In class today, students continued their comparative analysis of Romeo and Juliet and Simon Birch.

Homework:  Students need to have their copy of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by Monday, March 11th.

EXTRA CREDIT!!  If students would like to type a five-paragraph essay enumerating the comparisons they have found between Romeo and Juliet and Simon Birch, they can turn it in by Monday, March 4th for up to 30 points of extra credit.

We finished preparing for tomorrow's Romeo and Juliet unit test in class today, before looking at an AP Language and Composition practice test.

Homework:  Study!!  Tomorrow's test will cover Words of the Day, pronoun-antecedent agreement, subject-verb agreement, parts of speech, sentence objects and complements, phrases and verbals, figurative language and Freytag's triangle, the Shakespeare notes, Romeo and Juliet, and Runemarks books 8 and 9.

We discussed subject-verb agreement in class today, and we quickly made our way through Act V of Romeo and Juliet.

Students who were out today need to make sure to get the notes from today's class in preparation for the Romeo and Juliet unit test that will be given Tuesday.

Homework:  Study!  The unit test on Tuesday will cover Words of the Day, Subject-Verb Agreement, Runemarks, and Romeo and Juliet.

Please note:  The test that was supposed to be given on Monday will now be given on Tuesday!

We spent the majority of our time in class today discussing sentence objects and complements.  Parents, your student should be able to explain to you what a predicate adjective or predicate nominative is, and they should be able to explain what directs objects and indirect objects are.

In today's class, we reviewed verbal phrases and then learned about prepositional and appositive phrases.  Then we began reading through Act I of Romeo and Juliet.

Homework:  The test that was going to be administered tomorrow will now be administered on Friday, February 15th.  See yesterday's post for a study guide as to what will be on the test.

English 10
After reviewing verbal phrases, we then discussed prepositional phrases and appositive phrases. Then, we practiced identifying several of these phrases in the context of some of the folklore that we have read in class.  Afterwards, we completed our background knowledge of The Crucible and began making our way through Act I of the play.

Homework: The test on The Crucible will be given on Friday, February 15th. The test will cover Words of the Day, grammatical phrases, and the entirety of the play The Crucible.

AHSGE Reading Review
In today's class, we began reading through several pieces from the Naturalism, Regionalism, and Realism sub-genres of American literature.  We will continue these stories tomorrow.  There will be a test on these pieces and these genres on Friday.

Today, we continued discussing Shakespeare, Shakespearean England, and the origin of the English language.  Students need to make sure to PRINT the PowerPoint notes that we have been using so that they will be able to study through all of the information contained therein.  The link for the PowerPoint can be found on yesterday's blog post.

Homework:  Students need to read books 6-7 of Runemarks and the first act of Romeo and Juliet by Thursday, February 14th, when their first Romeo and Juliet test will be given.

The Act I test will cover Words of the Day, phrases (verbals, appositives, and prepositional), The Shakespeare notes (all of them), the first act of the play, and Runemarks books 6-7.
English 10
Today, the class studied semi-colons and worked some practice with the colons and semi-colons that we have been working with for the past two days.  Then, we began our study of The Crucible, learning background information about Arthur Miller.

After working with run-on sentences, we finished our Shakespeare notes in class today; however, because of time constraints, students need to PRINT OUT THESE NOTES so that they will have access to all of the information contained in the presentation.

Homework:  Students need to finish reading books 6-7 of Runemarks by Wednesday, February 13th.  Students also need to read Act I of Romeo and Juliet by the 13th.  (We will be reading part of this in class tomorrow, but we will not be able to finish, so students need to make sure to finish it up.)


EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: Students who would like up to thirty points of extra credit may memorize the first twelve lines of The Canterbury Tales prologue in middle English and recite it to me (from memory) on Friday, February 15th.

Today, we discussed intra-sentence punctuation, including semi-colons and colons.  Afterwards, we continued discussing the Salem Witch Trials and began reading The Crucible.

Friday, February 8th

Due to my attending a scholars bowl tournament, all classes watched the documentary Waiting for Superman today and answer comprehension and synthesis questions regarding the movie and its subject matter, the state of education in America.

Pre- AP 9 will have its next test on either Wednesday the 13th or Thursday the 14th.

English 10 will have its next test on Friday the 15th.

AHSGE Reading Review will have its next test on Tuesday the 12th.

Students took the second part of The Odyssey unit test today.  They also received their Odyssey Parts 2 and 3 tests back today.

Homework:  Students need to read books 6-7 in Runemarks by February 12th.  They also need to have their copies of Romeo and Juliet by tomorrow, when they will receive their first reading assignment out of the play.

We continued discussing commas in today's class.  Afterwards, we read through "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."  Finally, we discussed propaganda.

The American Gothic dominated our discussion today.  We read through Poe's "The Raven" and discussed how it is perfectly indicative of the American Gothic's unique characteristics.

In today's class we discussed the fourth part of The Odyssey and the imagery and symbolism it contains.
