AP Language and Composition Current Events Blog for Week of February 15

This week's current events blog is a little different.  Instead of reading a story that I post and then responding to questions about the story, I want each of you to search the internet and find a recent story (posted within the last five years) that has to do with some type of leadership incorporating new technology in its governance.  In order to receive credit, you must complete the following:

1. Post the link to the article.
2. Write a summary of the article.
3. Write five questions that relate to the article.  (At least one of the questions can't be a simple recall question and must require deeper thought.  This can be an opinion question, a question that relates the article to something we've read in class, etc.)

For the extra effort this week, the current events blog will be worth thirty points.

Enjoy!

With the help of Martha Dorris, websites have been greatly modified to include search engines, consolidated information through a cloud, frequently asked questions, and several other things on government informational websites. These new features help citizens find information quickly and enables them to connect closer than ever with the services they need. These websites also offer valuable advice and resources that are constantly updated to help citizens be better off than ever. Martha has also created challenge.gov, a marvelous website to challenge citizens and improve society. With these new technologies, Americans are able to receive the valuable information and services they need with great ease.
    1. Who is Martha Dorris and what two websites has she worked on the most?
    2. How many questions does USASearch answer a month?
    3. Who is the administrator of GSA? What does he claim is changing?
    4. What did the Department of Agriculture challenge software developers to do? What won the challenge?
    5. In your opinion, do you think greater access to government information and direct connection for citizens will make America stronger and allow for the government to govern more effectively? Why?
    6. If they had decreased the efficiency of these websites, done away with them completely, or never introduced new technologies, making it difficult for citizens to have direct communication with services and not receive information about the government, do you think America would eventually become like Oceania? Is it the government's job to ensure that citizens have these things? Why do you think so?

    - A Russian company, Specialized Tactical Systems, believe they have invented an anti-sniper device, reportedly up to 2.5km away. It's said to locate a sniper by the glint of glass or heat of the objective lens and includes a day/night thermal imager. Once a sniper is located, they are blinded by a laser or for a "permanent solution," an Oris T-5000 or .338 Lapua Magnum can be used. The device was supposedly sent to Venezuela where it prevented the assassination of its President Hugo Chavez.

Summary : If their was one person that I could think that has taken the most advantage over new Technology, it would be President Obama. The President is the first President to ever Campaign on Social Media, reaching a wider, younger audience that might not be normal news fanatics. President Obama relied solely on social media for his announcement on college affordability, Immigration and Net neutrality. Although its true that most readers still get their news first over Newspapers, social media usage has been steadily inclining. The President has about two dozen people who help script new posts and create short videos to post on his social media platforms every single day. Over the near eight years of his presidency, Obama's ratings have greatly increased, mainly due to his strong usage of social media as part of his campaigning process.

    - The article talks about how we need to change the way that we currently teach students to learn. The first way is by changing the layout of the classroom and not having all of the desks in a row and the teacher in front, but teachers walking around the classroom and students working in groups. The second way is by having students use such websites like YouTube and other site so the students can learn at their own rate. 1.How many apple products?
    2.What software did they band?
    3.What branch have we charged.
4.How many of this branch were charged.
5.How well known are our cyber battles with China?
6.Do you think it's right for China's leader to be able dictate their usage of technology? Why or why not.

Summary: China has band the use of certain apple products including iPads and that makes America very cautious about using products from them as well. China has also said to stop using antivirus. We criticize China for the control but they come back with saying we spy on everyone even our own people. It doesn't help that we have 5 of their military charged with cyber charges. So neither side are happy and it doesn't seem to be getting better.

    http://www.brookings.edu/blogs/techtank/posts/2015/02/9-government-cloud-computer-transition

Since 2009 the federal government has been replacing local computers with cloud platforms. Cloud computers are superior to local servers because they are more cost and energy efficient. Privacy and security are also major challenges because government servers host data that Americans expect to remain private. Converting government systems to the cloud will require the government’s full confidence that cloud systems are at least as secure as the local servers they are replacing.

    1. What are the six specific cloud benefits?

    2. What are some challenges of migrating to the cloud?

    3. Are you concerned by security issues associated with the government using cloud computing?

    4. What year did government spending on IT reach its peak?

    5. At what value did government spending on IT peak?

Classrooms today still incorporate past teaching techniques, technology just assists in this process. The idea of a "flipped" classroom has come into play, where the students do the learning at home and the working at school. The only problem is that parents do not want changes to be incorporated if they are a failure. The incorporation of online learning and games can increase kids opportunities, especially in 3rd world countries. Games can also be beneficial by implementing a "points system", students who earn more points reap benefits such as turning in homework later.

Uganda used a new spyware software in its election to survey and watch those who they have reason to believe are against the government. This causes concern for the people who believe the government will continue this software to use on people and watch those who they have any reason to accuse of civil disobedience. This software gives the election candidates access to arrest those who may be endangering their campaign and/or the common people.

1 which president first used the software during his campaign?

2 what is the name of the spyware?

3 what does the operations name mean?

4 how many were arrested or detained due to the spyware?

5 do you believe such spyware is okay to use, in terms that it is only used to watch those that the government believes are against the government or involved of any sort of terrorism? what makes the government suspicious of such people? is this justified for a president to use to gain the election?

2.) At Patapsco High School, a new principal, Ryan Imbriale, decided to bring in a bigger emphasis on technology. He said that before he arrived there, there was only a few business labs and one computer lab. The technology used in these labs was not seen as reliable, and students rarely visited these places. Now, because of the new leadership there, they offer an online class Pre- College science, and now students dont have to use their textbooks as often. They also started a student app club called APPlied which helps students brainstorm and has an audience of millions. Overall, their new leadership help the school excel in many ways.
3.) 1. Who was the person who helped turn the schools focus in a new direction?
    2. In what places were they using technology before?
    3. What is the name of the online class that replaces textbooks?
    4. What does the APPlied app help students do?
