Well it's official, the word "selfie" is now a real word. The 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary added 150 new words. Many of them come from digital life and social media. Some of these include: spoiler alert, hashtag, selfie and tweep. Some of the other added words are focused on food, such as: pho and turducken, which is a boneless chicken stuffed into a boneless duck stuffed into a boneless turkey. Also, the words fracking, e-waste, and freegan made it into the dictionary as well. A freegan is a person that searches for free food in store and restaurant trash cans. So how are these words chosen for the next edition of the dictionary? Merriam-Webster relies on a network of observers. They track down word the usage in everything. This would be from newspapers, all the way to soup can labels. In the end, three or four senior editors pick the soon-to-be new words.

To keep up with the times, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is revamping their Modern Art wing. They are doing this to stay in the competition with other similar art museums. The goal is to have this done by the year 2020. This will most likely take millions of dollars, because redesigning an entire wing of a museum is no easy task. The museum hopes that this new, improved wing will invoke many more donations of modern art.

Japan has many interesting attractions, from roller coasters, to the world's tallest building and the colossal mountains, but the most unusual would have to be a restaurant. Not any normal restaurant a Moomin Café, this restaurant provides a single customer with a plush stuffed animal to dine with. The Moomin is a character from a Finnish author, Tove Jansson. Resembling a white Hippo these plush characters take turns sitting with the customers who have an empty seat at their tables. The Café serves food inspired by the Moomin's culture, Finnish bread and frothy drinks with images resembling the characters are just some of the items on the menu. This Café has been open since 2003 but it has just recently been getting the long overdue press. So if you just so happen to be in Japan and have time for a bite to eat go to the Moomin Café and have a seat with a plushy pal to pass the time.

Earlier this week, beachgoers noticed something very odd for Florida. At Redington Beach at Florida's Gulf Coast, an elephant was walking through the shore. Many were confused, but it turns out the 58-year-old elephant (also known as Judy) was for Claudia McCorkle's 60th birthday party. At 5, McCorkle turned down the opportunity to ride an elephant and has regretted it ever since. So, after going through City Hall for permission, she paid $4,500 for the elephant to be a guest at her party. Judy the elephant apparently likes water, so she spent 30 minutes playing in the ocean- causing a stir and a few cool selfies.

A Marine Lance corporal, William "Kyle" Carpenter, fell on a grenade for a fellow marine and nearly lost all his jaw and an eye as a result. The marine, Lance Cpl. Nicholas Eufrazio, was only injured because of him. Even though he spent about 2 1/2 in a hospital, he said that he was," very appreciative" and, "put a new perspective" in his life. On Monday, the White House stated that he would be the eighth living veteran of U.S. combat in Afghanistan and Iraq to receive the Medal of Honor. This is very big for him because it is the nations highest military award. Also, William is supposed to get this award on June 19 this year. He never gave up through it all as he said in an interview," "The enemy killed me. I came back, ran a marathon, completed a mud run and jumped from a plane. I won't ever quit. I am just getting started." Since he did this very brave act, it is obvious that he does deserve this award.

-A socialite convicted of first-degree murder in the 1996 Tuscon car bombing killing her husband, was sentenced life in prison on Thursday without parole. Pamela Phillips, 56, insisted she was innocent over and over in court, exclaiming "This is a nightmare," to the gallery behind her. Prosecuters claimed Phillips hired her ex-boyfriend to kill her husband to collect a $2 million dollar life insurance policy and live a life of luxury. Phillips was not given the death sentence on the standards that she is native from Austria, and the US has a treaty with Austria saying no one of Austrian descent is to be executed under capital punishment. Phillips and her conspirator are now both sentenced to life in prison for their crimes.

Many veterans are having to wait a long time to get medical care at the VA Hospital. Some people have been put on a waiting list for treatment and passed away waiting on it. President Obama says he is very upset about it, but has not done anything about it for the six years he's been president. There are many wounded veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq waiting on medical treatment. Director is supposed to be doing an investigation, but no bod has been fired/nothing has been done. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers are equally upset about it, and they want something to be done about it.

Since Curtis Harmon III was very young his dream was to become a professional football player. He was born with a birth defect that stopped the growth from his elbow down. So, most of his life he was picked on by other kids. He didn't let this stop him though. He was very successful in football during his middle school and high school days. He ran for more than 800 yards while playing defense as a middle linebacker. Soon enough the NFL draft came and went, and Harmon went undrafted. A few days later his agent called with a new opportunity. He said that, "he will travel to an open tryout in Mooresville to compete for one of the 46 roster spots on the Montreal Alouettes. The running backs coach for the Alouettes was born without any hands so if Harmon makes it he says that it could be a life learning experience with this guy, who is going through the same thing he his, as being his coach. He knows that the competition will be tough but he says, "I'm trying to get a spot for how I play, not how I look."

  18. What were you doing September 11, 2011? The 9/11 museum in New York was opened this week to recount the events that took place before and after the time of the plane crashing into the building. The museum itself is built on the bedrock of the fallen towers with different statements and videos lining the walls. Objects that survived the destruction is also displayed throughout the museum. Its an emotional impact to walk through the museum, but, it tells the stories of the people that survived 9/11 and how it left an impact on our lives today.

In Ukraine, there were 16 people killed in Donetsk, and 32 others injured. Thirteen of the people killed were Ukrainian soliders. Their first attack was a car filled with grenades that ignited, and the second attack was a group of cars in Rubizhne, and the terrorist blocked the bridge and used people as human shields as they fired. As of right now, there is no independent confirmation of the claims from separate forces.

In Sudan, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim is sentenced to death for staying firm in her Christian faith. The government thought she was Muslim since her father was, she married a non-Muslim, so the government saw it as void. Apparently Al-Deen says hat Meriam's brother turned her in and filed the complaint against her to the government. She is also convicted of adultery, but none of the verdicts are final yet. The world has responded by saying that even the fact that someone even thinks of killing someone for their religion is terrible and should have never even been thought of. Sadly, Adolf Hitler already did that.

Is cheer leading a sport? A lot of people ask this question. In this article it explains how cheer leading should be a sport. Cheer leading meets all the requirements of any other sport. It has competition, rules, physical activity..etc. Cheer is the most dangerous sport for women in the U.S. and requires top-knotch athletes to execute this sport. Based off this article, cheer is a sport because it meets all the requirements for a sport. People who disagree are either death, dumb, mute or ignorant because it really gets under your skin when you're a competitive cheer leader like me and people look down on you.

Other states such as Wyoming have asked if they could bring the firing squad, or hanging back. These are all still being debated and might be used as an alternative for the lethal injections.
