Answer the following questions...

1. Do you agree with the mother's statements about her son's suspension?  Explain why or why not.

2. Was the teacher in the wrong for giving this assignment?

3. How far should schools go to ensure students' security?

48 comments:

  1. 1. I don't agree with the mother's opinion because it was part of a project that a teacher told them to do and so a suspension wasn't required.
2.The teacher should have warned them to tell the administrators to tell them who they were when asked so they wouldn't get suspended. Overall not totally the teachers fault.
3.I think schools shouldn't have to go too extreme but I think they should at least have metal detectors but that's just my opinion.-Jordan Chestnut

    1. I can see where you are coming from, but the student should have enough common sense to know to tell who he really is, to avoid punishment. It is not the teachers responsibility to remind them. I do agree with you when you say that it is not the teacher's fault, but schools should be able to do what they need to do, and the kids punishment proves that the school takes safety seriously.

    2. I see where you don't agree with the mother's opinion but I disagree with your answer. The mother opinion was the right one to have. Imagine it was your child who got hurt from some random person showing up at the school. She should be glad the school took the right precaution. I see where you are coming from saying it is not competly the teacher's fault but it is the teachers fault for not warning the official about the assignment. I see where you don't think that schools should go to an extreme but I do think the schools should because the students need to be as safe as possible.

    3. Jordan I see where you are coming from when you don't agree with the mothers opinion, but school shootings happen all the time so I would have been glad to see the school take it as seriously. I'm actually shocked they didn't do anything worse to him other than suspend him. As for everything else you said I agree 100 percent, but for the first thing... Not so much.

    4. If I got suspended for doing a school project I would be very upset, but he should have had enough common sense to answer truthfully to school officials. Also school officials should not be expected to know about every school project and let a strange looking person into the school accordingly. Even if they were aware of there being a project in a drama class they shouldn’t be expected to allow him into the building based on the presumption that he is in that class, especially if he doesn’t even tell them that he’s pretending for a project. I agree that it isn’t the teachers fault but I don’t think that he should have had to tell people to tell the truth to school administrators when questioned. it should be very obvious to anyone that when you don’t think and lie to school administrators resulting in getting the police involved you get suspended. It’s a simple concept that he should have been able to figure out on his own. As far as metal detectors in school, there would be a false alarm every time someone walked through the school doors with a watch, phone, calculator, zipper, metal pen, etc. it’s simply an impractical and expensive idea and that is why no one uses it. Besides you can kill someone with a pencil anyway. The way to stop crimes in school is to question suspicious looking people, like some with bags on his feet and looks like he hasn’t taken a shower in a week, before they go in the school and if someone lies about who they are they get punished accordingly.

  2. I completely agree with the mother’s statement. The school was right to suspend him. He broke a rule, and the school’s actions proved to everyone that they are serious about the safety of their students. It was drama class, so I don’t see anything wrong with this assignment. In drama, you pretend to be someone, and that is exactly what Bodomov did. I think he took it took it far though. He should have revealed his true identity to the school administrators. I think that as long as nobody is hurt, except in life or death situations, schools can take as many precautions as they find necessary to ensure safety.

    1. I understand how you can say that the boy took it too far, but, he had no right to get in trouble. Wasn't he just following orders? Yes, and if I was the mother, I would be very upset with the school. Also, the punishment was a little extreme. Didn't he have a great performance also? I definetly think that he did. He was just doing what he was told and, if anyone should get in trouble, it should be the teacher for giving this assignment and not setting proper rules.

    2. I understand that you agree with the mother because the school did have the right to suspend him because he did not show his identity to the administrator. Except it was a school assignment and what if he would have gotten a bad grade if he broke character. Also we are young, we are suppose to have fun and he did not harm anyone so I do not see the problem in his actions. The administrator was being very judge mental, maybe someone is actually too poor to have nice clothes or someone just likes to dress that way. The administrator could have really hurt someone's feelings and made the feel ashamed about themselves. The security is nice because no one wants to die at a young age. Though it is a little crazy, if someone wanted to hurt someone else at a school they will find a way to do it. There are so many glitches in everyone's school security that it makes you feel unsafe when you really think about.

  3. I agree with the mother's statement because the kid should have just told the teacher who he was. Instead he kept playing the part and got in to trouble. It was not the teacher's fault at all it wuz all the student's. He should have told the administrator who he was. If a school doesn't know who a pesron is they should ask there name, their relation to the child, and the name of the child they are there to see if something doesn't add up, the person or persons should leave the campus immediately.

    1. I understand what you're saying, but the entire point of the project was to not break out of character. I'm not saying that the administrator was wrong to call the cops, but the teacher should've foreseen some problems bubbling up in the assignment.

  4. I agree that with the mothers statement about keeping the schools safe. I think that the teacher was not wrong for giving the assignment becuase I think that it is a given that in that situation you would tell them who you were. I think that its a good thing that schools are trying to protect students more. I am fine with video cameras and all that but I dont think school should feel like a prison after all most kinds already think it is. I think as long as the school does not have overbearing security that could hinderence learning the school should do whatever is neccessary to protect their students.

    1. I disagree, yeah she should be worried about the school safety but it was an assignment given by the teacher and the principal should have been told about it. The mom should have been furious because the suspension is going to be put on her sons record. She should have gone to court.

    2. I do not agree with the fact that the teacher was not wrong. The teacher was wrong for giving the assignment. If she didn't want the kids to do the best they could then she should have never put them in that situation. I think the teacher was wrong and that the school was right about keeping the kids safe since there was previous shootings in the area.

  5. Yes I agree with the mother's statements about her son's suspension because like she said, there have been numerous shootings and stuff so you can't just let random people into your school not knowing who exactly they are or what they want. No the teacher was not wrong for giving this assignment. I guess there could have been other ways to do it but it wasn't a complete bad idea. I think schools should go pretty far to ensure students' security or safety. For example, our school put up that camera and button or whatever it's called outside the front of the school, which is an awesome idea but there are plenty of more entrances around the school that are unlocked all the time so there could be more things that we could've done to ensure the students. But overall it was a pretty good idea.

    1. I disagree because first of all the project was for school, and the boy was just doing what he was assigned to do. The teacher should have warned the other faculty members and administration about the assignment. The suspension he got was not needed, because he did nothing wrong all he did was do what he was assigned to do. For the future references to other teachers that assign such assignments to warn the people in charge and there would have not been such a big deal.

Yet i agree with the fact that the school should protect the students, but the teacher was in the wrong for putting the assignments upon the kids. I think the kid was just doing his role in the classrom and went above and beyond on his job. Over all the school was right but wrong at the same time and the kid was just doing his job. -Carson Williams

I somewhat agree with the mother's statements. If I was her I would be furious with the school since it was an assignment given by the teacher. But I think that the school should not have suspended him when he was just doing what the teacher told him too. I would also be grateful, like she said about how good the schools security is. No the teacher was not in the wrong for giving the assignment. He did not know that the student would choose to be a homeless person and take it as far as he did. Schools should be very cautious at the people who come to the school that look suspicious and they did the right thing with calling the police.

The school did a great job at protecting the kids and teachers inside.

I do not agree with the mother's statement about her son's suspension because it was a school assignment and he should not be punished for doing the assignment too good, but I am glad police came because her son was suspicious and he could have been a threat even though he was not. The teacher was not wrong for giving this assignment because it puts them in someone else's shoes and helping their acting, I hope though that the teacher stood up for her student but I do not know because it does not say in the article. The school should have good security and protect their students, they should go far enough that every student will not be in danger, but they should not suspend someone for being suspicious and doing an assignment right for school.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1.No, because I think after they found out the kid was just acting they should have written him up or just given him a lecture. Suspending a kid from school is not actually protecting the school. Granted, the kid did seem quite smart-alecky about the whole situation.
    2. No, absolutely not. It is a very cool idea, and would offer the students an opportunity to advance in their acting. Also, I highly doubt the teacher ever suspected this assignment would have these repercussions.
    3. I think a school should go as far as they possibly can but keep in mind that not all violence is preventable. For example, despite what people may say, there was absolutely nothing that could have been done to prevent the shooting at Sandy Hook. It was an extremely secure school and had the best and newest technology to ensure the students safety. Some things just happen no matter what we do.

  9. It's great the the mother agreed with the statements about her son's suspension. She knows that they were doing their job. The school has a right to take precautions if they see a suspicious person near the school. They have to do so in order to keep their students protected. It probably wasn't the best idea to give students this particular assignment. If you tell your students to create a character and act like the character all day, there's no telling what type of characters the students may portray. I don't really think they should have suspended the student after they realized who he was, because he was just doing an assignment given to him by a teacher. Schools should do whatever they need to to keep the students safe. There are so many cruel people in the world today, and sadly it has come to the point where many people can't go to school without feeling a little fearful of what may happen. I think schools should do everything in their power to make their students feel as if they are in a safe learning environment.

    2. The teacher was not wrong for giving the assignment, it would have been a fun role playing during school once the teachers began to notice the other students dressed up as characters as well.

    3. Schools should go as far as it takes to ensure the students security by having metal detectors on all the main entrances, security guards with bare arms, and working surveillance cameras on all parts of the school and in the parking lots.

I agree with the mother's statement about her son's suspension, she is very correct about being safe about letting strangers in due to recent shootings and school violence’s, her kid was not planning on being violent, but if that stranger is dangerous there will be a terrible outcome. The teacher is in the wrong for giving the assignment because she should have know kids staying in "character" can lead to danger. Schools should go to extreme measures to ensure kids safety, especially after all these school shootings and violence.

Nikhil, I understand that you think schools should go to the extreme and take all precautions, and whatever it takes to make the school safe but schools can be safe without needing tons of things. The school can get a buzzer system and that be it, there is no need for metal detectors. At least to make it safe against outside shooters.

Nikhil, I understand and agree with your idea that schools need to keep schools safe. However, is what these schools doing actually effective? Suspending a kid for spooking the administration does not really seem like security measure. Also, how extreme are "extreme measures"? Should we have cameras all over the property? Not allow any other adults at all. There are just some things we can not prevent. No measures, no matter how extreme, can completely protect a school and its students. It seems scary, but that is how the rest of the world works, so its really not a big deal.

I disagree with the mother's statements about her son's suspension because why was suspension even a thought in someone's head? Sure the school can take precautions but do not get carried away. Also, The teacher is not in the wrong for giving this assignment because Michael Bodomov could have broken character to be serious to school officials but decided otherwise. The school can go as far as mesh bookbags and tucked in shirts but there is no need for metal detectors and cops.

I disagree with your opinion about the mother’s statement and the schools ‘wrong’ actions. Although I understand why you would choose that opinion because at the end there was nothing serious happening, I disagree with your overall opinion because what if it was something serious? Schools should not take any chances with things like "strangers" entering, the mother's statement is very correct, her son should have known he had gone too into character. If schools take risky choices, such as letting strangers enter, there could be a terrible outcome. Also I disagree with you statement of the school ‘getting carried away’ because schools will rarely get too carried away when it comes to the safety of the students and staff, they must treat everything seriously and not lightly.

no I don't, I believe knowing that a class at the school had a drama assignment that day and it was to dress up as something was okay for what he did. the teacher should have known that he was a student because the assignment was for that day. I think the principle should have told the teachers or something.
No the assignment was good and interesting to the students that's why this guy went all out and really did look homeless.

    1. I disagree because in high school teachers do not know what other teachers assign. The student pulled off the part of a homeless man in a great way, however he should have identified himself as soon and he knew something was wrong for safety reasons. if it had actually been a homeless person and the where dangerous and not a student, everyone would call the teacher a hero instead of disagreeing with his actions The student even made himself more suspicious by not trying to use the main entrance. The whole story would be different if he would have just identified himself.

It could let some student further their acting career if that's what they want to do. Although, they could be in danger from a character they pick if a citizen doesn't agree. Schools should have officers checking the school daily and security camera around the perimeter incase the school is endangered.

  21. I agree with the mother’s statement about her son’s suspension. I would not be very happy if school officials just let some strange person into the school. If he actually were a deranged lunatic I wouldn’t feel very safe with him in school with me. He should have had enough common sense to at least tell school administrator. I don’t believe that the teacher was necessarily wrong to assign it but I would think it was a good idea. Also she should have been clearer for people who weren’t bright enough to figure it out themselves that she didn’t want them to try to trick school official, unless she did in which case I think it was wrong of her to assign. It is a good idea for schools to have at least one police officer at a school in case of a emergency, security cameras in the hallways, and a buzz in system for getting into the school in the afternoon, but I don’t think it is necessary for schools to monitor the websites visited in school, or to have cameras other than the hallways and exterior of the school.

Instead of yelling at the student who was just staying in character, they should be looking for real suspicious persons. In response to the third point, how far can we go before the paranoia sets in? How long would it be before we end up like Marcus and co. In Little Brother?
