Being from Hillcrest, I have always grown up with Cousins and friend from Hale County. We have squabbled over football teams, cheerleading squads, Homecoming festivities and even Softball. But over the weekend, my cousin and friends played their hearts out to bring home the first every 2A State Championship for Softball. Savannah Holmes pitched a no hitter to lead to this win. They bunted, slid, ran, caught, never giving up on the dream of winning this title. Holmes, Perry, Harbin (my cousin), Jacobs are just a few of the fine players that battled the heat to make this happen. They knew going into Saturday Morning's game that they needed two wins..... this never stopped them. When they arrived back in Moundville Saturday night, the whole town showed up to welcome them with hugs, laughs and even a few tears as they chanted "we can't be stopped" bringing and end to a weekend filled with joy and heartache as the Seniors played their final game with this team and under Coach Lori White. Fireworks were definatly called for in this situation....

California Chrome barely beat Ride On Curlin and Social Inclusion by 1 and 1/2 strides this Saturday in the Preakness, the 2nd race of the Triple Crown series. He is the 34th horse to do so and his trainer Art Sherman did not believe he could do it due to the competition. The last time a horse won all Triple Crown races was 1978 with Affirmed and he is one of the 10 who has done so. California Chrome's mother only cost $8,000 which prompted many to think the offspring would be a dud. Victor Espinoza, the jockey who rode the horse to victory, has already tasted these victories because in 2002 he rode War Admiral in the first two Triple Crown races and won them. California Chrome started from the back and crept to third; and, as the race began to end, Espinoza moved him up past the others and won the race. The first two horses to surge forward ended up in the "back of the pack." Also, not very many horses entered the Preakness or the Derby before, so Tom Chuckas, Maryland Jockey Club president, is thinking of extending the "recovery time," so the horses would not wear out so soon and the owners would be more confident in their entrances.

In Syria's three-year-old conflict, many people have been killed. Losses on the government side were higher than those among the pro-rebel groups. Also, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said all sides played down their losses. Overall, the death toll was around 70,000 to 230,000. Also, efforts to find a political solution to this has failed to be made, therefore, the international mediator will step down at the end of the month. Moreover, Assad is expected to win a third seven-year term, along with his enemies claiming it a deception. Furthermore, more and more people have been kidnapped and go missing each day.

  6. Holograms are the next best thing. Technology never cease to amaze people on what it can do or attempt to do. Can holograms be used to recreate depart artist? On the billboard awards last night the showstopper was none other than Michael Jackson. Well his hologram stole the show, "Slave to the Rhythm" one of the songs off of Xscape ,a album of Jackson's music, before Jackson passed away in 2009. The hologram received a wave of mixed emotions mainly from fans. The Jackson family were okay with the whole idea of bringing Michael back to the stage. Jackie Jackson began to cry while watching the performance. Many have argued that it is wrong to bring stars back to life, even if it is in hologram form. The stars should rest in peace. Others argue that only the music the star made should be used not their being. Some argue what is the star worth if with technology they can be "recreated" and exploited when they are dead. Is a human life even in death exploitable? The Michael Jackson hologram is cool but also weird. The dead should stay dead. With the way technology is moving, holograms of almost any star dead or alive can be "recreated" for the good or for worse only time will tell.

The article I've selected considers whether or not teachers should be taught to understand neurobehavioral patterns in their students. Many believe that neuroscience is the panacea of understanding human behavior, and that if teachers were to be more exposed to psychology that they might better understand their students, therefore becoming more able to configure different methods of learning. Neuroscience is one of the youngest branches of science today, but has yet to truly account for the reasoning behind some of the mannerisms present in most people. That being said a large number of people tend to assume that one size fits all based off of the diagnostic research of a few. The trends neuroscientist encounter tend to be a general rule, not one tailored to specifics.

Chinese computer hackers are hacking into US corporate databases. It has been going on since 2006, and the issue was on the verge of becoming public, but Edward Snowden appeared revealing facts of the NSA and took away the spotlight. Also because of the hacker issue, the relationship between the US and China are not faring well, and they are struggling to come to equal terms. The US finds China as very crucial for economic reasons, which is why they are desperate to keep them as a "significant economic entity."

Federal Communications Commission has took a huge step from the 1960s typical emergency dispatch system. 4 major cellular companies including AT&T and T-Mobile are now adopting the system, which allow the public to text or send in photos or videos in case of an emergency and they are unable to call. They have expected most usage of the text program to come from those who are deaf or in domestic violence situations.

In the Boston Marathon incident, investigation is still going on. Prosecutors have just found out that the bombers used Christmas lights and model car parts to make the bombs. For fuel the two emptied out black powder from fireworks. Dzhokhar Tsarnae is accused of planting the bombs at the finish line of the 2013 race. Tamerlan, was killed during the manhunt that took place after the incident. More than 200 were injured and four dead from these bombings. Prosecutors say that it would be unlikely that the two did not receive training or help one another to develop the bombs.

The nine fires that swept through San Diego County last week exposed a contradiction in California’s preparations for what forecasters say could be a severe fire season. San Diego stands out as easily one of the least prepared [counties] in the entire country. Some blame county taxpayers for refusing to add fees that would boost local firefighting efforts. Others say political leaders have not provided taxpayers with a plan worth supporting. The good news is that everyone is working together and are learning from past fires on how to prevent and extinguish new fires. The Governor is being supportive and will do whatever he can to help the state of California. The extreme drought is not helping the cause and hopefully rain will be fall soon in the state. Planning in advance is the key to stop these fires from continuing to grow.

  21. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported, on Thursday, nearly 10 cases of E.coli infection, which has been linked to raw clover sprouts. The sprouts were reported to have been from the Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC of Idaho. Many humus and other dip products have also been recalled with this recent scare just as a precaution to make sure that these products are safe for human consumption. Sherman Produce has recalled their line of Walnuts in Illinois and Missouri. This was done as a “precautionary measures against possible Listeria monocytogenes”. The USDA has also begun to recall over 1.8 million pounds of beef that “could be contaminated with a strain of E.coli.” The sprouts are a good place to find these bacteria because they have warm, moist conditions that are ideal conditions for these bacteria. Sherman produce is only being recalled because that bacterium was found in the plant; no person has been reportedly harmed by those bacteria due to the walnuts. The past week was a very big deal for the recall of major products as the risk of food borne illnesses is on a rise.

The famous shoe company, Adidas, has taken "selfies" to a new level. Now, they have created an app where a customer can customize their tennis shoes with a picture from their instagram account. This app will launch in August of this year. Suggested picture themes include a cherry blossom tree, a beach scene, and a hamburger. However, if one desires to display their selfies on their shoes, they can. This option will be available on the ZX Flux sneakers, not the athletic shoes. With over 42,000 likes on the Adidas instagram post, these shoes seem to be in popular demand. These shoes will give people the opportunity to show off their instagram photography skills, get some new kicks, and spark up some interesting conversations.

Starting May 8th, Taco Bell began serving the new Spicy Chicken Doritos Locos Taco. It is a healthier, and supposedly tastier version of the signature Taco Bell original. It will feature spicy shredded chicken inside of the classic cool ranch Dorito taco shell. The regular version will retail for 1.59 and the supreme for 1.89 (which includes lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream). The regular version will contain 170 calories (9 grams of fat) per taco and the supreme 200 calories (11 grams of fat) .While taco bell is chickening out on their taco fillings, they're beefing up their social media efforts by sending Snapchat users a Taco Bell movie in several different parts to advertise this new taco. They've also uploaded a series of Taco Bell GIFS to their Tumblr page.

Vergo is not a big collector but he noticed it said Pemberton on it and it looked vintage so he bought it. It was not until he got home that he realized the value of the bottle. The bottle is one of three left in the world and it has a label that is 90% intact which is extremely rare. The bottle will be auctioned off in Dallas on May 24, 2014.

118 people were killed Tuesday in central Nigeria when two explosions set off in the Nigerian city. The explosions went off 20 to 30 minutes apart, setting fire to the entire venue. The 118 people are the ones who have been saved from the explosion, but the city is still searching for people trapped under debri or people that could still be hurt. Mohammed Abdulsalam, coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency in the city said "The figure may rise when the search is over," In the first explosion, people were screaming and running & some were even covered in blood. Some had to be carried away on a stretcher. An ambulance said he saw at least 15 bodies and about 30 injured. The Plateau State Commissioner Chris Olakpe, describes the explosion as terrorist activity. They haven't proved who did this yet. The first explosion was a suicide car bomb, and the second was caused by an improvised explosive device in a separate car. Olakpe said 46 people were killed in the blasts and 45 were injured. This is a tragic event, and they are still investigating.

Last Thursday night the 19th military coup since 1932 was underway in Thailand, and a curfew was set at 10 pm in the capital, Thais. The overthrow was announced by Army General Prayuth Chan-ocha, and the curfew announcement sent citizens rushing home, leaving even the busiest streets deserted. Meanwhile, the soldiers kept a low profile. All stores closed, all local TV stations shut down and most foreign networks were blocked.
The coup administration is called "National Peace and Order Maintaining Council".
The army detained former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and leaders from rival protest groups.
The generals have received condemnetions from Britain and France, and concern for human rights from the UN, while the US Secretary of State John Kerry claimed there's no justification for the coup.
So Thailand is now under great pressure to restore its democracy, but General Prayuth Chan-ocha has proclaimed himself Prime Minister.

  27. Currently there is a major shortage of lethal injection drugs for death row inmates in the US due to a European boycott of drugs used for executions. Tennessee is solving this problem by reintroducing the electric chair. Tennessee is even going even further by being the first state to enact a law that gives death row inmates no choice of their execution. U.S. states and the federal government have updated execution methods several times in efforts to find more humane ways to put condemned criminals to death.

Students sold forged documents and charged up to twenty dollars to make it seem like they were already guaranteed to graduate. Almost four hundred students graduated at Xavier University on the day of graduation, but forty-eight students were not able to walk. The students were punished, and were required to complete twenty-four hours of community service hours in order to graduate, but instead, they turned in forged documents that falsely stated that they had completed community service hours working at Stony Creek golf course.
