After working with run-on and fragment sentences, we read through several pieces of writing by founding father Benjamin Franklin in class today.  Our main point was the try and determine whether or not a reader can always believe everything someone writes about themselves in an autobiography and whether or not we can believe the legends we have heard about our country's history.  The goal was to become informed readers that evaluate each piece of literature individually without outside bias or presupposition.

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players..."  This quote had a literal manifestation in today's class as students performed a "translated" version of Romeo and Juliet's balcony scene.  After the performance, we continued discussing Act II, looking for ways that Shakespeare indirectly characterizes Romeo, thereby giving us his personal opinion on the idea of love at first sight.

Pre-AP English 9
We started out the class today by writing a journal that chronicled our personal experiences with prejudice and racism.  It was both heart-breaking and harrowing to hear some of the experiences that the students have had and to know that such blatant ignorance and hatred still abound in our society.  Hopefully, our reading this semester will help to curb that type of thinking in this generation of students.

After the journal, students divided into groups and "translated" Act II, scene 2 of Romeo and Juliet, which they will perform on Monday.

Homework:  Students need to finish reading Act II of Romeo and Juliet by Monday.

English 10
