Pre-AP English 9 Current Events Blog for Week of February 15

This week's current events blog is a little different.  Instead of reading a story that I post and then responding to questions about the story, I want each of you to search the internet and find a recent story (posted within the last five years) that has to do with love or friendship.  In order to receive credit, you must complete the following:

1. Post the link to the article.
2. Write a summary of the article.
3. Write five questions that relate to the article.  (At least one of the questions can't be a simple recall question and must require deeper thought.  This can be an opinion question, a question that relates the article to something we've read in class, etc.)

For the extra effort this week, the current events blog will be worth thirty points.

Enjoy!

Many of those myths people put out about what happens to you when you are in love are actually proven to be true. Everybody who is or have been in love have had the exact or similar symptoms that other people who have or been in love have experienced. Your body reacts in very strange ways, but people may blame it on other things when in reality it’s because they are in love with their partner. These things happen to couples of different genders, because if you are in a relationship with another person of the same gender these things that happen to couples of different genders won’t happen. There might be a possible chance that it can or will happen to you, but studies have shown that it mainly or only happens in couple with people of different genders.
    1. How can being in love give you superpowers?
    2. How can falling in love mess with your hormones?
    3. Is it true that love can literally break your heart?
    4. True of False. When you get married you will not live a longer healthier life.
    5. In your opinion do you think these symptoms of how your body reacts when a person falls in love can happen to any couple no matter what gender(s) the couple is? Why?

2: It talks about the ways friendships can help and harm your happiness. It talks about having close friendships and how it helps to have someone to talk to your problems about so you don't have to carry all of the pent-up emotions. It also talks about how it might make you less happy to take out the bad friends in your life. The main thing they want people to learn is that you should value your friendships.
3: What makes us uniquely human?
What did Lisa Berkman say about people that have a lot of friends?
Why are women seen as better listeners?
In your opinion, are you happier without the bad friends?
Do you believe people underestimate friendships? If so, why? If not,
    why?

This article is a personal narrative from author Maggy van Eijk about her experiences on pro-anorexia websites, and the friendships she made on them. Pro-anorexia websites are specifically created for and by women who struggle with eating disorders. Eijk began to be active on these websites around 14, and over the course of 4 years, her involvement escalated. She had deep, personal relationships with the other girls on the websites, especially a girl named Maddie who went to her school. Although they never got together in real life, Maggy and Maddie told each other everything, including all the details of their secret shames: eating disorders. They were able to confide in each other without fear of judgement. Now, years later, Maggy looks back on her experiences on the sites with gratitude and a touch of sadness. Even though she has now recovered from her eating disorder and lives a happy life, she keeps in touch with some of the women she met, and will never forget the deep friendships she made during this difficult time.

1.How did Maggy and Maddie’s friendship develop?
    2.What is a pro-ana website?
3.Do you think the internet makes it easier or harder for young women to develop eating disorders? Why or why not?

Sadly, they don't match Jimmie Sue, but he's hoping that they find someone soon. This article is about a series of real-life love stories, all unique in their own ways. The one I focused on is the story of Gladys and Harold Beebe. The old couple have been married for 62 years with three children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Gladys and Harold met when their friend arranged a triple date, though Gladys and Harold both went on the date with someone else. It was only when Harold told Gladys that he made a mistake by not going out with her and asked her on another date several more times (she turned him down at first) when their story really began.
    Questions:
    1. How old was Gladys when she first met Harold?
    2. Where did Gladys and Harold go on their first official date?
    3. Why did Gladys keep it a secret from her parents that she married Harold?
    4. What football team do they root for when they watch?
    5. Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not? If so, how do you believe the story of Gladys and Harold ties into it?

A few years later Vicki and Bill had had two children, and Vicki stopped using cocaine and asked Bill to leave. One day Vicki heard of Jesus Christ, and later on she, her son, and her daughter all received Christ. They then started to pray for Bill. In 1990 Bill felt that he couldn't continue how he had been living, and a few months later he received Christ, too. Bill went to rehab for his addiction and soon moved back in with his family. Now, Vicki has a ministry, and sometimes even Bill will join in with her, or alone, on stage to speak.
