Pre-AP English 9 Current Events Blog for Week of February 9

Read the following article:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/globalwarming/11395516/The-fiddling-with-temperature-data-is-the-biggest-science-scandal-ever.html

Answer the following questions based on the article:

1. Who is Paul Homewood?
2. What organization did Homewood discover first adjusted temperature readings at the South American Weather stations?
3. Who, until recently, has long been in charge of climate research for the Iceland met office?
4. What is Giss?  What does James Hansen have to do with the organization?
5. If the Arctic ice melt is not caused by rising global temperatures, then what does the author of the article claim does cause it?
6. What is your opinion on global warming?  Is it a hoax, or is it something that threatens our very existence?

    1) Paul Homewood, blogger of Notalotpeopleknowthat, is the person who discovered that published temperature graphs in Paraguay were flawed to show a warming when really it was cooling.
    2) Homewood discovered first adjusted temperature readings at the Global Historical Climate Network.
    3) Traust Jonsson
    4) Giss, Goddard Institute for Space Studies, is one of the original three South American weather stations who made adjustments to data. James Hansen is a scientist that ran Giss for many years.
    5) The Arctic ice melt is caused by warmer water brought in by cyclical shifts in a major Atlantic current.
    6) To be honest, I'm not really sure at this point. Most of my life, I've been told in school that global warming is real and affecting us and will to affect us even more in the future. Now that I'm seeing this article, I'm not so sure. Seeing these discoveries has certainly changed my view on the subject, but I think global warming could still be possible.

    5. The author claims that the government is changing/ adjusting the temperature so that it earth looks warmer than it really is.
    6. I think there is some truth in global warming; however, after reading this article I think the government could be making global warming more extreme, or a bigger deal than it really is.

    2. The organization that Homewood discovered first adjusted temperature readings at the South American Weather stations is the Global Historical Climate Newtork (GHCN).
    3. Traust Jonsson, until recently, has been in charge of climate research for the Iceland met office.
    4. Giss is the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. James Hansen used to run Giss for many years a long time ago.
    5. The author of the article claims that it is where ice is affected by warmer water brought in by cyclical shifts in a major Atlantic current that cause the Artic ice melt.
    6. I think that global warming is something that threatens our very existence. I think that global warming happens because of natural patterns in the Earth’s environment why other people think that the climate change is caused by the people and their attitudes/beliefs and also the media coverage, which I think is BEYOND RIDICULOUS. How can change in climate possibly be caused by people?

    6. Global warming is a hoax, because although the world might be warming, it's not unusual. People have been saying global warming is going to end the world for centuries, which is crazy, because the earths Ozone can heal itself, no matter how much pollution or how much the 'world warms'.

    6) i do think that the earth has definitely suffered from things we do but i don't think that we have caused much change in the temperature of the earth. i think the whole global warming thing is just something to get money.

    5. The author claims that the man that did the research on it, chose ice that was close to warmer water and that would eventually melt anyway.
    6. I think global warming is just a hoax. Because first of all, we have only been keeping track of all these temperatures for the last 50 to 100 years, so we definitely dont have enough data to compare it to. Also, of course there will be some fluctuation with temperature throughout time. So, this is a big hoax in my opinion. Also, Barack Obama recently said that climate change is more of a threat to us right now rather than terrorism. That is a huge lie. The government is just making all this up, because Obama needs to put peoples minds on something else because he dosent know how to handle situations such as terrorism. (sorry for the rant)

    6) I'm not really sure what I believe about global warming, it isn't taught enough for me to comment. From this article I'll say that even if it is real, they shouldn't be exaggerating in like this. No need to lie to people.

6.) I'm not a scientist in any way shape or form, and I really I don't know enough about it to form an opinion with reason and proof behind it. But I will say that I'd take a PROFESSIONAL scientist opinion who works with this stuff on a daily basis over some random persons opinion who really probably may just not want to think global warming is a possibility and doesn't have enough legit information and scientific proof to back it up. I do think that the world is in danger of pollution or something of the sort from the amount of some human uses today that are released into the air. One day we will run out of some things we use on a daily basis and we'll just be out of luck.

  13. Carter Billings 3rd (1 Paul Homewood is a blogger who is investigating the altering of national temperatures. (2 It was the Global Historical Climate Network. (3 Traust Jonsson has until recently been in charge. (4 Giss is a company that focuses of the global climate. James Hansen was the leader of Giss for a few years. (5 He says it is caused by cyclical shifts in a major Atlantic current. (6 Global Warming I believe is a thing because of the massive amounts of carbon that is being put in the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels. I also believe that if limitations are set that we could start to stop the warming before it gets irreversible

    5. Cyclical shifts in a major Atlantic current that causes warm patches in the ocean, eventually causing the ice to melt.
    6. I don't think it's a hoax or something that could be an immediate problem in the near future, but what exactly do humans have to lose by going green? Even if global warming isn't real, being more concerned about our environment would only serve to benefit us. A movement for the environment would have lead to energy independence, the preservation of rainforests, sustainability, green jobs, livable cities, renewables, cleaner water and air and healthier children. The people that think global warming is a hoax are essentially asking the question, "What if it's a big hoax and we created a better environment for nothing?" Why are people so against going green? There's nothing to lose and everything to gain.

VI- It's probably a very real thing. Will it threaten all of the human race's existence? Probably not. By (or if) the time the world is covered in water, we'll have space ships taking us to new places, new technology to save us.
