen in on your phone calls, emails, etc. then they should not have this right. Then again, if you aren't a suspect to anything, why should you worry? If you weren't doing or saying anything wrong then you should not worry what the government is doing as long as they are protecting you. If they are going to continue to monitor these things then I do think they should have a system to look for specific words that may be considered "target words" such as "bomb", "hijacking planes", etc.

I also do not believe in my friends or families activities being monitored unless given just cause. In taking away our privacy for no reason it voids out constitutional rights and slowly takes away the goals our nation was built upon which could slowly lead to our freedom being forfeited as well.

    1) The Stellarwind Program is a set of warrantless surveillance and data collection activities. It is a operation that George W. Bush secretly authorized after the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. This program can see what Americans are doing through watching what is in their emails and their phone records.
    2) American Civil Liberties Union filed lawsuits, Freedom of Information Act, of redacted version memo that was released in 2011.
    3) Redacted- censor or obscure for legal or security purposes.
    4) FISA- Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
    5) Edward Snowman is a former N.S.A. contractor. He leaked existence of the bulk phone and email data programs. In my opinion no he is not a criminal.
    6) No, because things that people do on their phones and computers are strictly for them. The only time they should track emails or phone calls is when there has been a murder or they absolutely know there is a terrorist that is threatening US.

    1. Stellarwind is a surveillance and data collection program that was created by the federal government, spearheaded by President George W. Bush, after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
    2. The ACLU filed a lawsuit against the federal government, requesting the use of the memo on the grounds of the Freedom of Information Act.
    3. To redact something means to combine multiple-sourced texts into a single document/to edit so as to obscure sensitive information.
    4. FISA is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
    5. Edward Snowden is a former National Security Agency contractor. He leaked phone and email data information that had been gathered by Stellarwind. In the most basic sense of the word, yes, because he did leak government information that was classified at the time. However, he did what he thought was just for the good of the people in keeping us informed of this breach of privacy, which I feel is our duty.
    6. I think that the government has the right to monitor our activities within reason. Obviously it isn't possible for the government to know whether or not each and every person is dangerous, whether for themselves or anyone else, so it would be understandable if they decided to monitor all of our activities for safety purposes. However, when the information is misused or misconstrued for the purpose of blackmail, incrimination, or any other unscrupulous task, I feel that their right to this information has been given up.

5.) A member of the Stellarwind program. He leaked information on how Stellarwind used people's internet data as surveillance.
6.) In regards to national security, yes, the government has the right. My friends don't have the right to but they can, if one posses integrity or, if you're responsible enough to accept your actions if they've been found out then, it shouldn't matter. Yes, my parent's have the right too. The same principle mentioned in the last remark applies equally as well here.

    5. Mr. Snowden leaked to the country the details about the wiretapping and the email tapping. No, i do not think he is a criminal because the country had a right to know what was going on and that the government was scanning their emails and phone calls.
    6. I think that the government does have the right to do so because there is not only terrorist threats out there but also assissination threats and the government needs to know about all of them in order to keep us safe and the President. If you have nothing to hide then it shouldnt matter. I personally dont care if they see my personal info because they probably dont care about my life anyway just that i am not going to do something that could harm anyone seriously.

This will help the safety of our country as a whole so they can be constantly protecting us. They do not want to monitor our calls to try to intrude on our lives.

    5. Edward Snowden. a former S.N.A. contractor leaks the bulk phone and email metadata programs out in 2013.

    6. I believe that the government have the right to monitor my phone calls, emails, texts if they have a good explanation to because monitoring phone calls, emails, texts, etc can prevent or least have an idea of any terrorism that might happen. I also believe that those who feel that the government does not have the right to monitor their phone calls, emails, texts, etc might be hiding something that cannot be public to the world. They don't think that preventing terrorism is as important as their phone calls being monitored.

I don't think he is a criminal because he was only doing that so people know all the information about it.
    6. I strongly believe that the government should NOT be able to monitor any ones phones unless they have a good reason. My phone is paid for by my parents, therefore it is my possession, and the government should have no right to monitor it. People deserve their own privacy.

    6. I have been told that when txting "kill", "dead" or "terrorist " will have the government spying on your txt messages.  You may just be joking around with a friend or a family member or it may even be something very private.  And even if it was a  terrorist; I think they would have codes to explain their message. They are way much smarter than that. I don't think it's a good idea for them controlling or having a right to look through our business. But then again I can understand why they are doing it to prevent anything from happening to our country

I have nothing to hide from anybody especially the government track my phone if you want all you will get out of it is selfies and text messages between friends. I do not believe my friends phones should be monitored either because they're phones would consist of the same thing as mines. My parents phones shouldn't be tracked either because they're phones are strictly for business purposes.
