3. With whom does Spice work?
4. BRIEFLY summarize the five geoengineering described in the article.
5. Your thoughts... do you believe it's okay for scientists to do these kinds of experiments?  If not, how far can scientists go to "protect" humanity from itself?

  1. 1) Planet hacking is a large scale manipulation of Earth's climate.
2.) SPICE is the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering.
    3.) SPICE works with IPCC.
4.) Stratospheric Aerosols- could be released into the air and could cool the Earth. Could also be very harmful to the patterns scientists can predict.
Space Reflectors- A huge disk could be put in space to deflect some of the suns rays. The drawbacks are it is costly, and asteriods could destroy the glass disks.
Ocean Fertilisation- This would be dropping iron fillings into the ocean to generate the carbon-absorbing plankton blooms. The major drawback would be the death of many sea creatures.
Artificial Trees- Basically making machines that can extract more CO2 from the atmosphere. The drawback is it is very costly.
Afforestation- This method is simply planting more trees, painting roofs white, covering tranches in the desert, and anything else that seems to add to the natural process of ending Global Warming. The drawback is that it wont effect Global Warming enough to change anything.
5.) I do not believe that scientists have the right to "protect" humanity from itself by creating false ecosystems or weather changes. Humanity needs to pick up after itself and stop relying on others to do it for them. If severe climate changes are really that huge of a problem then they should force people to live cleaner or produce healthier products. Controlling weather is wrong and scientists do not know everything there is to know about the weather or its patterns. Also, the fact that this new science could be used in war makes me sick.
6.) I believe that this is an ethical appeal to draw in support for the projects or to draw in support against the project.

Planet hacking is the use of technology to manipulate nature's climate. Spice is a team of climate engineers, that work with the IPPC (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Stratospheric Aerosol is one of the five geoengineering projects in which the sun's heat is reflected back to the sun. Then Space reflectors where a glass shade blocks the sun's light. Next, is ocean fertilization where we happily drop iron filings into the ocean to create carbon sinks and kill stuff. Then we decided natural trees weren't good enough and had to make artificial trees to get more carbon dioxide from the air. Finally, afforestation shows we should go back after ripping down trees and plant more. I believe it is okay for scientists to do small scale but not experiments that could harm us more than help us. I believe the title is more of an appeal that would interest people. Seeing as though us, people like conflict what is not a more perfect title to start the opinions.

  3. Planet hacking is using technology to manipulate the earth's natural tendencies. Spice is a group of British Stratospheric Climate Geoengineers . Spice works with IPCC ( Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ) on environmental campaigns. the stratospheric aerosol project would cause volcanos t erupt in effect causing global climate to decrease, however; it would also release other chemical s that could significantly change other weather patterns. Space reflection isputting a big sunshade in space to reflect some of the sun's rays away from earth. this would help with the heating but it would require maintenance to keep it working and a massive amount of capital. Ocean fertilization is putting iron filings that would create carbon absorbing algae to capture CO2 but the downside is that it could endanger marine life. Artificial trees would take in 1,000 times more carbon than a normal tree. the only downside is the cost of this type of project. Afforestation is painting roofs of a house whit and putting reflective material in deserts to reflect the energy back to the atmosphere. the only thing wrong with this is that it is still engineering the climate and would prove to be inefficient to advert the worst of the climate changes. scientist can not do these types of experiment because they don't know what is going to happen. they should try to deal with the present problems. scientist should let the future be the future because know one can change the future or predict correctly. the experiments should only try to solve problems that can be helped like reduction of fossil fuels in the atmosphere. they need to help push for hybrid cars and trucks. scientist can only go as far as a man can go to fix things. I think we have reached that point. if fossil fuels are still a concern in the world then scientists need t complete one task at a time. when fossil fuels are no longer a issue then move to other major problems that can be solved , if not then try to work with it or around t if possible. scientist can only truly protect humanity when they actually finish a task before moving to a more abstract one. the title of the article is a little of both of propaganda and creates an pathetical and ethical appeal. the propaganda is that 'Let's play God' is forming a bias opinion because scientist are in a sense trying to be god or even high than God. for most Americans, this is wrong creating an ethical appeal. that last part of the title "The scientific experiments that might save the world (or destroy it...) " serves as situational irony because if your God , he would save the world. this also gives the idea that other humans are toying with the lives of million other Americans. this creates an pathetic appeal because people don't want other people over their well-being that could damage their everyday lives. people are prone to make mistakes. the propaganda to this is that is sting the fact that "hey other human are playing God and trying t control something that is out of their hand, but sorry if you have to pay more on your taxes to funds these "projects" or get twice as much rain this year'. the title makes an pathetic and ethical appeal because people do not want people messing with things they can not control in in the long run it turn out for the worst. let God be god and let man stay a man because one can not be the other.

  4. 1. Planet hacking is the large-scale, technological manipulation of the climate.
    2. Spice is Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering team who was going to be the first in the West to take research out of doors.
    3. Spice works to cool the planet by pumping out chemical particles to reflect sunlight.
    4. -A stratospheric aerosol is when heat could be stopped from reaching the Earth's atmosphere by reflecting some of the sun's rays back into space.
-Space reflections is assembling a giant glass sunshade in space then firing it into orbit that could reflect a small proportion of the sun’s rays that could make warming more manageable.
-Ocean fertilisation is dropping iron filings into the ocean that generates blooms of carbon-absorbing plankton.
-Artificial trees would extract 1000 times moreCO2 from the air a day from the atmosphere than a natural tree.
-Afforestation is planting real trees that have the aesthetic advantage of creating forests.
    5. I believe that it is not okay for scientists to do these kinds of experiments because there are more risky negative outcomes than positive outcomes. Scientists should go as far as they need to to help humanity if there are serious threats to humanity involving the weather. As for right now, they should not experiment with the weather by their different experiments.
    6. The articles title means that we can play God by changing the weather using experiments. The article is showing an appeal rather than propaganda because it is not promoting or publicizing a particular political cause or point of view.—Kelsey Skurka

  5. Planet hacking, or "geoengineering," is when the climate is manipulated upon with technology on a large area. Spice is the "Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering" group that worked with Cambridge University to try and inject fine water particles into the air to test if actual chemical particles could reflect the sun's ray and cool down Earth. Scientists believe there are five ways humans could try and "geoengineer" and prevent further global warming: we could use farce volcano eruptions and the sulphate molecules that are released to reflect sun rays back out into space; we could make a "giant glass sunshade" to protect more sunlight from hitting our planet; we could plant "artificial trees", machines created by Klaus Lackner that can pull out 1000 times more carbon dioxide than a normal tree, around the world; or, we could do things like paint our roves white or plant more forests could reflect more unnecessary radiation. All of those methods have their drawbacks and a lower practicality. In my opinion, I do not think scientists should be allowed to tamper with the planet because first of all "climate change" is not real, it is simply the Earth just heating up a little. It is a normal process and everyone needs to stop acting like the world is coming to an end. Second, this is God's Earth, He will do with it what he wants to do with it. Scientists do not have the requirements to "protect us from ourselves" as if we are all little children who do not know what is going on. Yes, fossil fuels are bad and yes clean energy is great. But, what we are doing now is not going to kill Earth and geoengineering does not need to happen. The article's title is "Let's play God: The scientific experiment that might save the world (or destroy it...) which is trying to be ironic because we are humans, not God who is "master of all," and the scientists by conduct geoengineering are trying to be God by altering things out of their range of responsibility. I think it is an ethical appeal towards people who are worried about how humans are treating Earth and are looking for ways to save it.

  6. Planet Hacking is the technological manipulation of the climate. Spice is the Stratospheric Particle injection for Climate Engineering. I think it is a type of propaganda. Many Christians wouldn’t agree with that, because only God can play God. They work with the IPCC. The five types of geo engineering are: sending a sunshade into space to reflect light, the exploding artificial volcanoes, putting the remains of mountains into the ocean ,and filing the ocean to stimulate growth. . I think we need to do something. We are slowly depleting our resources, and we have to do something about it.

  7. 1) Planet hacking is manipulating the climate on a large scale by the use of technology.
    2) The Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering (Spice) is a geoengineering team that nearly sent a Stratospheric Aerosol balloon into the atmosphere but aborted right before lift off.
    3) Spice works with Cambridge University.
    4) Stratospheric Aerosol has potential to be very successful but is very risky. It sends particles into the atmosphere that would cool the Earth; however, Stratospheric Aerosol could have a major impact on the climate. Space reflectors are very expensive and would not be very efficient. They are glass shields that would be shot into space to reflect the sun off the Earth; however, they are expensive and would take a lot of time to create. In addition, they could be easily broken by space rock. Ocean Fertilisation would require the mass dumping of iron into the ocean to have algae and plankton absorb it, then die and sink to the ocean floor. Ocean Fertilisation would be ineffective, inefficient, and could kill large amounts of marine wild life. Artificial Trees are trees that would extract large amounts of Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere, but would be very expensive. Finally, Afforestation is the planting of more trees in the environment. Although it would please many anti-geoengereeing activists, Afforestation would be not be practical nor effective.
    5) There is no problem with scientists conducting experiments like the ones described in the article. The scientists are simply looking to solve global health and climate problems, and they have to take experiments to determine what can heal the Earth and her climate.
    6) The title is propaganda against geoengeneering. God is sacred to most Americans, the primary audience, and anyone trying to imitate him will be frowned upon and criticized. God represents a personal relationship with everyone and the title attempts to appeal to the relationship, thus creating immediate controversy and displeasure. In addition, the title also says "(or destroy it)." Humans fear death more than they love life. By adding this into the title, the reader is already skeptical and is against of the topic at hand.

  8. 1) Planet hacking is another term for geoengineering.
    2) Spice is Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering.
    3) Spice works with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC.
    4) Stratospheric aerosols work by reflecting some of the sun's rays back into space; however, global weather patterns could be affected in doing this. Space reflectors work by assembling a "giant glass sunshade" in space then sending it into orbit to reflect some of the sun's rays, but asteroids would most likely ruin the sunshade, and it would be very expensive. Ocean fertilization works by dropping iron filings into the ocean to generate plankton that take in CO2, but this would have a drastic affect on the marine life and not much of a benefit. Artificial trees work by making machinery that extracts 1,000 times more CO2 a day than a natural tree. Finally, afforestation works by planting real trees and creating forests, but just this method would not affect the worst of climate change.
    5) If any of these methods benefit the Earth in the long run, we should do it. The whole world would never quit making nuclear bombs or ruining the atmosphere to save humanity, so it's up to the scientists to help future generations out.
    6) This is propaganda: it purposefully accuses the scientists of "playing God" to make the reader dislike what the article says before he or she reads it. It is very biased and tries to influence the reader's position before they even read about it.

  9. Planet hacking is the technological, large-scale manipulation of the climate. Also, Spice is the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering team. The Spice team works with the Cambridge group. Stratospheric aerosols is the reflecting of some of the sun's rays back into space. Space reflectors is getting a huge glass sunshade in space, and firing it into orbit could reflect a small proportion of the sun's rays. In addition, ocean fertilization is dropping iron filings into the ocean to cause blooms of carbon-absorbing plankton. Moreover, artificial trees can be used to extract CO2 from the air. Lastly, afforestation is the planting of trees to create forests. I believe that it is okay for scientists to do these kind of experiments because they know what they are doing. If they think that something needs to be done to help our planet, then they should have the right to do so. The title is "Let's Play God." God created the world and scientists are trying to create things to help it. Some may say that they are our "Planet God." This is just because they are also creating for the planet something that could help us.

  10. Plant hacking/ geoengineering is a technological manipulation of the climate. Spice is the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering team. Stratospheric Aerosols- work to stop heat from reaching earth, by reflecting the sun’s rays back into space. Space reflectors- manage global warming assembling a giant glass sunshade in space then firing it into orbit to reflect a small portion of the sun’s rays. Ocean fertilisation- dropping iron filings into the ocean can generate blooms of carbon-absorbing plankton to create “carbon sinks.” Artificial trees- developed machinery that can extract 1,000 times more CO2 a day from the atmosphere than a natural tree and give it a tree look to add CO2 to the air. Afforestation- planting real tress for forestation and Painting the roofs of houses white or covering tranches of desert in reflective material could also bounce back unwanted radiation. I do not think that scientist should be able to do these type of experiments because it would be a lot of money and many things could go wrong. They should just let the earth be natural like it is supposed to be. I don’t think scientist can protect humanity from itself, it should just be how it is and let God’s will be done. This title is saying that scientist are trying to improve God’s creation. If you are a Christian it sounds like negative propaganda in that scientist are trying to make God seem not as powerful and messed up in his creation. Also, I think it is trying to appeal to those who enjoy science or think that the world is going bad.

  11. Planet hacking is climate engineering. People try to control the Earth's climate to prevent global warming. Spice is Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering. Spice is working with the IPCC , a respected global warming group. The geoengineering described in the artical are: stratospheric aerosols, space reflectors, ocean fertilisation, artificial trees, and afforestation. All of these have drawbacks, and most of them are not really practical. I don't think it's okay for scientists to do these kinds of experiments. I think that all they can do is warn us of the danger of global warming, and give us tips on how to be more kind to the earth. I think that the title is an appeal. It gives people the idea that they can do something to prevent things like global warming from happening. Nobody can "play God". Everything that happens is in his hands.

  12. Recently, geoengineers have developed a technique to cooling down the planet manually; this process is known as “planet hacking.” This would be done by spraying hundreds of liters of water into the atmosphere. SPICE, or Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering, is a geoengineering research project in the United Kingdom that aims to inject particles into the atmosphere for the purposes of solar radiation management. SPICE works with the United Kingdom government to try and find solutions for the problems. They also began work with the IPCC, or Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, because they, for the first time, “consider [geoengineering] as a weapon against rising temperatures.” There are five different ways in which have been created to combat the rise in global temperatures. The first is stratospheric aerosols, which is a release of huge amounts of sulphate particles into the atmosphere because it has been proven to lower temperatures. The next is to construct a massive glass disk to reflect the sun’s rays away from the earth. Dropping iron filings into the ocean is another way because it “can generate blooms of carbon-absorbing plankton.” The planting of artificial trees can be used to extract Co2 from the air. Afforestation, or the creating of forests, can also be used to extract CO2, but it is not very practical. The spraying of particles, such as sulphate, into the air is crossing the line a little too much because although it may reduce temperatures, it also affects the weather in a negative way. The use of artificial trees and afforestation, on the other hand, is an excellent idea because it helps to quickly remove Co2, the gas trapping in heat, from the air. The title of the article is developing an ethical appeal because it is saying that if we start to use technology that is changing the climate, or playing “God,” then we have gone too far, since these are big risks and may affect the world negatively in the future. It is appealing to your morals of if playing God is appropriate or the right thing to do.

I remember being in West Virginia and everyday it rained, the rain was very acidic from the burning of fossil fuels. Now I know the addition of these aerosols may reverse the effects of burning fossil fuels on temperature, but, like the burning, it can cause major problems with the global weather, which is enough to not use this method, since it is only covering up one area and making another one worse. The use of artificial trees and afforestation, on the other hand, is an excellent idea because it helps to quickly remove Co2, the gas trapping in heat, from the air. 14. Planet Hacking is the technological manipulation of natural events. Spice is the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering. these people work for the Cambridge college. The first they are spraying water into the air to try to cool down the earth. Second one is sending a sheet of glass into space. Third is putting pieces of mountains into space. Fighter jests dropped iodine particles in the clouds. Spraying sulfate into the atmosphere. I don't think they should be doing this. the best thing they could do is just let God do his thing. But what kind of appeal is this? I don't agree on the fact that you think they shouldn't be doing this though because we as a world probably need it, even though it may danger our world. But i would hope that they find a way that it would danger our world.

  15. Planet Hacking- the conscious effort of manipulating or changing the climate of the planet.
Spice- Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering. I'm pretty sure they put those words in that certain order JUST so that they could spell out "spice."
Spice is in the cahoots with the Cambridge group. Or is it the IPCC? The article isn't very clear, but it is one of the two.
To summarize- stratospheric aerosols= okay; Space reflectors= eh; Ocean fertilization= nope; Artificial trees= best thing so far. Drawback? Money. Duh; Afforestation= oh heeeeeck naw. All of these geoengineering ideas are to be helpful towards the earth and the climate, but, like always, there are some really bad ideas and some really good ideas. The good ideas not being at a high possibility because of little things, such as money. $$$$$$$
If their experiments are harming our earth when they're trying to help it, they need to stop doing those things and find other ways of helping. I understand the money issue though. The government is brainless. The citizens are more concerned with celebrities' baby names than the climate. All of the money that could be put to use helping our planet is being thrown at athletes and celebrities. Lots and lots of money. I believe that's absolutely ridiculous,
"Let's Play God: The scientific experiments that might save the world (or destroy it..)" Why not both? It's presenting an ethical appeal, bringing up God and saving/destroying the world, and by doing so, it creates propaganda. Propaganda is, after all, information presented in such a way to deliberately change the idea(s) of a person/group.

  16. Planet hacking, or geoengineering, is the large scale technological manipulation of the climate of an area. Recently, there has been increasing interest in this scientific pursuit. The Spice ,or Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering, team is a research team focused in geoengineering. The Spice team often works together with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s mst respected authority on the subject of global warming. Five example of geoengineering feats that could be used to combat global warming are stratospheric aerosols, space reflectors, ocean fertilization, artificial trees, and afforestation. The aerosols could stop heat from reaching earth’s atmosphere by reflecting back sun rays, and it would be the fastest solution although it is very risky. A space reflector could reflect small amounts of light away from earth and make global warming much more manageable. Ocean fertilization could lead to algal blooms which can act as a carbon sink, reducing global warming concerns. Artificial trees could be used to take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere which would also alleviate concerns. Afforestation would make carbon sinks naturally with low risk, however, it is not very practical. I think it is okay for scientists to be doing these experiments because if a practical method of reducing global climate change is not found soon, then we could suffer from it later. I once went to see this Disney movie about polar bears and quickly learned that not only is rapid global climate change affecting humans, but it is also negatively affecting most life on earth. The title of the article is an example of an ethical appeal because it drives one to think about the ethics of a science experiment that could have potentially negative consequences or positive consequences.

Planet hacking is artificially changing the weather. Spice is a group of British scientists who have worked on ways to help slow down the effects of global warming. STRATOSPHERIC AEROSOLS are when you try and reflect the suns rays back into space. Space reflections are creating a shield in the space that would block the suns rays. OCEAN FERTILISATION would mean filling the ocean with iron fillings to generate more Co2. Artificial trees would be made to produce Co2. AFFORESTATION includes home growing trees and painting roofs white to reflect the suns rays. Spice works with the IPCC. I think it is right for scientists to take these measures to secure the prosperity of our planet for the future. I think the title is a ethical appeal to people that this is the right thing to do.

Stratospheric Aerosols - Heat can be stopped from reaching Earth by reflecting some of the sun’s rays back into space
Space Reflectors - Assembling a giant glass sunshade in space then firing it into orbit could reflect a small proportion of the sun’s rays.
Ocean Fertilisation - Dropping iron fillings into the ocean can generate blooms of carbon-absorbing plankton
Artificial Trees - Machinery that can extract 1,000 times more CO2 a day than a natural tree.

    5. I am kind of stuck in the middle here. I really think we do need to improve global warming and find out a solution. But on the other hand, I also think we shouldn’t damage the environment if it isn’t absolutely necessary. Maybe a couple test would be find, but scientist aren’t ever okay with just one test. It usually takes quite a few.
    6. I think it is more of an appeal because it is in a way being sarcastic, because no one can “act like God” or create the planet basically.

  19. Planet hacking is geoengineering or the large-scale technological manipulation of climate control. SPICE is the stratospheric particle injection for climate engineering. SPICE works with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control. The first geoengineering described is stratospheric areosoles. This process stops heat from reaching earth’s atmosphere by simulating a volcano eruption. Space Reflectors are giant glass sunshades that are put into outer space and reflect sunlight. Ocean Fertilization is the process of dropping iron fillings into the ocean ultimately creating carbon sinks to reduce carbon. Artificial trees is the process of extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 1000 times greater then that of a tree. Last is afforestation. This is planting trees, painting house roofs white, and putting reflective material in the deserts. I believe that the extremes of the spice balloon are a bit much. If you could possibly destroy the earth trying to save it I do not understand taking that risk. Some things to prevent extreme climate change are not as extreme, which could help for the time being. More research should be done before anything actual, but putting the whole population at risk is unacceptable. The title “Let’s Play God: The Scientific Experiments that might save the world (or destroy it…) is made to create n ethical appeal. Ones ethics come to play in this article. Is risking lives worth saving the environment? An ethical appeal is made.

Planet hacking is using technology to manipulate the climate on a large scale; the process’ official name is geoengineering. A group of engineers from Cambridge were on the verge of being the first in the West to research geoengineering outside; the team called their research Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering (Spice). Spice works with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, which is the world’s most respected organization on global warming.
Stratospheric aerosols could be sent into the stratosphere by balloon, or other method, and release chemicals, like sulphate, in order to reflect the sun’s light and reverse global warming. The drawback of stratospheric aerosols is that they can have drastic effects on global weather patterns. Glass space reflectors could be shot into space and would reflect a small portion of the sun’s rays, making global warming mote manageable. Some drawbacks of the experiment include vulnerability to asteroids and space debris and time required to maintain the reflector. Iron filings could be dropped into the ocean in what is known as ocean fertilization; this would generate plankton that absorb CO2, but it could acidify the water. Artificial trees extract many times more CO2 from the air a day than trees; the only drawback is the high cost of CO2 extraction. Afforestation includes the planting of real trees, painting the roofs of houses white, and covering expanses of desert with reflective material to avert unwanted radiation; however, these methods alone will not avert the worst of climate change.
I think it is okay for scientists to do some of these experiments, like afforestation and a few artificial trees, because they have the lowest risks on the environment and wildlife. The article’s title is an example of an ethical appeal because “Let’s play God” causes the reader to think that it is not the scientists’ place to tamper with geoengineering, even if it is in an attempt to reverse global warming.

Planet hacking is is the large-scale, technological manipulation of the climate. Spice is the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering. Spice works with the IPCC. The first geoengineering project is releasing large amounts of sulphate particles into the atmosphere through artificial volcanic eruptions to prevent heat from reaching Earth's atmosphere. The second geoengineering project is assembling a giant reflective shield in space to reflect some of the sun's rays. The third project is dropping iron fillings into the ocean to generate blooms of carbon-absorbing plankton. The fourth project is to implement artificial trees to extract 1,000 times more CO2 per day. The last project is a more natural approach of planting real trees, painting the roofs of houses white, and covering areas of desert with reflective material. I believe it is okay for scientists to try these experiments because it might help us discover something and we will never fully understand the Earth if we do not take chances. The title creates an ethical appeal because it references a religious authority and it is a question of right or wrong.

  23. Planet hacking is the large-scale, technological manipulation of the earth's climate. Spice is the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering. Spice works with a group from Cambridge.
Stratospheric aerosols is one form of geoengineering mentioned in the article. This project would cause some of the heat to refrain from reaching Earth's atmosphere by reflecting many sun rays back to Earth. This is a pretty practical process.
Another geoengineering project is space reflectors. This involves creating a giant glass sunshade in space and then placing it into orbit, which could reflect a small amount of the sun's rays. It is somewhat practical.
Ocean fertilization is another geoengineering project mentioned. By dropping iron fillings in the ocean, plankton is created; the plankton absorb CO2 and carry it with them as they die and sink to the bottom of the ocean. This process is not very practical.
Another form of geoengineering is artificial trees. In this process, special machinery that can extract 1,000 times more CO2 a day from the atmosphere than a natural tree are needed to be put around the world. This is the most practical form of geoengineering mentioned in the article.
The last geoengineering project mentioned in the article is afforestation. It involves planting real trees, and also painting the roofs of houses white or covering stretches of desert with material that is reflective to deflect unwanted radiation. This is the least practical of all the geoengineering projects mentioned.
I believe that it is okay for scientists to perform these experiments because they are doing it for our good, not to harm people or the environment. The title is appealing to the reader's ethical side. The title is forcing the reader to choose if they believe that these experiments are a good thing or a harmful thing, by hinting that the experiments are a very controversial issue.

"Planet hacking", or geo-engineering, is a process which includes various ways of manipulating Earth's atmosphere in order to control the rising temperatures and climate changes. Spice, the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering, is a team of scientist that theorize that by injecting water particles into the sky Earth's rising temperatures will eventually begin to wane.Spice works with the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The geo-engineering projects described are as follows:
    1. Stratospheric Aerosols- The dispersal of sulfates into the atmosphere, as exhibited by volcanoes, would reflect light from the sun off the Earth; however, weather patterns would be greatly disturbed.
    2. Space Reflectors- Space reflectors could reflect the suns rays, much like the sulfates; however, the maintenance of the reflectors would sequentially cause budgets specified for environmental control to fluctuate.
    3. Ocean Fertilization- By filling the ocean with iron filings, the rate at which algae is produced would increase causing the amount of plankton to increase causing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to decrease; however, this solution puts marine life at risk.
    4. Artificial Trees- Artificial trees would produce more oxygen and counteract the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (they would also become more beneficial than regular trees due to the fact that they would not take so long to grow), but they would become costly at $600 per tonne of carbon dioxide removed.
    5. Afforestation- While afforestation is a more pleasing method of geo-engineering to those who do not wish to use modern technology in their efforts to prevent drastic climate changes, it also consumes time not allotted by present conditions.
I do believe it is okay for scientist to participate in the aforementioned experiments. By configuring various solutions of managing mother nature, science may manufacture less harmful methods of maintenance consequentially due to trial and error, which govern the principles on which science is based. Due to the lack of time allotted in this particular situation it is necessary that scientist further their methods.I believe that an impartial method of Earth preservation will be configured with the capability to bear consideration for time, money, and ethics.
The articles title makes a strong ethical appeal. "Let's Play God" is the statute on which the appeal is made due to it's basis in religion. It affects those who feel that man should not meddle in mother nature's affairs by instruments that result consequences greater than those distributed by nature itself. This particular part of the title says that no one man, no group of people should be able to tamper with what has already been established; the amount of power in this appointment is too great for man alone, it ruptures a tacit balance amongst man. The title begs inquiry on the ethical boundaries of the task at hand.

Spice stands for Stratosphere Particle Injection for Climate Engineering. They work with the Cambridge group theorizing plant hacking. Planet hacking is an application of geoengineering. It's main point is to reduce global warming. The 5 geoengineering theories all have great strategies to reduce sun rays, reduce Co2, and reduce unwanted radiation. Unfortunately, they do have many drawbacks that could affect the planet Earth. It is okay for scientists to do these types of experiments as long as they are 100% sure no one or anything will be harmed. Planet Earth is already bad enough with global warming, & if something goes wrong in the experiment, things could go worse. I know the point of an experiment is to find out/ discover, but it is not worth spending a whole bunch of money and risking to mess up the global weather any more than it is already. So if the scientist are not 100% sure about the experiment, they do not need to do it. The title has a sense of propaganda because it is used to promote or publicize a particular point of view.

The five different types of geo-engineering are Stratospheric Aerosois, Space Reflectors, Ocean Fertilasation, Artificial Trees, and Afforestation.Stratospheric Aerosois work to stop the sun's rays from reching earth to prevent overheating and global warming. Space Reflectors help manage global warming by sending a giant, glass sunshade so it could reflect a small amount of the sun's rays. Ocean Fertilsation drops iron filings into the ocean to generate blooms of carbon absorbent plankton. Artificial Trees help elimintate large amounts of Carbon Dioxide per day from the atmosphere. Afforestation helps create forests. I think its okay for scientists to do these experiments because it s helping our atmosphere and preventing climate or geologic problems that could harm the earth. They can only do so much, before their solution or tests that they do harm the earth more than helping the earth. The title of this article reflect a ethnical appeal because its mentions God, and how scientists are doing experiments that might save the world, relating to the fact that God created the Earth, and all things in it, but scientists may have a better solution to the enviromental problems

  30. 1. Planet Hacking is a large scale manipulation of the climate. It is trying to change the climate with human help.

    2. Spice is the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering.

    3. They work for Cambridge University.

    4. Stratospheric Aerosals-This is when we try to reflect the sun's rays using natural methods such as Volcanos. This is risky because it could change weather patterns drastically.
Space Reflectors-This is basically a giant glass sunshade. This would be to expense and hard to maintain due to space debris. To get an image of this, think of a space umbrella
    Ocean Fertilisation
This process would be dropping iron in to the ocean to help create a lot of carbon absorbing plankton. When the plankton die, they drop to the bottom of the ocean causing "carbon sinks"
Artificial Trees-Machines that extract 1,000 times more CO2 a day than a tree. The cost to make these are really high.
Afforestation-This are the normal solutions that we can do daily. Examples are painting roofs white, planting real trees and putting reflective materials in the desert. This is just not enough fast enough.

These type experiments are fine as long as they don't cause more harm than good. Also, experiments that would affect the general population do not need to be performed.

The title of this article screams propaganda. The reader can tell just by the title what the author feels. The term "play God" gives a negative vive. It immediately makes the reader think bad things about the experiments and the whole processes.

  31. 1. Planet hacking is the process of climate engineering. Scientists sometimes try to interfere with the Earth’s natural climate in order to reduce global warming.

    4. First, stratospheric aerosols would help cool the Earth by reflecting the sun’s rays back to space. Second, using space reflectors would essentially be like building mirrors in space to reflect some of the sun’s rays away from Earth. Third, Ocean fertilization involves depositing iron filing in the ocean that would promote the growth of algae which would convert heat from the sun’s rays into energy through photosynthesis. Fourth, Artificial trees would be used to extract Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Fifth, Afforestation would require planting real trees for the purpose of extracting CO2 from the atmosphere.
    5. I think these experiments would only be okay as a last resort. I agree with the suggestion that we should primarily focus on reducing global warming by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. That is more of a long term solution that “planet hacking”

Planet hacking is the large-scale, technological manipulation of the climate, also known as geoengineering. SPICE is the stratospheric particle Injection for Climate Engineering, SPICE works with the group of researchers at Cambridge. There are five primary geoengineering discussed in the article. The first is Stratospheric Aerosols which purpose is to reflect heat from the sun's rays back into space. Global weather patterns could be drastically affected from the aerosols. Second is Space Reflectors which are giant glass sunshades in space to be fired into orbit it could reflect back some of the sun's rays, maintenance of these reflectors would be highly expensive. Ocean fertilization is the third spoke of and it is done by dropping iron fillings into the ocean to generate blooms of carbon absorbing plankton. This would result in the devastation of marine life. Artificial trees is another engineering experiment and they would have the same use of real trees with faster results. Artificial trees come with a high cost and beg the question- where would we put these trees if we have already taken over the space where trees were. Lastly, afforestation is the idea of planting real trees and painting roofs white , along with covering deserts in reflective material material to bounce back unwanted radiation. I do not think it is appropriate for scientists to conduct these types of experiments since it can drastically affect the human race, as well as, marine life. The goal is to help the environment, not find other ways of hurting it. Scientists can make it as clear as possible to society/the world that what we do daily has a monumental effect on our environment. The title of the article creates an ethical and pathetic appeal. It is an ethical appeal since it alarms many people that humans are trying to play God, and it is a red flag that perhaps what's happening is not right. The pathetic appeal is made by the use of God, since God is the highest power to a percentage of the population.

    4. Stratospheric Aerosols is volcanic eruptions, which release a huge amount of sulphate particles, have led to periods of cooling. This may be the fastest fixes to golbal warming but also risky. Space Reflectors is a giant glass sunshade in space then firing it into orbit could reflect a small proportion of the sun's rays thus make warming more manageable. Ocean fertilisation is dropping iron fillings into the ocean to create carbon sinks. Artificial trees is a machine extracting CO2 more than a natural tree. Afforestation is to bounce back unwanted radiation but would not be enough to avert the worst of climate control.
    5. No, it is not right to change the climate or mother nature. They are playing God and that's not right. The government should take a closer look into how we can prevent global warming. In the next decade will there still be glaciers? Will global warming and pollution destroy the Earth?
    6. The title is saying these people are playing God and not letting mother nature take it's course. The title is propaganda because it makes the reader choose if this is a good thing or bad. If it will save the earth or destroy it.

"Planet hacking" is a name given to geoengineering, the "...large-scale, technological manipulation of the climate".
Spice (Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering) is the name of the Cambridge group of researchers that planned an experiment in the East Anglia sky to reduce the increasing of the world temperature; they work with the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).
Researchers are studying many different solutions to global warming; one of these geoengineering projects is the creation of stratospheric aerosols, consisting in artificial volcanic eruptions that would release sulphate particles, which reflect part of the sun rays back into space. Another one is the construction of space reflectors, giant glass sunshades that would reflect two percent of the sun rays. Another solution is dropping iron filings in the ocean to provoke the growth of CO2-absorbing planktons. A project that has already been developed is the realization of machines that extract CO2 from the air, 1000 times more than a normal tree every day. Finally, afforestation - the planting of trees - is a solution that would be possible without "engineering" the climate but would produce a very poor result.
Research is a fundamental aspect in the survival of the human race and the planet, but the artificial modification of climate shouldn't be the solution for the global problems. First of all, the danger comes from the fact that scientists can't really predict the consequences of their experiments in a large amount of time: the climate is made of very complicated mechanisms that could be affected maybe not in five ore ten years, but in a hundred, or a thousand. Secondly, since as we all know everybody can make mistakes, it's terrible to think that a little mistake, or oversight, made by a single man may provoke much bigger harm to the whole global system. Moreover, as also the Spice team explains, the results of these kinds of experiments may be used in the wrong way, like in warfare; for example, research on the power of atomic division has been used in worldwide conflicts in the past. Finally, the direction that the research should take should be another one, the creation of ways for which the man can reduce his impact on the global climate, and not try to create the "silver bullet" that Jim Thomas of ETC talks about. And not only that: inventing solar panels and electric cars is not enough, because the research should be taken forward to find a way to make these things cheaper and more available than more polluting methods.
The title creates a pathetic appeal on the reader, comparing the activity of researchers to a game of "playing God" and placing one next to the other the two opposite possible consequences: save or destroy the world.

    1. If scientists are not allowed to do "these types of experiments" then what can they do to help the climate? Overall there are more benefits than consequences for some of the experiments listed, such as artificial trees or stratospheric aerosols. Their practicality scored 5/10 and 6/10, with seemingly little drawbacks when compared to the vast improvements it would make on our climate. The benefits of many of these experiments listed are much greater than the drawbacks, considering Earth's climate will thrive after carrying out the experiments.
