ReplyDeletePeter Lanza came out publicly about his thoughts on his son who was the shooter
in the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre. Lanza mentions how his son would have shot him also if he had the chance. Lanza also tells about his son's Aspergers disorder, and how it did not make him violent. The Lanza family new Adam was weird and an outcast, but they did not know he could be this violent. Peter talked with two of the victim's families and one family forgave Adam. This
article helps the nation and, more specifically, the victim's family understand more about there children's killer. It also helps take the blame from Peter Lanza himself.

ReplyDeleteOne moment Monday morning, a Ukrainian flag still was flying over a military base in Ukraine's Crimea region (the base's commander reportedly kidnapped by pro-Russian troops the day before). Later Monday, masked troops were at the base, and the Ukrainian flag was gone. The bloodless incursion by apparently pro-Russian forces onto the Ukrainian base in the city of Bakhchisaray (amid disputed accounts over whether the base commander had switched sides) was one of the latest encounters between pro-Moscow troops who are consolidating their hold on the Black Sea peninsula and Ukrainian forces who still are there. The incident at the base came a day after German Chancellor Angela Merkel bluntly told Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone the Moscow-backed referendum on whether Crimea should join Russia is illegal and would violate Ukraine's constitution if it goes ahead on March 16. Legal or not, Crimean referendum will shape Ukraine crisis. Putin has defended breakaway moves by pro-Russian leaders in Crimea, where Russian forces have been tightening their grip on a region that has been the epicenter of a battle for influence among Moscow, Kiev and the West since Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's ouster last month. Pro-Russian forces last week pushed into the autonomous region in a bloodless siege, prompting criticism from Western nations and Ukraine's interim government.

ReplyDeleteIn recent years there has been controversy over the ideas the original Barbie doll represents. Barbie depicts a woman in her prime, though in reality achieving the same body shape as the doll is virtually impossible. As a result, some young teenage girls consider their own body shape undesirable, thinking that Barbie's body proportions are the only ones accepted in society. Due to the inaccuracy of Barbie when it comes to the average young woman, artist Nickolay Lamm has proposed a new doll named Lammily. Lammily is a brunette with elbows and knees that can bend. She will depict the actual average body type of a 19- year old woman. Lamm's new doll will exhibit an active lifestyle for an average young woman. Lamm is pushing to get the Lammily doll in stores as soon as he can. He has held fundraising events for his effort, hoping to raise at least $95,000. After only 5 days, Lamm has raised a grand total of $371,386. Through his efforts, Lamm's new doll will hopefully promote a healthier body image for current and future generations of young girls.

ReplyDeleteThe polar blast is spreading across the United States. Snow is breaking records. The National Weather Service expects the temperature to drop to 30 to 50 degrees below average in some cities. For example, in some places, such as Nashville Tennessee, it will be colder than it is in some parts of Alaska. This weather is creating a heavy burden for traveler because many flights are being canceled, many are warned not to drive unless there is an emergency. Also, many cities are opening facilities for residents who need warmth. The police are doing a reverse 911 system in which they call residents to make sure they are okay, and if they do not answer, then they go check on them. Thirteen people have died due to this weather, but this weather is expected to last for only three days.
This week, I will be talking about new technology and how thousands of people are using it to capitalize on the search for the missing American plane. The plane was last heard from right off the coast of Thailand yesterday. The plane and its 239 members have not been seen since. Common people are now taking the initiative to find the missing ship. Through the company "Tommond," any person with a computer can log on and search through the satellite images of the Thailand coast. Over half a million people have joined the search effort. Although no evidence of the plane has been found yet, progress is being made. The website crashed yesterday from having too many users, which is considered by most to be a good problem. This new technology and massive search effort could possibly lead to the location of the plane and the safety of its passengers. With continued improvements like this, there are endless possibilities on how strangers on opposite sides of the globe can help each other

ReplyDeleteOn March 8th, a Malaysia Airlines jet went missing over Southeast Asia with 239 passengers on board. All contact with this jet was lost right around its airspace. The jet was on an over night flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, yet there were no signs of danger or any bad weather before the flight took off. The search is still going on and some believe a microburst or wind shear crashed the plane. The jet that disappeared Saturday was somewhere over the South China Sea, and was believed to be around the Vietnam airspace.

It’s a mystery because the Malaysia airline flight MH370 disappeared Saturday with 239 passengers and crew en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Among the airplane, there were 227 passengers and 12 crew members. The last contact that was made was at the boundary between Malaysian and Vietnamese airspace. The last words between the pilot and the air control were “all right, roger that”. Khalid Abu Bakar, Inspector General of Police, said they were looking into four areas for the reason of the missing plane that includes hijacking, sabotage, psychological problems among the passengers and crew, and personal problems among the passengers and crew. The most current event going on the in the world right now is the currently missing Malaysian aircraft. Flight 370 has been missing for over 5 days now and how this event came to pass is still unclear. So far sources have gathered that 3 men, the main one named Kazem Ali, purchased 3 different tickets ffor different destinations but on the same plane with stolen passports. Also when the plane took off from the Kuala Lumpur airport, an airport tower outside of Kuala Lumpur reported that they had lost contact with the craft. It is also known that the craft was a Boeing 777-200, and it was carrying 239 people and the pilot is a trained professional. IT is suspected that the transponder was either turned off or it stopped working 45 minutes after take off, thus the loss of connection. The Malaysian Air force is still trying to locate the aircraft and figure out what possibly could have happen to it and its passengers.~Azeeza Abdulrauf~

South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend in his home.For this crime, Pistorius will only be faced with a judge instead of attending a jury trial. I know you're wondering why. This is because South Africa abolished jury trials in 1969 due to fears of racial prejudice. Pistorius will be sentenced with 25 years if he is accused with premeditated murder. If he is not found guilt of premeditated murder then he will still face culpable homicide. Some ask if he will get special treatment because he was apart of the Olympics but that is not true. He will not have special treatment. But on his bail last year he received special treatment with more visiting hours. The conflict with this article is that an Olympian should represent their honor and pride of their nation but this could degrade the representation of the future Olympian. The only thing that influences or degrades the subject is that if the judge is biased with his performance in the Olympics.

In Michigan, the McDonald's has cut workers' wages illegally low for new uniforms, and the average low-wage worker loses $2,600 every year due to illegal wage theft from McDonald's.

ReplyDeleteThis article explains the background of the Russian navy. The navy was established in the late 18th century when Russia finally gained control over Crimea. The irony is that now, Russia and Ukraine may go into a military dispute over Crimea, using their naval branch. Russia's navy is fairly strong, but it has no real need by the country. It is a "prized possession" of Russia and has been key to winning a fair amount of battles.
The main importance of the article is its relation to the current dispute between Russia, Crimea, Ukraine, and the other countries their dispute is affecting.

ReplyDeleteIn Austin,Texas a national story made headlines in the New York Times. A driver who police believe have been intoxicated killed and injured people, after running into a festival. The driver was apparently stopped by a police after leaving a club, and all of sudden sped off driving into a one lane causing the whole traumatic event. The major issue at hand is should this driver be brought up on murder charges? Was alcohol a factor? The police believe the individual who committed the crime had no regard for anyone. Flight MH370 goes missing on its way to Beijing with over 200 passengers on board. Two men aboard the plane were traveling with stolen passports, but have no links to be involved in any terrorist groups.Reports state that the flight veered off course and disappeared an hour after take off. They are now searching a wider area of where the aircraft could be and are investigating any possible clues to find the plane.

U.S officials believe that the missing Malaysian plane may have flown a few more hours after it last contacted Malaysian air control. Officials believe the plane flew over the Indian Ocean. No one knows where the plane went or if it crashed. To search for the plane searchers have to cover a very large area to search for the plane. There is no known lead on where the plane is.

The current rules for overtime have led to many workers not getting paid the money they deserve for overtime. On March 12, 2014, Obama signed a presidential memorandum directing the Labor Department to revise the overtime rules so that people can actually be paid for their extra work. The change in the rule is targeted for the people who make more that $455 a week and for those who have been exempt from the rule because some of their work is designated as management even though their duties are minimal. The national ramifications could go both ways. On one hand, it could benefit the millions of workers living under the poverty line, but on the other it could also place a heavy burden on businesses and hurt the economy even more. This is Obama’s second proposal to help pay the average worker, the previous being his request to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has been missing since Saturday, 3/8/14. It is a mystery because officials have no idea where the plane has gone.
Analysts from U.S. intelligence, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have concluded that pings sent to a satellite hours after the plane's last transponder signal likely came from the missing aircraft, the senior U.S. official said.
"It appears the plane was flying most of that time," the senior U.S. official said. The "indication" that the plane kept flying is not based on U.S. government information but rather based on radar readings and plane data.
There is reason to believe the plane flew for four hours, the officials said, but there is no specific indication where the plane actually is.
"There is probably a significant likelihood" that the aircraft is now on the bottom of the Indian Ocean, the official said, citing information Malaysia has shared with the United States.
There is also speculation that the plane was a deliberate act “ citing the network said two separate communications systems on the missing aircraft were shut down separately, 14 minutes apart.”
The wait of the news of loved ones is unbearable. The more time passes the more difficult it will be to track down the location of the plane.
There was a Flight that vanished recently. They believe that two Iranians with fake passports boarded the plane and then stole it. They shut off the all the electronics that could help identify where the plane might be. The Chinese government is using satellites trying to find the plane. ReplyDeleteMalaysian Airlines Flight 370 had been missing for six days off the coast of Kalua Lampur; Maylasia. The whereabouts of this flight and it's 239 passengers is completely unknown. According to U.S. Officials, the lame may have flown for hundreds of miles more than previously thought before it made it's descent. Terrorism is still a theory as to what happened to the flight and it's passengers. With this new knowledge, the plane's search area must expand greatly in hopes of finding it. It's reported that the plane would have been able to reach Pakistan, the Indian Ocean, or the Arabian Sea if that was it's goal. Investigators are looking into the possibility that the flight may have been taken somewhere "for later use." Or maybe they just went back to the island....

The Malaysia Airline flight 370 went missing on Saturday March 8, 2014. It was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. the airlines was located in southeast Asia. The authorities are baffled by the lack of information they are finding. The US is helping the Malaysia government in the search for the plane. there have been many theories thrown out there but none are true. There is one theory that the plane flew for four more hours after the last "ping" of information of its whereabouts . This brings the search to the Indian ocean. the Big Thing is that the planes Emergency Locator Transmitters were deactivated. They do not know if it was mechanical problems, hijacking or did the plane have some other use. The US and Malaysian government can only suspect that the 239 passenger and the plane are at the bottom of the ocean somewhere. There was discovery of satellite images that showed debris of the plane. This was a beacon of hope for some of the family member of the passengers. Later on Chinese officials have debunked the images as not relating to the missing plane. The search is still on after six days from the initial disappearance.

Recently, Malaysia Airline 370 has gone missing. Some believe that it has now landed and possibly sank to the bottom of the Indian Ocean after its last signals were sent. The USS Kidd is being sent to start a search in the Indian Ocean for the airline. Many theories that have been suggested are being shot down by others as new facts come into play.

ReplyDeleteMark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, vocalized his feelings about the NSA (National Security Agency) and their ability to change the security of the Internet. He made a call to President Obama Wednesday to inform him of his feelings about the issue. Zuckerberg feels that the government is putting people in danger by weakening the security of the Internet. The NSA states that they will not abuse their authority and they will only use their abilities when they have the legal authority to do so. If Internet security is weakened, the government will not need legal authority to see certain things because it will already be out there for anyone to see. The security being weakened can be dangerous for many and Zuckerberg does not think President Obama will be reforming this issue anytime soon. Global ramifications are unsafe Internet conditions which could lead to a variety of crimes.

ReplyDeleteFor weeks now, there have been many protests in Venezuela against President Nicolas Maduro. Anti-government protesters are mainly students, unhappy with the economy and rising crime, and they've been clashing since February 12th with security forces and pro-government groups. Protesters have built barricades blocking the roads in many of the main cities of Venezuela. Since the beginning of the riots, at least 25 people on both sides have died, over 300 people have been injured, and approximately 1300 people have been arrested. The president urged both pro-government and opposition student groups to engage in a peace conference scheduled for today, but in the last month opponents of the government have shown little interest for negotiations, boycotting other scheduled peace talks. Opposition mayors demanded the release of demonstrator, to lower crime, to end food shortages, and to allow opposition figure to deliver an official announcement.

ReplyDeleteApproximately one week ago a Malaysian flight with 239 people boarded; however, they lost contact with the world and there is now a large search mission to find them. According to U.S. officials satellites received signals from the plane. Apparently, Boeing gets satellite signals for maintenance and although Malaysia Airlines does not have this service, they still have access to the satellites. Because the plane has been missing for so long Malaysia has expanded their search and is enlisting India to help them search. The plane allegedly had enough gas to keep flying for four hours.

ReplyDeleteIn Birmingham, Alabama, the police chief is being accused by an atheist group of abusing his political power. The atheist group feels as if the chief should stop the prayer walks from happening. The group is accusing the chief of abusing the constitutions separation of church and state by promoting Christianity. This group has requested full records regarding the chiefs involvement in the prayer walks. The atheist group intends on having these prayer walks put to an end for they feel as if it goes against the constitution.

ReplyDeleteOn Wednesday, March 12, 2014, there was an explosion on the East Harlem block in Manhattan, New York. Eight people were killed and many more were injured. they found all eight of the bodies by Thursday, March 13th. The explosion took down 2 five story buildings, including a piano store where a man working said he "heard a thunderous blast that sent pianos hurling into the air." It also tore apart apartment buildings and an Evangelical church. Authorities are not sure how the explosion started except for one rumor of a gas leak. In one of the buildings there had been violations of "lack of smoke detectors, blocked fire escapes and faulty light fixtures," which could prove the rumor of a gas leak to be true. The authorities have called for further investigation of the case.

My current event is about a deadly stabbing that occurred in Changsha City, the capital of the Hunan Province in Central China. This event occurred Friday morning around 10:15. he argument broke out in a market between two vendors and quickly escalated. Not only the people in the argument were stabbed, but also 4 innocent bystanders, totaling at 5 people stabbed to death. One of the bystanders was stabbed after attempting to calm the situation. One of the dead is presumed to be the lead suspect. When the enraged suspect would not calm down, the police shot him down. this totals 6 people dead. This is the second deadly stabbing that China has experienced in the last month.

This article goes into to a description of something that sounds like it comes right of a sci-fi show. A major federal study has been conducted by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission says "coordinated attack on just nine of the United States’ 55,000 electric-transmission substations on the right day could cause a blackout from Los Angeles to New York City". The whole country could be in the dark for days. One document found by the Journal said that an attack that was precisely synchronized even if small could possibly put the US in a "literal Dark Age."At this time there are NO security measures for substations unless they are at nuclear power planets. Thinking back to when our power in Tuscaloosa was only out for a small amount of time due to the tornadoes, I can only imagine the chaos that would happen across the whole country. We depend too much on tv, radio, phone and internet to communicate. It would be mass confusion and craziness. They need to get those security settings in place so they country can't be impaired instantaneously.

19 year old Darion Aguilar adorned himself in garb similar to that of the Columbine shooters of 1999. Armed with "weapon[s], attire, [a] backpack containing explosives and [a] method of suicide [were all] similar to those used in the Columbine incident", Aguilar's attempt rendered two fatally wounded and one injured before taking his own life upon apprehension. Aguilar made post to Tumblr, a social media outlet, about his plans several hours prior to his slaughter, which was eventually deactivated. His photo, however, is not being released in order to prevent a sense of "notoriety" often felt amongst copy-cat offenders.
The issue of mental illness, as similarly assumed in the case of the Columbine incident, was factored into the events leading up to the incident. Aguilar sought help, however, he was declined in his efforts to receive clinical help. He claimed to hear voices that were assumed by his physician to be "non-violent".
On a national scope, this event serves to prove that the past is relevant; if this nation intends to make the same minuscule amount progress it has, things like this are bound to happen again. In addition, this event also raises the abstraction and obfuscation that surround certain aspects of mental illness and its effect on society.

ReplyDeleteOn March 12, 2014, there was a gas explosion in East Harlem in New York. More than ten fire trucks arrived at the catastrophic site to battle the fire that broke out around 9:30 a.m. It caused two buildings to collapse and killed at least eight people. This explosion sent thick clouds of smoke into the sky, and sent many people running to avoid it. Metro-North service was halted in both directions following the incident. Various trains were running at slow speeds because of concern about "vibrations" from the collapse.

This past week a Malaysian Airplane mysteriously vanished somewhere over the Indian Ocean. There are a multitude of possibilities as to why and how this could have happened. It could be terrorist that hijacked it and or blew it up. It could have landed somewhere, and could of even just crashed in the ocean. There is much mystery and many unanswered questions regarding flight 370. Investigators from the United States are almost convinced that this accident was no accident. A search has been underway since Saturday, when the plain disappeared. The missing planes strange disappearance has many new conspiracy theories sparked and has left many people with unanswered questions.

On March 15th a US drone was downed over Crimea and landed into Russian State arms and technology group hands. The drone was armed and belonged to the 66th US Reconnaissance brigade. It landed near the Crimean port of Sevastopol where the Russian black fleet is stationed and they supposedly have radar detection technology. Crimea is to hold a meeting on Sunday where they join Russia which the US says is illegal.

There was an issue recently in the Malaysia 370 flight situation where two people reportedly boarded with stolen passports. The significance of this happening at an airport is that, fifty percent of transborder passenger movements take place at airports so airport security is important. Treatment and procedures of airlines are dependent on which airport a person is at. A lot of travel documents are now digitized but those that aren't are not being checked against international databases. With biometric protection it is possible to tamper with conventional passports causing a security issue. The United States, United Kingdom, and the Arab Emirates are the biggest users of the interpol database for stolen travel documents. The United States requires airlines to travel documents to enter and leave the United States territory. The EU seems to believe that individual privacy are civil and human rights. The United States rather, takes the position that it is of a national security concern. Diversity among security can create situations where things are missed or overlooked. In China, in this case, they did not require visas to be issued. Visas are used to prevent situations like the Malaysia 370 flight incident with stolen passports. Overall, nations with their own developed security databases should still check with existing international systems, to prevent cases of stolen or missing travel documents. Also to help prevent such situations there should be global standardized procedures, to avoid overlooked or missed information.

ReplyDeleteI chose this article because we as a great chance to show love to a group of people who have no clue what God's love is. Fred Phelps was the leader of Westboro Baptist Church. He has protested everything from soldiers funerals to the tornado in Tuscaloosa. He "believed" that "Hate was a Bible Value" as stated by his bumper sticker. He felt that if no one was mad at him, then he wasn't doing his job as a christian. Mr. Phelps had no clue what true love was and his views were more cult like than christian. Hopefully no one will stoop to his level and protest his funeral.
