AP Language and Composition Current Events Blog for Week of October 19

This week's current events blog is a little different.

Instead of you reading a blog and answering questions about it, you will, instead, find a blog and write questions about it.  Here are the guidelines:

1. Find an online article that relates a story about someone who had to overcome adversity.
2. In the comments section of this post, write a paragraph-long summary of the story.
3. Come up with five questions that you could ask someone about the story.  These should be both "recall" questions (Who said this?  Who is this person? etc.) and "debatable" questions (questions with no clear-cut answer).  Type out these questions underneath your summary.

    http://billygraham.org/story/joni-eareckson-tada-on-disability-god-if-i-cant-die-show-me-how-to-live/
Joni Eareckson Tada is a true overcomer. At the age of seventeen she had a diving accident, leaving her a quadriplegic. Her disability caused her to be depressed, angry, and suicidal until she cried out to God saying, "God if I can't die, show me how to live." Now, every day Jesus is who gives her the strength she needs to cope with her struggles and have happiness instead of sadness. Now, she sees a reason to rejoice over her disability, for it allows her to tell others about Christ and his infinite love. Not only does she minister to those in need by speaking at events but she also encourages others by being an artist, singer, radio host, and author. Joni's main message through it all remains constant: even though you may not receive physical healing from a situation, you can receive a spiritual healing, allowing you to overcome any challenge and have continual joy. Joni works with the Billy Graham Crusades, ministering to people the wonderful message that when you trust in Him, you can overcome any tough situation; she herself is the living proof.

    1. How old was Joni when she had her accident?
    2. In what mental and physical conditions did Joni's accident leave her in?
    3. What kinds of work does Joni do to offer encouragement to others?
    4. Do you think Joni's argument for living with a disability would make a strong argument against the "assisted dying" act? Why?
    5. What is your opinion on Joni's message? Do you believe that spiritual healing, not physical healing, is enough for one to overcome a tough situation?

“Transgender widow”, Nikki Araguz Loyd, lost her firefighter husband, Captain Thomas Araguz. He was in the line of duty when he was killed. Nikki’s marriage was voided only a month after his passing. People who were supposed to support her, such as friends, coworkers of Thomas’s, and family all abandoned her. She was shamed for being transgender. Nikki was invited by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to the annual “Survivors Conference”, where she felt secure. However, since her marriage was voided she could not be honored or recognized as a widow. Almost five years later, after remarrying, her marriage was deemed official to her late husband and the NFFF organization invited her back to be recognized. Nikki finally felt relief and pride as a “transgender widow” after receiving her flag and being recognized by the President of the United States Barack Obama.
    1. Who is the transgender widow?
    2. What adversity did Nikki face?
    3. What organization invited Nikki to their annual conference?
    4. Why was Nikki not able to be recognized as a survivor?
    5. In your opinion, should family, friends, and others support someone in a tragedy even if that person has done something they do not agree with? Why?

this article shows how refugees in europe are struggling with things such as rape, and sexual predators. many "officials" of different groups believe there is no problem of sexual predators or rape cases among these refugees, and saying there is also no gender problem. however, many refugees, young girls or older women, are finding out it is a problem because of overcrowded hotels and bathrooms making it an easy area to abduct someone, or because they need things such as food and water, and many men see this as a chance to take advantage of them. these problems are occurring also because no one knows exactly how many refugees are crossing any boarder at any time, so there is no way to know how many women there are. because of this many do not receive medical attention either, so many things could go unnoticed.

    1. how old is the first girl in the story and what is her name?

My article is about Stephen Sumner, who was in a scooter accident. One day, as he was riding his scooter, a motorist crashed into him breaking his collarbone, ribs, his arm and leg were crushed. Unfortunately, the doctors were only able to save the arm. They had to amputate his leg right below the knee. He has had many a nightmares about this accident from different angles. This was caused mainly by the phantom pain that he was experiencing in his nonexistent leg. He said it was excruciating pain. The doctors gave him him a prosthetic leg to see if that would ease the pain. It did but he still had excruciating pain. Finally, he started the mirror therapy. This helped him so much that he stopped having the phantom pain. Instead of being pessimistic about his life, he decided that he wanted to help those with lost limbs by teaching them how to use the mirror to heal their pain.

    2. In the article it talks about the first three women to pass through Ranger school. The three soldiers names are Maj. Lisa Jaster, Capt. Kristen Griest, and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver. These three women had to over come a male ran organization and pass the hardest training known to man. The three soldiers had to do the recycle program in which they cant pass the four phases of training but can go back and restart training from day one. Only 50% of those who go through ranger training pass and less than 30% of the 50 go all the way through without recycling. Two male soldiers were given the chance to recycle but they didn't. The training last 62 days and when Jaster graduates she will have been in training 180 days.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was an upcoming politician when he was randomly stricken with polio, which would partially cripple him for life. The media thought this would be the end of FDR, but he did not let his condition change him. Oprah Winfrey is a perfect example of how hard work and how having a philosophy by which you live by, can take you anywhere. She is now the only black woman on the forbes list for the top 400 richest people in america. she was born to a teenager mom and spent the first few years of her life on her grandmothers farm. she then spent her early preteen years living in a boarding where she grew up in poverty and endured physical and sexual abuse. She was first raped at the age of 9 by her 19 year old cousin. She began to work hard through high school and got herself a full scholarship to TSU but left college early to pursue a career in media. She rose to the top and soon had her own show called the oprah winfrey show. She has become extremely popular and is now a multi billionaire.
    1. At what age did oprah move in with her father?
    2. Who was Oprah's mentor when it came to living life a certain way?
    3. What state did oprah first live in?
    4. She became the first what before the age of 20?
    5. With Oprah coming from one of the worst background you can come from, and rising to the top to become a billionaire, does this mean that people with "disadvantages" in life, deserve extra benefits in order to "make something out of their life", or no because it is capable to rise from the bottom like oprah did? How much affect do you think one's childhood have on the way their life turns out?

He spent 127 hours surviving with only a few ounces of water and very little food. In a split decision when he was nearing death he decided to amputate his own arm to set himself free. It has become very common to see only "average" people in advertisements for most major companies. So common that Target's recent release of a catalog that featured a child with Spina Bifida made the news. The young girl in the ad supports herself with her crutches while modeling a Queen Elsa Halloween costume, alongside several other children in Halloween attire. The ad quickly gained a lot of support from families of disabled children who felt their children were finally being represented to the world in a casual way.

These children face many adversities in their life in schools and in foster care as they learn to grow up in a different way than their peers. However, studies have shown that if these children

  48. The author's toddler son Vincent was not meeting childhood development benchmarks in speech. This alarmed his pediatrician, so he suggested his parents take him to a speech therapist. They reluctantly agreed, but because Vincent was meeting other benchmarks with flying colors, they held off, in hopes that he would mature soon at his own pace. However, when that didn't happen, they eventually caved and solicited the help of a speech therapist, who advised them to do the things to help Vincent that they'd been doing all along- "talk to Vincent in short sentences; name the toys and food and ask Vincent to repeat before satisfying him; encourage him when he makes progress; be patient." Things were pretty much the same, until Vincent's mother took a 3-week retreat away from home, her first time being away from him since his birth. He began counting, saying the alphabet, and talking in sentences. Of course this was great, but her worry now was that she had been so engulfed in her child passing standards set by professionals than in his actual development.

This caused his mouth to permanently droop and his tongue, chin, lips, and lower left side of his mouth to be partially paralyzed. He was expelled from fourteen different schools by the age of twelve and was voted "most likely to end up in the electric chair." Before Stallone was famous he wrote a movie script and was homeless. He was alone other than having the company of his dog. He could no longer afford to feed his dog, so he had to sell him; the price was for only fifty dollars. His movie script was his only hope, so he tried selling it. Hollywood producers fell in love with the script and offered Stallone 350,000 dollars for it; however, Stallone would not accept the offer unless he could be the star of the movie, but they did not want him to be because they thought that he looked and talked funny. Finally, Stallone got what he wanted. The movie, Rocky, won Stallone best actor of the year, and was able to buy his best friend back (his dog) for a small amount of 3,000 dollars. Stallone is now an extremely famous actor, starring in many movies.
    1) Who caused Stallone's facial problems?
    2) How many times had Stallone been expelled from school before he was thirteen?
    3) How much did Stallone sell his dog for? How much did he buy it back for? Why did he sell it in the first place?
    4) How much money was Stallone initially offered for his movie script?
    5) What is the name of the movie that Stallone wrote?
    6) Do you think that Stallone should have turned down the offer of 350,000 dollars for his movie script just because he wanted to be the star of the movie? Would your answer be different if you did not know that Stallone stars in many films now? Why or why not?

In Haiti, the people feel as though the election was thrown in favor of a government backed candidate. Now, citizens are crying out for a fair election. There has been an agreement to have another election at a later date. The line between Democracy and a Dictatorship is beginning to blur in Haiti.

    1. How many people marched to the Electoral Council?
    2. When was the first "genuinely" democratic election held?
    3. Who is the spokesperson of the electoral council?
    4. Who seems to be the only candidate actively campaigning?
    5. Should Haiti adopt a new constitution?
