AP Language and Composition Current Events Blog for Week of February 9

For last week's assignment, many of you posted articles about cloning or "test tube babies."  Read the following article about this being used for a penguin birth at Sea World:

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/first-test-tube-penguin-says-hello-to-the-world-142643902.html

Answer the following questions related to the article:

1. What is the technical name for the "test-tube penguin"?
2. Who is Justine O'Brien?  What does she say is the goal of the research center?
3. How well is the test-tube penguin fitting in with the naturally-born penguins?
4. What type of penguin is it?
5. Cloning and artificial insemination is one of the major results that Rebecca Skloot claims come from the use of Henrietta Lacks' cells.  List out at least three advantages and disadvantages of this type of science.
6. What are your thoughts about cloning and artificial insemination?

    1. The technical name is Penguin 184.
    2. Justine O'Brien is Sea World's reproductive center Scientific Director. The goal of the center is to study a species' reproductive biology and monitor the health of many wild life species.
    3. The test tube penguin is fitting in well with the other naturally born penguins. They have said that you can not tell that she's is from a test tube.
    4. This is a Magellanic penguin.
    5. Three disadvantages to clones are that the products are not genetically diverse, they have they exact same DNA as the "parent" cell, therefore one thing can kill one of the cells or one thing can kill all of the cells, and with cloning you have to make sure the process goes perfectly in order to successfully produce a clone. Three advantages are it is a quick way to repopulate, further advancement in cloning can produce an organ that one might need, and you are able to produce with just one person/cell which makes the process quicker and does not need a "mate" as a posed to sexual reproduction.
    6. I think cloning is a great source of technology that can be used to repopulate a species or repopulate cells that can eventually lead to finding cures for harmful diseases, but I do not thing cloning should be used on humans. There is so many risk that come along with the process and if the clone does make it through but not all of the DNA is accurate or something goes wrong the clone could suffer greatly. I believe it is too big of a risk to clone humans.

    3. it is reportedly doing well

    4. Magellanic

    5. It can help cure diseases. It helps bring new knowledge to discover new ideas, It can work just as a good as a testing subject because it is not an actual natural being. Disadvantages Eventually humans could become artificial. You could abuse this to let other people take credit for your cells/DNA. Would you treat artificial beings like natural beings?

    6. I'm not much of a fan of it. Eventually humans could become artificially intelligent to have too much knowledge that it could become dangerous. Or Giving artificial physical attributes to humans that weren't meant to be on humans. I just feel also that feelings of natural humans to artificial beings could be very dangerous.

    2. Justine O'Brien is the reproductive center scientific director at Sea World.
    3. O'Brien says she mixes just fine with her naturally-born adult companions.
    4. The penguin is a Magellanic Penguin.
    5. Three advantages of artificial insemination is that it does not require physical contact, it does not require favorable conditions, and it is less risk of STDs. Three disadvantages are that there is no father figure, genetic disorders can occur, and genetic variation may also falter.
    6. I think artificial insemination leads us away from the natural circle of life. Life itself will literally become artificial if this is what the world turns to for the continuation of generations.

    3. She is blending in well and has now transitioned to eating fish.
    4. Magellanic penguin
    5. pros: It can reproduce depleting populations. It can create organs needed to replace damaged ones. It can be used to reproduce good organisms in agriculture. Cons: It can decrease genetic diversity. It could create a "superior generation". Some may find it morally wrong.
    6. I think cloning and artificial insemination is a positive development in the medical world. It can help endangered species and also be used to produce plants that are needed in our society. Also, organs could be created to replace damaged ones sick as a kidney or heart.

    5. Advantages : 1, we can see if cloning can actually help stop cancer
2, If they have the same cells, they cant be infected
3, cloning can help their children
Disadvantages: 1, if someone got sick we wouldn't know how to trace it
2, we wouldn't know which cells were good or bad
3, we could not tell them apart
    6. I think we could come up with a better solution just because I think that the bad outweighs the good when it comes to cloning.

    1. The technical name for the penguin is "184".
    2. Dr. Justine O’Brien is Sea World’s reproductive center Scientific Director. She says the goal is "to study a species’ reproductive biology, to learn as much as we can about that and use this to not only monitor the health of not only our zoological populations but wild populations as well".
    3. She is fitting in perfectly. Shes mingling with the other naturally born penguins and transitioned perfectly from being hand fed to catching her own fish.
    4. The penguin is a female Magellanic penguin.
    5. The advantage of this type of science is a potential treatment to cure diseases like cancer and Alzheimers, it'll help couples who are infertile, and it helps preserve animals on the edge of extinction. The disadvantage would be uncertainty if the clone will make it and function properly, doctors might use and abuse the method, and they might be prone to diseases.
    6. I think that its okay, i dont know if its against my religion, but if its in order to prolong the life of animals for my future generations to enjoy or to give two infertile people a child then it'll be a crime not to let them clone if happiness is the ultimate result.

Justine O'Brian is Sea World's reproductive center Scientific Director. O'Brian states that
Sea World's goal is to study the species reproductive biology and to help better monitor the species health in captivity and in the wild.
This test-tube penguin is fitting in perfectly with all the other penguins.
    184 is a Magellanic penguin.
Advantages include couples with one person being infertile having the ability to have children, the ability to help raise the populations of endangered species, and the ability to grow organs for human transplant to cure kidney disease or other diseases. Disadvantages include lack of genetic diversity from clones, ethical issues with the fact that it is a human fetus these transplant organs come from, and the debate over whether or not extinct animals should be brought back to life.
I think artificial insemination can be really helpful for a woman whose husband is sterile to have a child without violating the trust of her husband, yet still being able to have a family. Cloning can also be a great thing to grow organs for people with diseases or to bring back animals that went extinct because people weren't caring at the time, but cloning can also be a terrible thing when people begin cloning themselves then we lose genetic diversity.

    1. What is the technical name for the "test-tube penguin"? 184.
    2. Who is Justine O'Brien? What does she say is the goal of the research center? She is reproductive center scientific director at SeaWorld. Their goal is to study a species, to find out as much information about that species as they can. They monitor the health of not only that species in zoological enviroments, but wildlife enviroments as well.
    3. How well is the test-tube penguin fitting in with the naturally-born penguins? Shes fitting in quite nicely, mingling with all the other penguins.
    4. What type of penguin is it? Magellanic Penguin.
    5. Cloning and artificial insemination is one of the major results that Rebecca Skloot claims come from the use of Henrietta Lacks' cells. List out at least three advantages and disadvantages of this type of science.
Advantages: The cells can be stored for long periods of time, they can be easily manipulated, and growth of the cells can be easily monitored and reproduced.
Disadvantages: Cells can be contaminated if all precautions are not taken, the risk of multiple pregnancies, and the chance that the insemination will work.
    6. What are your thoughts about cloning and artificial insemination? I think its pretty nifty. Like you can man-make babies with all the right stuff. Although when people misuse this science, it bothers me, like those people who have eight babies at once??? Thats kinda ridiculous. But still, its like grow your own baby and its really neat.

    2. He is the Sea World's reproductive scientific director. The goal is to study a species reproductive biology.
    3. She is fitting in just as any other penguin would.
    4. Magellanic Penguin
    5. Advantages-1.Can increase wild life stock. 2.Helps researchers learn. 3.Can also help health professions.
Disadvantages-1.Strange mutations could appear. 2.We could make creators harmful to people. 3.We could make animals suffer.
    6. I believe cloning and artificial insemination is a great advancement in science. Not only can it help us learn sufficient things about creatures but it can increase dying populations of animals. Although i do believe we should only use it for research purposes and never to harm any creatures or never try to make another human being.

    3. She is mingling well with the other penguins and is eating on her own.4
    4. A Magellanic penguin
5.Adv:You can repopulate the world with extinct animals, you can create genetically identical animals to use for organ transplants, and in artificial insemination the mother is still a virgin and hasn't been bred.
Dis: inheritance of genetic diseases from the original person, it will affect the diversity in animals, and in an ethical mindset, It is like adding a new definition to making human life.
    6. I think cloning is worse than it is better but only in animal cloning. If the cloning is reproductive, then I feel you don't need to try to make human life. But therapeutic cloning is good because the advantages are good for making different organs and using them in other people for health reasons.

    3. According to the article, 184 is fitting in as one with the "normal" penguins.
    4. Magellanic penguin.
    5. Artificial insemination can help to bypass some genetic diseases. It can also help to restore extremely depleted populations of certain animals. Third, it can help creat overall healthy, bigger... better tasting.. specimens.
On the other hand, it could lead to confusion on issues such as who are the actual parents. Also, we may not know everything that we are messing with and may completely screw up s population. Lastly, who's to say this bigger, healthier, smarter specimen is human and becomes a "superior race."
    6. Personally I believe that there is a VERY fine line between when cloning is helpful and when it is too far.
To me if an animal is grown to carry a fresh organ for someone who needs it then im all for to save human life. On the other hand, I believe that cloning humans for the same reason violates human rights as they are still human.

    5. Advantages: Allows you to have extra animals with desirable characteristics. • Endangered species could be repopulated. • If you need to repopulate an area cloning can reproduce faster.

Disadvantages: They tend to get sick and it decreases genetic diversity. • Risk of infection in vagina or uterus if person is forceful or doesn't really know what they're doing. • It could be a failed attepmt of not done properly.

    4. She's a Magellanic penguin.
    5. Three advantages would be to make new things , to improve situations, and to make life easier and better possibilities. Three disadvantages are : things could go wrong, something might happen and they might not have a normal life, and they may get things mixed up and it may go terribly wrong.
    6. Cloning isn't the real thing, sometimes things might go completely opposite of what people think might go great, and then they might have to take head to different situations. Artificial insemination is weird, honestly, like the child will never know their father and with animals they may be missing some hormones to produce or to be fertile. But if it saves species then it is what it is.

They would go out of their ways to get the cells to perform their projects. If they have all the time for cloning and artificial insemination, then they should be using that time they have to study and find new ways of doing so because cloning and artificial insemination is not the solutions. 5. Advantages to cloning and artificial insemination include being able to restore an endangered species, making children for those who are unable to, and being able to pick and choose what characteristics you want in a specific breed. Some disadvantages are meddling with species' evolution and natural selection, possibly making species' to reliant on it, there is only a limited variety of genes to clone with.
    6. I believe artificial insemination can be both good and bad. It is good in the sense we're able to let those who desperately want children, but are not capable of easily reproducing, actually have children. I also believe it is bad because it's testing its luck with nature. I feel like it should not be used in an abundance because we could all become too reliant. If it is drastically needed, then that is when artificial insemination should come into play. But if it is not needed, then there is not a reason to do it since it is costly and a tedious procedure to complete.

In animals I can see the importance, because we do have species in endanger of going existent but with people who just can't have kids I personally find it unnecessary since the world is already very overpopulated and there are so many children in foster care and orphanages that need homes. I have not been in a situation like that so I do not know, I'm sure it is important to some people to have kids with their own genetics and if there willing to pay for it then its their right.

    5. Cloning has many advantages that include: cloning can make new organs that can be given to patients who need them but can not wait for a transplant, help reduce mutations in a gene pool by cloning an organism without mutations, and help in the study of organisms by providing test subjects. Some disadvantages include: there is a very small success rate, clones often do not live as long as their natural counterparts, and many people oppose cloning because of ethical issues.
    6. I personally disagree with the idea of cloning, especially reproductive cloning which is when a whole organism is cloned. I just think scientists are messing with something they do not fully understand with this. I just do not know what the state of the clone's soul would be. I have never really thought about the ethics of artificial insemination, and I have never disagreed with it. Now that I think about it, I am not sure how it stands biblically so I do not know.

    6) While i see that it can become a great help to other people and I'm not opposed to it or really siding with it. The thought of Humans playing God or whatever and creating things against their natural way of being made creeps me out a bit.

    2. She is Sea World’s reproductive center Scientific Director. She says The goal of our research center is to study a species’ reproductive biology, to learn as much as we can about that and use this to not only monitor the health of not only our zoological populations but wild populations as well
    3. Twelve weeks after her birth, she is mingling with the natural-born penguin population and has transitioned from being hand-fed by a team of biologists to eating fish on her own.
    4. Magellanic penguin
    5. The advantages of cloning are to help rebuild certain species coming close to extinction. In Henrietta Lacks her immortal cells are able to be cloned to help with cancer fighting tactics as well as vaccinations that are given regularly to prevent early death. Disadvantages could be genetic mutation, people could be harmed in the process, also if something were to go wrong in the process you never know what might happen.
    6. I think that if it’s for a good cause then do it. I am all for it as long it isn’t for creating a new species just to see what It can do. It is a great way to help prevent diseases and it is even better when you are helping to repopulate a species of animals that are at risk of extinction like the Magellanic Penguin.

    3) Extremely well, the article says she has been mingling with the natural-born penguins and eating fish on her own.
    4) She is a Magellanic penguin.
    5) Advantages: ~Help study species that are going extinct by artificially making more.
~Gives us the ability to create the exact species needed.
Disadvantages: ~This process is difficult which leaves a lot of room for doctors to make mistakes (I didn't know if I was supposed to do 3 of each or 3 total so I just did 3 of each)
    6) I think that artificial insemination is very useful and effective. It helps us study species going extinct, it gives us the opportunity to reproduce things when they can not reproduce on their own, and it has many other great aspects to it.

    2. O'Brien is SeaWorld's reproductive scientific director. She says the purpose is to study the reproduction biology of species.
    3. The test tube penguin is fitting in well with the naturally born penguins.
    4. The test tube penguin is a Magellanic.
    5. An advantage is that it can help learn more about different species or living things. Disadvantages could be that it could causes deformations or be dangerous. It could also cause raise questions.
    6. I don't think cloning is good to do because I find it creepy to have an exact copy of a living thing. Artificial insemination can sometimes help people though.

    5. 3 Advantages: able to choose what the result will be, increased chance of offspring, provides another way for people to have kids
3 Disadvantages: expensive, post-procedure infections. risk of multiple pregnancies
    6. I do not believe cloning is right. Everyone is unique and copies should not be made. I believe that the utilization of artificial insemination is okay for the purpose of helping a couple have children. I know in many couples have to resort to this as a result of infertility. I also think that if a homosexual couple wanted to have kids, this should be an option for them too (with a donor).

4.) Magellanic Penguin, or test-tube penguin.
    5.)
    Advantages:
    -Healing genetic disorders
-No need for women to be pregnant if they choose to not be.
    -No limits to scientific research
    Disadvantages:
    -Morally unobtainable in humans
    -Create gap in political views
-Increased death of people due to "clones" dying.
6.) I think therapeutic cloning is okay to heal genetic diseases but, I do nor however agree with test tube development and artificial insemination.

    2. She is the scientific director of Sea World's reproductive center. She says the goal of the center is to understand species' reproduction, but also maintain their health.
    3. She is doing well with the other penguins. They said that she is doing very well with interacting with the other penguins. She is also eating fish on her own now.
    4. She is a Magellanic penguin.
    5. Advantages: The genes would be the same so the characteristics would be how you want them to be, can help slow breeders to reproduce faster, and it can help in saving red list species.
Disadvantages: Diseases in the genes and the clone could get the diseases, it will ultimately lead to possible future possibilities due to less variation, and the cost is very high to clone.
    6. I believe that if it is going to lead to something good then by all means do it. If it will help endangered species and help more animals live different, better lives then it sounds like a wonderful idea. However, if it is going to hurt rather than help then I think it would not be the best idea. If by doing this it is at risk of putting an animal in harm then it is a risk that should not be taken in my opinion.

    4. She is a Magellanic Penguin.
    5. Three advantages are if penguins became endangered then they could use it to produce more penguins quicker, it can increase populations, and produce healthy and happy penguins. Three disadvantages are that people may disagree with fact that cloning might be possible, that the penguin might have some kind of deformity or health issues as it grows up, o is could be mentally unstable.
    6. I think it could be a great thing for endangered species and increasing populations, but i do not think that it should be used on humans in anyway. Cloning could bring out deformities and mutations in later generations if the cloned animal was to reproduce.

Disadvantages are if you clone something it would look the same but not act the same, it would freak people out, and it could have some type of genetic mutation.
    6. Cloning would be good to make organs and tissues for people so I think it would be a good thing, and artificial insemination is good because if a woman can't get pregnant it could help her have a baby.
