AP Language and Composition Current Events Blog for Week of January 19

You have two articles to read this week:

#1- click here  (for this article, read down until the you see the large title, "Free College for All: Dream, Promise, or Fantasy)

#2- click here

Answer the following questions based on article one:

1. Why did President Obama choose Tennessee as the place to promote his community college plan?
2. Who is Sara Goldrick-Rab?  Who is Sandy Baum?  How do each of these women feel about the President's plan?
3. What are some of the drawbacks (PLURAL!) of the government funding community college?
4. How would the plan impact the middle class?

Answer the following questions based on article two:

5. Why does Tom Hanks say that he went to Chabot Community College?
6. How does he say that it bridged the gap between high school and the State University for him?
7. Why does he think that community college is important for the current generation of Americans?

Answer the following questions based on your now-informed-opinion:

8. On what side do you stand of the community-college debate?  Should the government spend more money than it is already spending to pay for millions of students to attend community college for free?

9. If this were to happen, would community colleges take on the same drawbacks and problems as public schools?

    1. President Obama chose Tennessee because they are the only state to successfully allow the residents there can attend a community college for for free.
    2. Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Sandy Baum is an author and educator who has studied the trends of college cost. Sara Goldrick-Rab is all for the plan, she thinks that it is a great idea and is benefiting the middle class more than anyone. She thinks that $8,000 a year is out of reach for many middle-class families. Sandy Baum is doubtful about the plan. She argues that there are already reduced payment for those that can not afford college and the federal government already has scarce funds.
    3. Some of the drawbacks are that when the government starts paying for things, like school, they have a say in what goes on. (i.e. public school) Also, the money that is paying for other people to go to college for free has to come from somewhere, which means it would more than likely come from people's taxes.
    4. This would effect most of the middle class by allowing them to attend a community college for free. Many of them cannot get the Pell Grants but they could be qualified for the free community college.
    5. Tom Hanks went to Chabot Community College because it was free and they accepted everyone.
    6. He said he could get the general education requirements out of the way and then when he went to a university study his major.
    7. He believes that community college is important for the current generation because there are other people than just students trying to get an education to have a career, such as veterans, single parents, mothers, and workers out of the job market. He believes that the idea of postponing college debts will redefine their life's work.
    8. I do not agree with the government allowing students to attend community college completely free. I agree with Sandy Baum in that community college is already a reduced cost and those that actually need it are already getting it for free. While I do think that it is a good idea on paper, the money has to come from somewhere and not everyone is going to get the opportunity.
    9. Absolutely they would take the same drawbacks as public school, because when the government starts paying for things then they have a say in what goes on. For example, if this does become a reality, then I'm sure the government would have a say in what classes are offered and many other things than just just classes.

  2. 1.Because it is the only state to accomplish free community college so far.
2.Rab-professor at University of Wisonsin, Maryland and she believes that free community college is a necessity. Baum- an author and educator who is skeptical about how free college will be funded.
    3. Reallocating already scarce funding and the government can't control how much tuition is at every community college.
    4. On top of Pell Grants, it would help subsidize tuition-free plans all over the country.
5.He couldn't afford tuition at a major university, he wasn't a good enough student for scholarships, and his community college education was free.
6.He was able to take most of his classes for free at community college and finished his credits at State University for $95 per semester.
    7. Because there are numerous types of situations in which people need to be given some slack financially and need lower obstacles/ help until thet can progress to a new part of their lives.
8.I don't agree that the government should be spending more money than it already is for free community college for everyone. Yes, it is hard for lots of people to pay for college and community college even though it is significantly cheaper, but the way I see it is that a free college education shouldn't just be handed out to those who can't afford it. It should be available to those who can't afford community college, but try hard in school and actually care about their future, and make the effort. If a low income student shows hard work and strives to better themselves, they should be awarded a scholarship for free education, but I don't think free college education should be awarded to just anyone by government funding.
    9. yes

    1. This is the only state that has accomplished it.
    2. Goldrick-Rab- professor at the University of Wisconsin says go for it. Baum-Author and educator who has spent time with ideas such as this says no
3.Even lower income for colleges, has no say in how much it should cost
4.tuition and costs is out of reach for lots of middle-income students
5.Because he had no other place to go.
    6. He got the required courses and some fun ones and they would transfer to a University.
7.It would help veterans, mothers, etc to develop people who want a new chapter or the next chapter in their life.
    8. I think the situation is the same as it is in schools. While no one is forcing them to go to college. If it is free many will be in there simply because it its free. If you want to go to college then you will make it happen. You will get the scores, study, apply for scholarships. It is great to have stuff handed to you. But imagine if everyone worked to get to college. How much more they would appreciate it and work for their education instead of sliding by becuase it was free anyways.
    9. Yes they would. There would be a cut in the programs. The federal government would be able to have a say in the courses taught, the curriculum. This would resemble a public high school in a very big way with draw backs of money and courses and regulations.

    1. He started it in Tennessee because they were the first to actually accept it and adopt it.
    2. Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and she says its right on time. Sandy Baum is an author and educator who has spent much of her career studying trends in college costs and she disagrees completely.
    3. The federal government has no say so in how much community colleges charge for tuition and also many community colleges are affordable and even free in some states for low income students.
    4. It would benefit the middle class.
    5. He went there because it was free and they let everyone in.
    6. He started off there for two years after highschool and then transfered to his state's university.
    7. Because theres a lot of veterans and women coming to community college to get a new start or earn better financial opportunities.
    8. I'm pro free college. I believe tuition should be free. But price the text books for the low low.
    9. No not at all. These are older and more mature people who actually want to go to college.

    Article 1:
    1. President Obama chose Tennessee as the place to promote his community college plan because Tennessee is the leader in it because they are more involved with education and are the only state accomplished it they made it where more students could go to community college with out having to a pay a tuition.

    2. Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and she thinks it is a great idea to have free college so the low income people can go to college without worrying about money and get an education. Sandy Baum is a an author and educator who studies trends of the cost of colleges and she thinks yeah free college is good idea but does not she how the federal government will do it and most colleges are already affordable enough and free for low-income students and would just circulate the money and not really help anything.

    3. The Federal Government is already spending so much money on Pell grants that most students are not able to get. They are also spending money on other need-based aid every year with $50-$60 billion. They are spending so much money on education when most people are struggling on paying for the place they live in and they are not getting alot of money to help so they can not pay for school or go to college even if it is free so therefore free college would not help it would just make money go in a circle and might cause more problems.

    4. It would help them go to college and have more money to spend on the house or food and would make people see in the political world that middle class needs help to.

    Article 2:

    5. Tom Hanks went to Chabot Community College because he had lousy SAT scores and was an underachieving student and was not able to get into other colleges and Chabot was free and had lots of free classes that helped with his career and helped him get his core classes out of the way.

6.It helped get core classes out of the way so when he got to the university he could focus on classes for his career but in Chabot they had classes that helped him with his career and some classes he loved and it helped him when he got into the university so it was like a big "pick me up" for him.

7.He thinks it is important because since it helped him it would help some other people who do not have good SAT scores and people who can not afford college or get into a university and another generation mother and veterans can have a chapter in their life to help them save money and have a free class that can help with their life and give them education.

    8. I think community college would be good and help people with education but it would not help with money problems and i think government should spend more money even though most people would go to free college not to spend money even if they have enough because it would be like free pass for them while others would actually need to be able to go to a free college because they can not afford college so at the same time free college would help but it would also not help at the same time.

    9. Community College would go on the same drawbacks and problems as public schools because they would be asking for more money for more stuff with the the more students that apply to the free college and eventually college would be so full and need more money to create more classes and professors to teach the classes so everyone could have an education.

1)Tennessee already has a free community college program funded the lottery.
2)Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the university of Wisconsin and supports the free college idea. Baum doesn't think it would work because of lack of money.
3)Students that have money might take spots that should be used by low income students, and money would just be moved from giving grants to paying for free college.
    4) it would make it easier for people to afford college.
    5) He was a poor student and didn't have the money for a university.
    6) he was able to take good classes cheaply that helped him become who he is today.
    7) because their are veterans, mothers and poor students who need a way to get an education.
    8) if we actually had the money it would be a good idea but community college is still fairly affordable, the money that is spent at university's is what needs some change.
    9) yes, but not as much because still some people would have to pay and going to college is some thing you have to want to do not like being stuck in school.

    1. Tennessee is the only state to have accomplished free two-year college option.
    2. Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Baum is an author and educator who studies college costs. Goldrick-Rab believes in the plan, but Baum is skeptical.
    3. Some drawbacks are how the federal government is going to pay for the free colleges and the fact that the government has no say in tuition fees.
    4. The plan should help the middle class families out as well, allowing them to easily afford college costs.

    5. Tom Hanks claims he went to Chabot Community College due to his low grades and bad SAT scores inhibiting him from affording a costly college, however Chabot was a free option that had plenty to offer.
    6. Chabot bridged the gap between high school and state university for Hanks because it allowed him to get his general education requirements out of the way and allowed him to transfer credits.
    7. Tom believes that community college is important for today's generations of Americans because currently a lot of returning soldiers, high school dropouts/underachievers have nowhere to go to get to the next chapter of their lives.

    8. I don't believe community colleges should be completely free. Cheaper than universities, yes. But not free. The federal government does not have all the money in the world. The teachers may have extremely low salaries due to people NOT PAYING to go to college (like how lunch prices are so high due to students having free or reduced meals). There's a price to pay to go to public schools, private schools, daycare, etc. Why should community colleges be completely free? There should be some charge to keep the system going.

    9. Community colleges would, indeed, take on a lot of the problems and drawbacks as public schools because people are not paying for tuition. Therefore a lot of people tend to abuse the system because in their minds they have nothing to lose by doing so.

    5. Tom Hanks said he went there because it accepted everyone and was free.
    6. It helped him get used to college and made state college easier and more affordable.
    7. He thinks community college is important because you can take cheap general classes there and then transfer to state college and it will be more affordable because they only have to pay for major classes.
    8. I think they should, because everyone deserves an education and its not fair that some people can't get one just because they can't afford it.
    9. It's possible that it could.

1.) Tennessee is the leader in promoting tuition free community college education.
2.) Goldrick- Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin and Baum is an educator and author. They think it will affect the federal government, because it does not regulate people who can afford to go to college and there are programs already in place for low-income students.
3.) Some drawbacks are that funds are already being stretched thin and Pell grants will have to be reallocated, and individual families may have to fork over the added costs through taxes,
4.) They would be taxed farther and may not reap the benefits of the program if they themselves can afford college and they set regulations that only low income students can access the tuition free community colleges.
5.) Tom Hanks went to community college because that was his only choice. He did not have the Sat scores, grade point average, or money to attend a university and was not accepted into the ones he applied to.
6.) He was able to expand his horizon by taking classes not offered at his high school but still accessible to him. He was able to take classes like zoology and physics that were not offered at his high school.
7.) It always the lower class to improve the economy and their paychecks. Community college would be made available to single parents, elderly working class men, and students without the means of attending a large university, It would benefit our economy and provide us with a more educated nation.
8.) Yes, opportunities should be opened towards middle and lower class citizens to attend college without worries of having thousands of dollars in debt. Other countries such as Switzerland provide free education after high school and there stats towards education are higher than ours. By giving more opportunities we could have a smarter country with less people on unemployment. By putting more money towards college eventually they could take funds away from unemployment, because it would begin helping the problem.
9.) With more people attending college and more resources having to be put out for these people it does run the risk of having inadequate education or education at the same level as K12. Although this could be a major drawback it still could be fixed when the diligent with the resources move on to a university and better improve their education there. It would still be an improvement for people who are not able to attend a university because they could learn a trade in community college that could be lead to a beneficial career.

    4. This plan would be very helpful to the middle class because they would be able to produce more jobs in the long run and it would also help the economy.
    5. He mentions that this is his where he attended college to show that community college is better than nothing.
    6. It helped him prepare for the university.
7.Because it will create more jobs in the future.

    3. Some drawbacks are making it free for people who are capable to pay for it and that people will agree on an idea but will not agree on the money plan.
    4. This plan would be very helpful to the middle class because they would be able to produce more jobs in the long run and it would also help the economy.
5.He mentions this to show that community college is better than nothing.
    6. It helped prepare him for state university.
    7. It will help create more jobs in the future.
8 I think that people who are unable to pay for it should have a way to get into college for free. If you can pay for it without any problems then you should not get in for free.

    3. Its wrong to lower our scarce funds when you have low income students who are struggling to pay their living costs, also, 8,000$ income for tuition is way out of reach for even middle-income students.
    4. They would get a lot of political support.
    5. It was free and welcomes everyone, he was proud for that college to be his alma mater.
    6. They could get the credits they needed to transfer.
    7. It helps to start saving while you are in community college before you transfer into a university.
    8. Yes, the government should pay more because everyone deserves that chance not just the low income students.

    2. Sara is a professor at the University of Michigan and she agrees with the Obama's view. Sandy Baum is an author and educator and she believes that it doesn't need to be free for those who can afford to go.
    3. Those who can afford to go now won't have to pay and it's not fair to the low-income students.
    4. It will help them in being able to afford college.
    5. It accepted everyone and it was free.
    6. he could get his basics out of the way and transfer his credits.
    7. If they are financially insecure and they don't want to take on big loans, they can go there and it might change their life.
8.I don't believe they should because it's not like the people with low-income don't already get it for free so it's not really affecting anyone but the middle class. Although the change would help them with their loans and that would be beneficial because they can't get a grant or go for free.
    9. I believe so because it's initially the same thing but they don't have to provide for their meals and not as many students as a state university.

    1. Obama chose to use Tennessee as the place to promote his community college plan because it's the only state that has accomplished a free-tuition community college.
    2. Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin and she co-authored a study titled "Securing America's Future with a Free Two-Year College Option". Baum is an author and educator who has spent most of her career studying college costs. Goldrick-Rab is for free community college, but Baum is against it.
    3. Some of the drawbacks are: The federal government has no say in how much community colleges charge. Community colleges in most states are pretty affordable and already free for low-income students. It's ethically wrong to allocate scarce funds when you already have many low-income students struggle to pay living costs. Proposals that push money around and give more of it to affluent students are not going to solve problems.
    4. The plan might impact the middle class by giving money to people who are well off instead of those who cannot afford it.
    5. Hanks went to Chabot Community College because he had bad SAT scores and he could not afford tuition at an actual university.
    6. It bridged the gap because he could transfer credits to the State University.
    7. He thinks that community college is important because it could help many veterans, low-income students, single parents, and laid off workers enter the new chapter of their lives.
    8. I'm pretty neutral about the situation. Of course the situation could help many people prosper intellectually if they are unable to afford a regular-tuition university, but the situation could also be abused if the people using it are able to afford regular university and are just using it as an outing to get off easy.
    9. Community college could possibly take on the drawbacks of public schools if they do not set a strict regime on how the program would be managed.

    3. Some drawbacks are that the federal government has no say on how much community colleges cost for tuition and some community colleges are pretty affordable.
    4. $8,000 is out of reach for middle class, low income students.

    7. High school graduates without the finances, mothers, single parents, and people who are out of jobs don't have to make big loans just to take a few classes.

    8. I believe the government should make going to a community college free, because everyone is not able. Colleges now are very expensive and it's hard to live life and do things when you have to pay large amount of money for college.
    9. I don't think there would be many drawbacks. In public schools, you still have to pay for lunch, books, etc.

    3. The federal government does not know how much a state’s community college tuitions is, and money is already scarce so there is no room to be giving free tuition to those who can actually afford it.
    4. The middle-class could use funding to pay for community college to their benefits because they are not wealthy enough to pay for college completely but not poor enough to be able to get a loan.
    5. It was the only place that would take him and was free.

    1. Because if he can convince a conservative state that they can do this then other states will want to do it too.
    2. Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin she believes that this fundamental change is exactly what we need right now. Sandy Baum is an author and educator who has spent much of her career studying trends in college costs she thinks that the federal government shouldn’t be able to have a say in if community college is free. She also states that community college is free to low-income students, and that she is worried that people who can actually afford it are getting in for free.
    3. 1 there is too many people to use government funds to pay for college for everybody who is eligible. 2. It is taking money away from other things; if somebody really wants to go to college and they can’t afford it then they have other options like grants and student loans.
    4. It would pay for 2 year community college for everyone.
    5. Because it accepted everyone and was free
    6. He could get stuff out of the way before he had to pay a lot of money and his credits transferred over.
    7. So the kids who can’t afford a state university can get an education.
    8. if they are already paying for low income students to go to college then why would they pay for people who could afford it themselves with the help of grants and students.
    9. Community colleges would take on the same draw backs as public schools. Many programs will be kicked because the government is too busy paying for somebody else to keep programs. If you start to spoon feed children then they will expect life to be free. Why are we trying to get students to get jobs and pay for themselves if the government will do it for them? This is the exact reason why our country is in so much debt because the federal government loves to throw money around to people who don’t actually need it and the people who do need it don’t get what they need because everybody is holding out their hand because “it’s not fair”.

8)I think that while it is a great idea it isn't realistic while the U.S has so much debt we shouldn't spend money on that kind of thing. If someone wants to go to collage bad enough they will work hard to get scholarships and take out loans.
    9) Yes. Public school have to accommodate for people who are slower learners when at a collage or community collage they go at one pace and you have to keep up because thats just collage.

1.) President Obama chooses Tennessee because it is the leading state in the movement to provide everyone with the chance of two free years of community college.
2.) Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at Wisconsin and is a large proponent of Obama's plan; Sandy Baum is an author/educator who is skeptical about Obama's plan.
3.) Government spending already has budgeting issues and making the community colleges free would allocate even more billions of dollars towards the colleges.
4.) The plan would allow the middle class students applying for the Pell Grant to keep their money and have it circulate more in the economy.

5.) Tom Hanks went to Chabot because it was free and that was all he could make it in to.
6.) Tom Hanks said that the free college allowed him not to worry about the fees but instead get the experience he normally would and got educated from teachers on classes that changed his life.
7.) Hanks thinks that community college is important for many Americans because it will slowly transition them into the real world and change most of their lives for the better as it DoD his.

8.) I like the idea of free community college; I've always worried that even with a great gpa, my act scores would be inadequate for any relevant college, so to have the free 2-year community college tuition as a worst-case-scenario backup plan would be great. If the government has the funds to support such a bold movement, I'm all for it.
9.) In my opinion, no, the community colleges would have a ton of new students obviously, but a lot of people would be fed up with school and would rather go straight into the workforce or military as is already a common occurrence.

The government doesn't have any authority over how much community colleges charge for tuition

    7. It can improve their employment and pay checks. Also, they can use those credits from the community college and move on to a University.
    8. I think the government should provide money to the middle class to attend a two- year college and some type of programs to not spend as much money they already have.
    9. Not exactly.. If the education provided is free, then the students should be able to pay for SOMETHING, such as books. Public schools make you pay for everything.

    3. It could become free for people who could afford it and it is also wrong to distribute the already low funds when some that can afford college can no longer afford living expenses.

    7. He thinks that it is important because it can keep students right out of high school from getting into loan debts and can also help people that want to return have an easy step back into college.
    8. I agree that college should be tuition free and that the government should spend more money on paying for students to attend college. If we want to better our country that requires bettering the people and furthering their education and many people with great potential cannot go to college because they cannot afford to attend college.
    9. Not necessarily, you do not have to attend school after high school so it will only be the ones wanting to further their education attending.

    3. People who can afford college will take advantage of the free tuition when the ones who need it most will not be able to get it. People see the benefits but are not sure if it can be afforded in the end.
    4. The middle class would be able to easily afford college and not have to take things such as loans.
    5. He says that he went to Chabot Community College ecause he did not have the money to afford college, which this college was free, and because his SAT scores were not good enough to get into others.

    8. I believe certain people do need a chance at a free education but I also believe certain people who can afford it should not. Only the people that need it should be able to get it.
    9. Yes, i believe they will. Many people will take advantage of this opportunity and after a while it will become something everyone has and not an opportunity and a way to progress in life. It will become unimportant and taken for granted.

  24. 1. Why did President Obama choose Tennessee as the place to promote his community college plan?
Tennessee was the only state to secure Americas future with a free community college option.
    2. Who is Sara Goldrick-Rab? Who is Sandy Baum? How do each of these women feel about the President's plan?
Sara is a professor at the University of Wisconsin. Sara is an educator who spent most of her time studying college costs. Sara feels that this is something we really need right now while Sandy thinks people that can afford it shouldn't get in for free.
    3. What are some of the drawbacks (PLURAL!) of the government funding community college?
Federal government is already spending $50 mil to $60 mil on Pell Grants that help pay for college. The gov. has no say so in how much a community college charge.
    4. How would the plan impact the middle class?
Tuition and cost is out of reach for middle class and income students and some are not able to get Pell Grants.
Answer the following questions based on article two:

    5. Why does Tom Hanks say that he went to Chabot Community College?
It accepted everyone and it was free.
    6. How does he say that it bridged the gap between high school and the State University for him?
He was an under achiever in high school with lousy ACT scores.
    7. Why does he think that community college is important for the current generation of Americans?
He said it can improve employment and pay checks and also can use credits from a community college to go to a University
Answer the following questions based on your now-informed-opinion:

    8. On what side do you stand of the community-college debate? Should the government spend more money than it is already spending to pay for millions of students to attend community college for free?
I dont think community college should be free. But it shouldn't be AS MUCH. They should reduce many "uncalled for" debts. The government should spend more money because in the end, the have money and the students who want to go but can't go does not.
    9. If this were to happen, would community colleges take on the same drawbacks and problems as public schools?
Yes, the only thing a public school has problems with is maybe lunch money and to buy certain books you may need for a class. Also, the smarter you are, you have to pay for those AP classes you want to take.

    2. Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin and she supports free community whereas Sandy Baum, an author and educator, is skeptic claiming that community college is already affordable and free for low income students.
    3. The government would have to allocate scarce funds and people who can afford community college will not have to pay for something they are capable of paying for.
    4. The middle class will have increased political support.
    5. Tom Hanks said that he had lousy SAT scores and the community college in Hayward, Califirnia was the only school that was accept him because it accepted anyone and tuition was free.
    6. It gave him the education credits he didn't get in high school to go the state university.
    7. Hanks says that community college will redefine the work they do in life. Without community college, he says he would not be where he is today.
    8. If community college becomes free, students will not work as hard in high school to get a higher education if they can just attend a community college for free.
    9. Absolutely because community college will be just like transferring to a different high school, and will be taken for granted just like some students do high school. Also school funding will be just as difficult as it is in high school.

Tennessee is the only state that offers free two-years of tuition.
Sara is a professor at the University of Wisconsin and she agrees with Obama 100%. Sandy is an author who is more skeptical of the idea.
some drawbacks are reallocating money away from subsidized housing, welfare, and other public works, free tuition doesn't always work like with HOPE in Georgia, and people wouldn't do their best in college because they know its free.
This would affect the middle class because it would take money away from pell grants and other grants for people who don't want to or cant go to community college but instead a state or private 4-year institution.
Tom Hanks went to Chabot college because he had lousy SAT scores and it was free and the only place he could get accepted.
It allowed him to get college credits for free and allowed him to increase his grades and look better for prospective colleges.
He thinks community college is important because it is a stepping stone for students who might not be smart enough for a 4-year school or it could be a place to improve grades to look better for a 4-year school.
I don't think the government should subsidize college tuition because the government already pays for too much and there are plenty of scholarships out there for people willing to put forth the effort.
Yes, community colleges would begin to lack sufficient funds much like public high schools now cannot afford new text books most of the time.

    2) Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at Wisconsin, Madison; Sandy Baum is author and educator who studies trends of college cost. Sara feels that is is the right thing to do whereas Sandy is skeptical.
    3) First, government has no say in how much tuition communities colleges charge. Second, community colleges in most states are affordable for the low income students.
    4) The middle class families would get broad political support. That the money spent on Pell Grants would subsidize the tuition-free plans in the country.
    5) That is excepted everyone and was free.
    6) That his credits in college would transfer to the university of his preference.
    7) Because of the troops, single parents who need lower obstacles to get them back into a good paying job. Also, good for high school graduates who can't get an higher education because of restrictions (parents aren't able to pay).
    8) I feel that community college should be free. I definitely don't think they should spend more money but have a way to balance it all out between the community colleges ( I know that will be extremely difficult); but if there is a will there is a way.
    9) Of course they would because of the restrictions they will have on money spending within the school. They will definitely be major drawbacks because they are worried about the future for the school; will it still be open and running if Obama made community college free.

    1. He chose Tennessee because Tennessee already supports his community college plan.
    2. Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Sandy Baum is an author and educator who has studied college costs. Goldrick-Rab thinks the community college plan is a great idea, Baum is questionable about the plan and does not understand how the government will afford it.
    3. Some drawbacks are the fact that the government has no control over how much each community college charges, another one is that community colleges are already affordable and free for low income students so it does not really cause any change. People think that there is nothing wrong with trying to make community college free but since it is already low in cost, why waste the little funds we have.
    4. This plan would definitely impact the middle class in a positive way. The middle class already struggles to pay for colleges because they get no support because they are not considered low income, they are just stuck in the middle. So having the middle class get free community college would get a lot of political support.
    5. He went to Chabot because they accepted everyone and because it was free.
    6. Chabot offered classes that would count as credits that he could transfer over to a State University which is why it is considered the bridge between high school and the State University.
    7. It gives people a chance at a brighter future. Some people do not have the money to go on to a college after high school and with a two-year community college program, they would be able to further their education.
    8. I do not think that they should make community college free. As the article said, community college is already free for people with low income and moderately cheap for all others. Why should we waste money that our government does not have, on something that is unnecessary and could possibly cause major issues?
    9. I do think that community college would take on the same drawbacks as public schools do. Public schools get taken for granted and the students at most public schools don't care as much for their education or how they got to where they are. If the government was to make community college free, the college students would begin to care less since they aren't wasting their money by not trying or doing anything. Some would go to college just to say they went to college and not try whatsoever. There are always goods and bads to ideas like these. The good is that more people would be able to further their education. The bad is that people could take advantage of the system and not try and end up wasting government funds that could have been put to good use elsewhere.

It is hard to finally be done with high school and then go straight into college and if they are wanting to do this and are serious about it then they should have the opportunity to do so. If you cannot afford to pay for college you should not be left out and have to give up that all because you cannot pay.

1.) Because this plan is already implemented in Tennessee.
2.) Sara Goldrick-Rab is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. & Sandy Baum is an author and educator. Sara completely agrees with the plan but Sandy is a skeptic, arguing that the Government doesn't know the tuition cost of some Community colleges and that it's already free to most low income students.
3.) A couple drawbacks are that the government already pays $50-$60 Billion a year on Pell grants and they would add even more than that to pay for tuition for colleges. Then the government would also have to reallocate funds.
4.) Baum says the plan would win broad political support for the middle class because they hardly have to money to pay for college tuition but with a little help, they do. So if they made it free, it would help that much more.
5.) Because it was nearby and affordable.
6.) Tom Hanks said it bridged the gap by allowing him to take his core courses and also classes he enjoyed to take.
7.) Tom says it is important because we have Veterans that need to have a higher level education to succeed when they return home, same with workers, too-new-to-be parents, single parents. Too many people that could be benefitted by this would be hurt if we did not get behind this.
8.) I think there are several upsides to this but, I also think allowing so many is not the best idea. I think students should have to apply to the college and the college itself would have to choose the best or the people they like and believe would make the most of this opportunity to attend the college for free.
9.) Im not sure, it seems plausible but, I think only the event itself and the resulting actions would determine whether or not they faced the same drawbacks.

Pres Obama chooses Tennessee as the place to promote his community college plan because Tennessee is the leading state and the only state that has accomplished the community college tuition-free.
Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a supporter of the community college plan. She was also co-authored to a study about free two-year college option a previous year. Sandy Buam is a skeptic who is disagreeing and against the college plan. She is also an author and educator who has spent years studying the trends in college costs. Goldrick-Rab and Buam perspectives are completely different. Goldrick-Rab is supporting the plan while Buam is against it. Goldrick-Rab believes that the plan is perfect for students who can’t afford to go to college and the middle class while Buam believes that the federal government has no say in how much tuition community colleges charge and that she’s concerned about making it free for people who can afford to go.
Some of the drawbacks are 1. allocating people’s scare funds 2. giving money for students to go to community colleges is not such a good idea 3. community colleges in most states are pretty affordable and already free for low income students.
The middle class would have a impact on the plan with financial support because the tuition and costs for middle class is out for reach and they can barely afford to go to community colleges. With this plan, it will makes it easier for them and help them out in so many ways plus providing free community college to middle-income families would get broad political support.
Tom Hanks says that he went to Chabot Community College because he wants people to understand how community college tuition-free helped in his career and let him able to fulfilled his dreams and future. Chabot Community Colleges gave him many classes that taught him how to performed in his career so he wants to show people that without the help from Chabot, he wouldn’t be what/who he is right now.
It bridged the gap between high school and the State University by letting him go to community college for free. After high school, he applies for college with not so great SAT scores so he figured not so many colleges would take him so he applied for Chabot, the college that accepted everyone and was free. After attending Chabot, it allows him to go to State University because he got some credits and education from Chabot already.
Hanks thinks that community college is important for the current generation of Americans because community college students would not have such a major financial problem taking on big loans. It is also important because people who have working problems can go to community college and come out with a higher education that can get them better jobs than the ones they had before.
I am on Goldrick-Rab’s side. I believe that the government should spent more money for students to attend community college for free because not everyone can afford to go to college. Students don’t go to college for fun but for education purpose. They should be able to go college to learn and not have to worry that financial problem is coming their ways and that they might have to drop-out because they can’t afford to stay even on loans.
Community colleges might take on the same drawbacks and problems as public schools but I believe they should be taking risks and take on the community college tuition-free plan.

    6. It gave him a head start on college.

Many may take the easy way out and go to community college for two years instead of a University even if they could afford it and had the grades. If so, this would give those students a slow start instead of a head start. Go Pats!

    9. I think this all depends on the students that attend. If you have students that just goof around and don't really give a crap about school, then yeah, community college will then be seen as a trashy public school. 8.Yes. Education needs to be free tto those who need it. Affordability should not inhibit someone's ability to get and education and potentially a job to help the community.
    9. Maybe so, however a mediocre education is better than no education. Other countries have free education and they thrive fine.

    4. More middle-class students cold afford to go top college.
    5. They accepted everyone and it was free.
    6. He could get his prerequisites out of the way.
    7. It's important because today's students are very diverse- single parents, vets, and the more traditional high school graduates- and they need a more accessible plan for their education.
    8. I think the plan should be treated with caution because there are other options. They could expand the requisites for the Pell Grant and allow more middle class people to get federal aid for their tuition. There are other ways to reallocate these funds.
    9. My concern is that with federal funding, community colleges would become an extension of public school and part of the reason I want to go to college is so that I can get away from public school so that other people can stop messing with my curriculum.

    8. Community colleges should be funded governmentally, and by doing so, would provide underprivileged teens to gain an education for a lower cost than public university.
    9. Not necessarily, an education is an education no matter how you spin it. However, if a person works hard enough, they should be given an opportunity for higher learning at a higher level.
