http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20150114/NEWS/150119810/1012/opinion?Title=EDITORIAL-Tweak-law-but-drivers-should-have-permit

Answer the following questions:

1. What is an editorial? (The answer is not in the article; you'll have to look this up on your own.)
2. What state senator is trying to pass a bill related to carrying guns in a vehicle?  What is the main point of his bill?
3. As the law currently stands, in the authors' opinion, what are the major problems with obtaining a concealed-carry permit in Alabama?
4. How do the authors of this editorial feel about Americans' rights to bear arms?  What evidence do they give to support these rights?
5. Do you think that people should be able to carry weapons in their vehicles?  Do you think that people should be able to carry weapons at all?

    1) An editorial, leading article (UK) or leader (UK), is an opinion piece written by the senior editorial staff or publisher of a newspaper, magazine, or any other written document.
    2) Gerald Allen
    3) the author stated "the statute addressing concealed weapons permits hands over too much power to the county sheriff. The law is vague enough that it appears the sheriff can deny permits arbitrarily. It does not establish criteria for rejecting a permit, nor does it compel sheriffs to issue permits in the absence of any established criteria."
    4) they "believe in the right of individual citizens to own firearms, both long guns and handguns." ; by referring to the constitution.
    5) I'm torn about this question. I think anyone carrying a gun needs major background checks and an even bigger deep into their past life, so we can make sure they aren't ill or violent and want the weapon for wrong reasons. it can be both beneficial and horrid to be allowed to carry a gun in your vehicle. it could protect you, but it could be used to kill purposefully just as easily. a permit and a check into the persons life should definitely be required.

    1. an article in a newspaper or other periodical or on a website presenting the opinion of the publisher, writer, or editor.
2.Alabama's sen Gerald Allen, to make it legal to carry a loaded gun in a vehicle without obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
3.the statute addressing concealed weapons permits hands over too much power to the county sheriff.
    4. they believe we should have the right, "We believe in the right of individual citizens to own firearms, both long guns and handguns. The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly establishes that right and the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld it"
    5. when it comes to carrying a weapon in a vehicle im sort of in between because if the person carrying the weapon feels unsure about their safety it is understandable. yes i do believe that people should be able to carry weapons as a form of self defense but their should be restrictions on who can carry the weapon like if someone was mentally unstable i don't believe they should be allowed a weapon in public places.

    1. A newspaper article written by or on behalf of an editor that gives an opinion on a topical issue.
    2. Senate Gerald Allen is the state senator trying to pass a bill related to carrying guns in a vehicle. The main point of the bill is so that common citizens to be able to protect themselves in the case of finding themselves in the middle of a criminal activity.
    3. In the author’s opinion, the major problems with obtaining a concealed-carry permit in Alabama are it hands over too much power to the county sheriff. The law is vague enough that it appears the sheriff can deny permits arbitrarily. It does not establish criteria for rejecting a permit, nor does it compel sheriffs to issue permits in the absence of any established criteria.
    4. The authors believe that American’s right to bear arms is right. They use The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the author’s says that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the right to bear arms.
    5. I have my unique opinion on both questions. I don’t think that people should carry guns in their vehicles or in general PERIOD unless it’s for a 110% necessary cause. I don’t think that people should carry guns in their car 24/7 because if someone has a road rage, maybe an idiot can just grab their gun and shoot them for NO REASON on site. But overall it depends on the type of situation and/or how important/urgent it is for a person to freely carry around a gun PERIOD.

    1) An editorial is an opinion piece written by the senior editorial staff or publisher of a newspaper, magazine, or any other written document.
    2) Senator Gerald Allen is trying to pass a bill related to carrying guns in a vehicle. The main point of his bill is to allow people to carry a loaded gun in their vehicle without a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
    3) The authors say that it hands over too much power to the county sheriff because they could reject it without good reason. It has no criteria for rejecting permits. The law on this kind of thing is unclear and needs to be clarified.
    4) The authors of this editorial agree support the right to bear arms. They state in the last paragraph on the first page that they believe citizens have the right to bear firearms. They also state that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution establishes that, and the Supreme Court has upheld it.
    5) I think people should be able to carry weapons in their vehicles and anywhere in general. There are all kinds of evil in the world and you never know when danger will strike. It is good to be prepared and have some kind of weapon to use to be able to defend yourself. It is good to at least have a fighting chance.

  5. Carter Billings 3rd (1 An editorial is an article the presents the newspaper's opinion on an issue. (2 It is Senator Gerald Allen and the main point of the bill is to be able to have a gun in the vehicle with you without having a concealed weapons permit. (3 The major problems with the permit is that it hands to much power to the county sheriff dealing with the denying of permits. (4 The author believes that we have the right to bear arms, which we do. We see this through the author writing in the editorial the Second Amendment. (5 People should be able to carry weapons in their car if they have to proper permit. As long as they have the correct paperwork they should be able to carry weapons with them. The Second Amendment is clearly stated and should be upheld.

    1. The preparing of a writing material for publication.
    2. Gerald Allen. He wants you to be allowed to carry guns without a permit in a vehicle.
    3. It gives the sheriff a lot of power if they get the permit from a driver, and the ability to deny it.
    4. The author's believe that you should be able to carry firearms, because at the end, it says the second amendment is our right of the people to be allowed to carry firearms.
    5. I think people should be able to carry firearms because if you banned them, it would'nt really solve much. If people really are violent and want to harm others, they can easily still get their hands on a weapon if they were determined. So, banning won't really solve a problem at all. We have the right to bear arms and i strongly believe that we shouldnt have our rights taken away that were created for the people by the people.

1- a newspaper article written by or on behalf of an editor that gives an opinion on a topical issue
2- state senator Gerald Allen; being able to carry a loaded gun in your vehicle.
3- It gives too much power to the county sheriff and does not establish criteria for rejecting a permit and doesn't say sheriffs can issue permits in the absence of criteria.
4- He says he believes in the right to bear arms and he shows it by quoting the constitution and literally saying he believes in it.
5- Yes, i think that we have the right to protection and to bear arms its been in our constitution for so long why not just leave it there.

    1. An editorial is an newspaper article that gives an opinion and is not related to advertisements.
    2. Senator Gerald Allen is trying to pass a bill that relates to being able to carry a loaded weapon concealed in a vehicle. Allen states that they were not mind readers and there was no real way that they could know if there was one or not.
    3. It gives the county sheriff too much power and the ability to deny permits randomly.
    4. They believe that it is an individual citizen's right to own a firearm, as stated in the second amendment; and that constitutional rights should not be limited my a random power.
    5. I think that people should be able to carry a weapon concealed in their vehicle if they have received a background check and passed all the requirements. If they commit a felony or and other sort of crime the price ledge should be taken away.

    3. Handing over too much power to the county sheriff
    4. The author believes in the right to bear arms, because the constitution establishes the right and the Supreme Court has upheld it.
    5. No, because if the wrong people are given that right then they could abuse it, and sadly there are people in Alabama that will abuse this right. Yes, if they have a permit and for the right reasons.

    4. They believe in it and use the 2nd amendment to back them up
    5. I believe in the world we live in that we should be able to practice our 2nd amendment rights and carry a gun or any other concealed weapon. I also believe that we as a people should be able to carry a weapon in our vehicles if a situation arises that we need to defend ourselves or any other troubled citizen.

    2. Gerald Allen; The ability to have concealed weapon, with ammunition, in a car without the need of a permit.
    3. It gives more power to the sheriff and it allows people to transport weapons without a permit.
    4. They think Americans do have the right to bear arms, but not without a permit, because they are worried that if the person does not have a permit, they may not be responsible enough to carry a loaded weapon.
    5. I believe that people have the right to carry weapons, on themselves and in their vehicles, but they should have a permit and a significant reason to carry the weapon. If they are not responsible enough, have anger issues, or they are mentally unstable, then they should not have a weapon, because that would put others who don't have weapons in danger.

III- The author says that the sheriff can deny handing out permits as he pleases.
IV- The editors think that citizens should be able to carry arms and they use the reasoning of the second amendment to support their opinions
V- I don't think citizens (and some law enforcement as of late) should be allowed to carry firearms freely because of the constant acts of violence that they cause.

    1) It is an article written for the editor that gives an opinion on a current event.
    2) Gerald Allen. People should be able to carry loaded weapons in cars without a concealed weapons permit.
    3) The law is too vague and gives the sheriff too much power.
    4) They feel as though every citizen has the right to bear arms. They say that it is stated in the constitution as our 2nd amendment right.
    5) I believe that people should be allowed to carry weapons in their vehicles they should have to be unloaded, out of reach, and in a locked container. I feel as though we are given the right to carry weapons. they can be used for safety reasons, but they can also be used to extremely harm someone. I think that small weapons are okay but you should not be able to carry an assault rifle into a Dairy Queen.

    1. A newspaper article that gives an opinion on an editor's behalf.
    2. Gerald Allen; making it legal to carry a loaded gun in a vehicle without a permit
    3. The sheriff has too much power over the issue and can reject permits without being regulated.
    4. They support it; the upholding of the second amendment
    5. I feel like these things should be regulated. Would the crime rate go down if it was harder to get a hold of weapons? Sure, maybe with time- but this is America, where even if you're doing something for the benefit of the general populace, they'll still find a reason to be mad about it.

    3. It gives too much power to the sheriff.
    4. They say that they support it because of the second amendment.
    5. With the laws that we have now, people should be able to have a loaded gun in their car, but it would be a lot easier for everyone if nobody had any guns whatsoever. This is not possible because "we are Americans" and we need our guns.

    2. Gerald Allen. & people should be able to carry loaded weapons without a loaded weapons permit.
    3. Too much power is in the hands of the sheriff and there is a lack of criteria by which a permit can granted.
    4. They are pro-2nd Amendment and they believe the constitution should be upheld.
    5. I believe we should be able to carry weapons in our vehicle with a permit. In terms of being able to carry weapons at all, I believe every U.S. citizen should be armed at all times, unless they suffer from some sort of disability or they're elderly. Either everyone should have guns, or no one should have guns. This should apply to every human being, including police officers and federal employees.

    2. gerald allen, he wants you to legally be able to carry a loaded gun without a permit
    3. the author says that he thinks it would give the county sheriff too much unreasonable power
4.they support it and think it is correct. they state that we have the right because of the U.S. Constitution and the second amendment.
5.Personally, I think that we should be able to carry freely because of the second amendment, but we need to have a license or regestration for it. We should be able to carry it in our vehicle for certain purposes, but with certain restraints towards it. I think that people should be able to open carry if they're responsible enough to carry one.

    1. An editorial is an article on a website, in a newspaper, ect. that expressed the opinion of the owner or author.
    2. Gerald Allen. To make it legal to carry a loaded gun in a vehicle without having to have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
    3. A major problem would be, it gives too much power to the county sheriff.
    4. They believe that citizens should be able to own long guns and hand guns. Evidence from the 2nd amendment of the U.S. Constitution make this a right to uphold.
    5. I think that is is okay for people to carry weapons in their vehicles and just to carry them only if they have a license for it. I also think that those carrying a weapon should have the right intentions for it; like only using it to protect themselves, their friends, or family. Therefore, it would be safer because there are not people carrying around weapons for fun or revenge but only for protection.

    2. Gerald Allen, to make it legal to carry a loaded gun without a permit.
    3. The county sheriff would hold too much power.
    4. They believe that the second amendment should be upheld giving people the right to carry a weapon.
    5. I do think that people should be able to carry weapons with them for the sake of protection. But I feel that if you're not planning to do anything truly and unnecessarily harmful with the weapon then people wouldn't have any issues with getting a licence and registering the weapon. Sadly we live in a society where bad people make in necessary to have to protect yourself in a seemingly violent way because innocent people have their live threatened every day so no reason.
