When making an argument, you can choose one of three options in stating your opinion. You can either defend your opponent's argument (agree with them), challenge your opponent's argument (disagree with them), or qualify your opponent's argument (agree and disagree to an extent).
After watching this news story, I want you to qualify the university's actions and the students' actions. In other words, explain not only the situation, but also explain how both parties in the situation could be correct. THEN, defend or challenge either the university's or the students' opinion with an opinion of your own.
I agree and disagree with the universities actions. They were justified in considering expelling the students, but I don't agree with how they expect the students to walk around defenseless. Security is not always the tighest even on campus, so I think students should at least be able to carry pepper spray if mothing else. The students were probably scared, and so they did whatever would keep them the safest.

The news story is caught between was it okay to have the gun or that is a terrible action and they are not allowed at this school anymore. Both parties could be correct. Yes, maybe the students should be expelled for having a fire arm against the school rules but, if the student happened to have not had the gun, both of them could have been seriously injured or killed. In my opinion, I agree with having the gun available if needed. I would not way to take any chances of my friends or roommates staying in the dorms with me to be hurt. Although, this problem could have been prevented if they had better security. The criminal wouldn't have gotten through if they had increased their security with a sharper eye.
ReplyDelete-April McCool
I see how increasing security will help with keeping criminals out, BUT, they werent on the actual campus. If you look back at the artical, they were on school-owned aparments that weren't on the actual campus so increased campus security wouldn't have helped because they weren't on the actual campus.

At a university in Washington, two students are facing expulsion for possessing a gun, which is against the schools policy. I can understand the school, the students obviously broke a rule and there are consequences to breaking rules. However, when one looks at the entire situation , you can see the logical fallacies. The university's actions are an example of those zero tolerance rules that lack common sense. If we look at a scenario where the student did not pull a gun, someone would probably be seriously injured or killed and everyone would be wondering what could have been done to avoid the tragedy. The university is overreacting, no one was hurt, there was no property damage and the students didn't even really live on the campus.
ReplyDeleteMarie Doyle
I agree with you. Although, if the criminal was on the loose and people were looking for him the university shouldn't have even let him through. The university's security needs to be more influenced.

Two students are being faced with possible expulsion for pulling a gun on a covicted felon who tried to get in to their apartment. School policy states that you are not allowed to own/ be in the possession of a weapon such as a firearm on school property, or school housing. Was it right to use the weapon to DEFEND themselves? Yes, if it meant saving their own lives. Is it right for the University to CONSIDER expelling them? Yes, it was clearly stated in the school handbook and the school policy. The students were acting in defense. They were afraid that the felon would try to cause them harm, so he pulled a gun on him and he fled the area. In the fact that it was SELF-DEFENSE, the school is kind of overeacting. It's not like they drew the gun on another student.

ReplyDeleteThe story goes that two students are being oppressed with possible expulsion because they broke school policy. The school's policy expounded that students can't possess a firearm whether on campus or off in campus's housing. The university is in predicament since students need a form of protection, other than the security that drives around and however big the campus and surrounding buildings are the security isn't everywhere all the time. The students are in a quandary because if they hadn't of pulled the gun on the felon there could have been a robbery or shooting. Yet since they did pull out the firearm they are facing the chance of being expelled. The university could be more lenient since their security didn't prevent the situation by already letting the felon in and the building is school housing not on campus.

ReplyDeleteTwo seniors in Washington are waiting to see if they will be expelled for using a gun. The college students were in their room off campus (still owned by the school) when one of them opened the door to a stranger. The man asked for some money and the student politely said no. The man threatened the student but the roomate flashed a gun and the criminal took off running. The campus has a no gun policy and the boys had no right to break that rule. I can understand why the school feels the pressure to expell these students. If they let this one slide in the name of self-defence what will everyone else say? Altough the boys should not have broken the rule, because they did they remained safe. Security is provided at the complex but I think that it is silly not to allow the students any sort of self-defence item. All in all the boys should not have a gun on campus even if it is registered. I suggest adding peepholes to all of the doors so that students know who is on the other side of the door.

ReplyDeleteTwo seniors in college had an intruder come into their dorm which was off campus, one of the students pulls a gun on the intruder and he flees. The two students are up for expulsion because the college has a no gun policy and the students did break break that rule. Even though they did break a rule it was self-defense and if they arent allowed to have guns how are they supposed to defend themselves? I think its sorta absurd to expel them because they didnt shoot anyone they simpl defended themselves.
Marley i can understand where your coming from when you said you thought it was absurd for the college to expel the two students. However in my opinion I feel that the college is doing the right thing. Mainly because if they don't enforce this rule highly then whats keeping other students from breaking it. I will admit I would be pretty upset if this happened to me, but in all honesty I would actually be even more mad if they wouldn't have expelled me at all.

Two seniors at a college in Washington wanted to see if they would get get expelled by using a gun. They were in there dorm room of campus and they opened the door to a stranger. The stranger asked if he could have some money and the student said no. The other student showed the gun and the person took off running. The campus has a strict no gun policy and that boys should not have done that. Personally, I think that the two boys should not have had any weapon in their dorm room. If something bad happened to them they should have called security to their dorm.
ReplyDeleteMayson McGee
I disagee with this statement, saying that they should not have any weapon at all. I do believe that having the weapon on a no weapon policy ground is wrong. However, they did this to proctect their own lives. I do think they should get in some kind of trouble, but not expulsion. I think they should be alowwed to have some sort of weapon to proctect themselves if they feel in danger.
DeleteKalysa Garrett
I understand when you say that they went against the no gun policy and should be punished. However, expulsion could be taking it a little too far. This was just for protection for the students. Also, in this situation, there was no harm! If anything, the university went too far with this. I think they should be glad they do not have two people that were killed on campus.

ReplyDeleteTwo seniors were put on probation for pulling a gun after a guy came up to their dorm asking for money. I can understand why the students got in trouble. It is school policy that they shouldn't have weapons, but it was in self defense, and that is the only time you should pull out a gun. I think that students should be able to have guns, but background checks and various safety measures need to be taken to make sure these guns are in the right hand. It really all depends on who has the gun. Some people, like these college students, will only draw them if necessary. Others might go crazy and kill people.
Two seniors at a college in Washington had a stranger come to their dorm room. They opened the door and the stranger ask for money. He said no, because he didnt know him and wasnt comfortable with giving him cash. The other roomate come in and pulls out a gun and the stranger runs away. The two students get put on probaton for pulling a gun to defend against an intrder. I can understand why the two students got in trouble by breaking the rules, but aslo, i can see why they did break the rules. I personaly think that they shouldnt get expelled, because they were trying to defend themselves, and i thnk thats the only reason they should have a gun. But also there does need to be security for safety reasons.

Two seniors in Spokane, Washington were put on a indefinite probation at their college after a man came up to their door and asked for money and one of the students pulled a gun. I understand why the college administrators put the boys on probation. The campus does not allow firearms on its campus. The say that they have enough security to handle a situation if it is needed. The campus wants to keep the campus safe without the help of firearms. I also understand why the student pulled the gun. He felt that his life was in danger and also the life of his friend/roommate. He had the license, the papers needed, and the gun registration needed to own the gun safely. In my opinion the students had the right to pull the gun because his life, he felt, was in danger. He said in the video that if he could do it all over again he would because his life and the life of his roommate are more important than expulsion. I agree with that because as long as he felt the need and he had all the papers and everything he needed to own and use the gun legally than he had the right to pull his gun, even though it was against campus policy.
ReplyDelete-Jordan Tatum
I agree and disagree with the school's decision. I understand that it is against the rules for firearms on the campus but at the same time how else would they have defended themselves against a felon. Now if you don't allow firearms on campus then you should at least have security around each dorm just in case a situation like the one that just occurred happens. Now I do agree with the administration putting them on probation for having the firearms but there is no need to expell the students. No one was harmed with the gun it was all self defense to keep himself and his friends life out of harms way. I agree with lesser punishment than they got for the firearm.
ReplyDelete-Kionte Taggart
I understand how you think that the security should be around the dorms but in the video it said that they had a huge security force on campus. Though, I do agree with you that people should be able to defend themselves. I disagree with you about putting the students on probation because they should not even get in trouble for defending themselves.
Delete-Jordan Tatum
I agree with kionte I don't think that the students should have been expelled for defending themselves. If the school didn't with students to have a gun on campus they should have had better security. If the students didn't pull the gun out more than likely one of the students would have been hurt. I believe if one of the students would have been their parents had the right to sue the college. If the students would have called the police they wouldn't have been there in time to save, the students. I really don't think that the students should have been punished at all

ReplyDeleteTwo guys in living in a college dorm room, (obviously have been attending the school) were approached by a male who literally just got out of jail. In their own home. With their Taylor Swift poster. Although weapons were prohibited at the school, it even said in the video that McIntire had the gun with permission and it was legal. It was most likely for self defense, and I can totally understand that. And he used it for SELF DEFENSE. He felt he was in danger, so he wasn't just going to stand there when he had a gun. I can totally understand that the school is angry about the whole gun situation, but come on. Would you rather have two of your about to graduate students robbed and maybe even hurt rather than them not protecting themselves? I think the students SHOULD get punished in some way, but not expulsion.
I agree with Andrea(for once)! Yes the students did not obey campus rules but they acted in the name of self-defence. If the school wants to have a no gun policy they should have an enviroment that which students can feel safe. If the students did not feel the need to have the gun I'm sure it would not have been there.
Delete~Taylor Burge
I agree with Andrea and understand what she is saying and that the students should get punished but not expelled because they did not even pull the trigger and they used it for self defense. Also love the Taylor Swift poster. What if those students were injured or even killed if they did not have their gun, what would that college do then? So I totally agree with what Andrea said because expulsion is too big of a punishment and the gun was even legal. Also I would be super scared if a random man I do not know come to my door and ask for money, I would want to protect myself.
DeleteJane Frances Armour
I think the students shouldn't get punished because they just made a perfect example of why they should be able to have a gun in their on campus/ off campus apartment in case something like that were to happen. I think this should be an eye opener for the school Gonzaga.

DeleteLet's pretend I don't agree with you. I understand that you believe the gun was used in self-defense and the students shouldn't be expelled for that. But there is a risk that the gun is not always going to be used as self-defense. So is a zero-tolerance plan better than letting all students roam with a gun? The zero-tolerance plan could be used if it was supplied with sufficient security. Then again all students could frolic the campus with a gun or firearm. Your choices are somewhat safety or no state of safety at all. I say there might be no safety at all because whatever happens is determined by the student holding the gun or firearm.
The university want's to expel two students because they have a no weapons policy in campus housing and one of them pulled his gun out when an intruder tried to break into their house.
ReplyDeleteAround ten thirty at night a homeless man came to the students home asking for money. They told him he could have some food and a blanket, but not any money. This made him made for some reason and he went to grab something out of his back pocket so one of the room mates drew his gun on the guy. The students say they don' t regret what they did at all. The one that drew on the man says he would rather be suspended than dead.
I am completely on the students side. I mean yes they shouldn't of had a gun on campus, but it practically saved their lives. Who knows what that homeless man could of had in his back pocket. I think they did the right thing they should of done in that situation.

ReplyDeleteA man who was just out of jail showed up at two university students dorm. He claimed to be homeless and wanted money but when he was denied money he tried to force his way into the dorm. The students roommate pulled a gun on the man and he fled . The university has the right to expel them since it is school policy that you cannot have a gun on school property, however they should seriously rethink their policy. Believing that people should not carry firearms for self-defense because they have such good security is simply arrogant. While the students shouldn’t have had the gun to begin with they were in the right to act in self-defense.
The students actions were pulling a pistol on a known felon. The student was only tryin to protect himself and his roomate. The school whos policy is no guns on a students person or apartment isbtryin to protect the larger mass. In my opinion the collee should not expel the students. The pistol could have very well saved their lives.

Two college students were at home in their university apartment when a stranger,a felon, came to their door asking for money. They offered him food, and clothes but refused to give money. The man became more threatening until one of the students pulled a gun and he ran away. The university placed the two students on probation facing possible expulsion because of their no weapon policy. The university claimed to have plenty of security for their campus safety. The student owned the gun legally and had all the needed papers. He said he would do the same thing again because it could have been the reason they are still alive. I agree with the students' actions. They have a right to protect themselves and the gun was owned legally even though it was against school policy. If the campus was covered with plenty of security, they should have noticed the suspicious person. I think, the school should look at the students' records and take those into consideration before expelling them. In the future, they could investigate students and have the parents liable for their child when owning a gun. The students had a right to protect themselves..

Gonzaga University wants the expulsion of two students that broke campus rules of possessing a gun on campus grounds. A recently released convicted felon forced his way into their dorm room and demanded money. Fearing for their safety, one of the students presented a handgun and demanded the intruder to leave. I totally disagree with the schools decision about the incident. The students had all the rights in that situation to defend themselves. If the man would of barged in my house at night i would of drawn my gun, if he would of advanced on me i would of blown him away. The school should not allow students to carry the weapons on them, except when they are in their dorm rooms.
ReplyDeleteI understand what you are saying, but the schools rule is no guns on campus period. The dorm room in which the two students lived AND kept the weapon was owned by the school so they were technically breaking the rules. I personally think that the students should be able to keep a gun or any other weapon used for defense as long as they have the correct liscense for concealing a weapon. In conclusion to my statement, I believe that the college should either have more advanced security or allow the students to be able to own and keep a gun in the dorm just in case they have an intruder. The dorms should have been safer and not allowing the students to have weapons to defend themselves puts them at even more risk.

In the situation that a strange man came to a college students apartment, one student pulled a gun on them and they college might suspend them because they have no guns on campus rule. I understand that the college wants to keep everybody safe and that that is rule at the school and people need to follow the rules. I also understand that the college students felt like they were being threatened and that they have a right to keep themselves safe, he even owned the gun legally. I agree with the students reactions and what they did because if someone came to my door and tried to come in I would want to make them leave or at least have a way to protect myself especially if I am living without my parents. Also if the college campus has security and is safe then how did a convicted felon even come to their door? The students did do the right thing because that felon could have come in and hurt them or steal from them if they did not have a gun.

ReplyDeleteIn Spokane, Washington at Gonzaga university two students were place on probation after pulling a gun on an intruder. I agree with the students actions to think fast in the horrifying scene and pull out a gun in self defense, but I also can see how the university is correct considering it is against school policy to carry weapons on school campus. I agree with the students actions since the moment they used the gun was a time of serious matters. The two students were facing a strong six-time felon, for all we know they could be dead if they did not pull out the pistol. I disagree with the universities actions to put the two students on probation, thus attempting to expel the students from the school in their senior year. Even though having weapons on campus is against the rules, the university should let it pass with a warning this one time, considering in this case the gun may have been to the reason the two students our alive today.
In Gonzaga University, two students were facing expulsion because they pulled a gun out on an intruder. One can see how the University would want to expel them since they violated a very big rule. However, they only did this to defend themselves. I agreed with Dan when he said," Anybodys life is worth an expulsion." The university should be glad they're okay, and that nobody got hurt. Their way of punishment was a little extreme, and they could have taken it a little easier on them.

DeleteI completely agree with this statement. They only pulled a gun in self defense, therefore they shouldn't get a punishment as harsh as expulsion. It would be different if they were just walking around carelessly murdering people. The school should make an exception for this situation.

DeleteI agree completely with your statement of the two boys actions. The only way to two boys were to stay alive was to scare away their intruder, and they did just that only to be punished by the university. The points you made were completely correct in my opinion, anyone’s life is more important than expulsion.
The two Gonzaga University seniors are facing expulsion for pulling a gun on a intruder in their apartment. The reasons they are facing expulsion may be legitimate, but the students should have a right to be protected and feel safe. I can understand the university not wanting to have weapons on campus but the discipline taken upon these students is pure wrong and nothing short of idiotic. If the campus does not want the guns on the campus than they should offer a safer environment. Maybe a gun safety class should be provided for the students whom wish to carry a lethal weapon. In conclusion, the students had every right to have the weapons and the fact that they are being criticized and punished for it is sickening.
ReplyDelete~John Foster
John, I understand your thoughts about the students right to defend themselves, but I have to disagree. It is not "sickening" to punish students for blatantly breaking a rule. If you are attending a college, you are agreeing to follow those rules. People make rules for reasons (The Virginia Tech Massacre), and people who break them, even if they are "good" people are not exceptions. When people start thinking they are exceptions to rules terrible things happen. The best of example of this occurs in Crime and Punishment. The main character believes himself to be "above" the law and thinks it is okay for him to not follow it. I will not spoil it for you, but good things do not follow. Rules were never and will never be made for breaking.

The two students are facing epulsion for pulling a gun on an intruder that was in their apartment. The students have a right to protect themsleves, but the school also had a reason because they had a gun. So i agree and disagree. Casey Page
ReplyDelete2 guys in collae are waiting to see if they will be gone or no. They pulled a gun out on a intruder. ReplyDeleteI somewhat agree with you but still it could be really dangerous to have a gun in your room. Yeah it could be for protection, but what if the two roommates got into a huge argument and one of them got so mad that they wanted to shoot his roommate or kill himself. It could be used for bad instead of good so I go for more of the absolute no gun policy.
Delete-Mayson McGee
I agree with Paige's reasoning, the student did have the right to defend himself in the situation. but the college did have a no firearm possession on campus. but in the end the student could have died and the university should be more worried about there safety rather than what kind of fireaem they posses. nick sanders
ReplyDeleteKatie I understand where you're coming from completely . The students should receive a minor punishment, but nothing too harsh. The gun could have indeed have saved their lives. The school is trying to protect the students, but they really need to speak to the security to figure out how they let a felon onto those grounds.
ReplyDelete~Laura Coats
I agree with Paige the students did have a right to defend themselves. Also, I agree with the university because they did say that there are no weapons allowed on campus. But, like Paige I would have taken the students side because it was self defense.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said except the part about not telling the police. The boys should definitely tell the police about the weapons. You are not allowed to withhold information from the police. You have to be honest. If they do not think they were in the wrong then they should not have anything to hide. The police would find out anyway, when they eventually catch the intruder. Not telling the truth would be a bad idea, but I still agree with you on the rest of your statement.
ReplyDeleteThe students who brought weapons onto university property should legally be allowed to be expelled for breaking a school rule and should have voiced their incontent with the rules instead of just breaking them.
ReplyDeleteIf they were caught without it ever being necessary to use there probably wouldn't be as much support for them if they were just hiding a gun under their bed, but it was necessary and helped keep them safe. The school should change their rules if they want people to follow the rules.
The rules that they have currently have been demonstrated to be ineffective at keeping students safe and that students would be safer if they can defend themselves. Forbidding students from having guns is simply incompetent. students deserve a way to defend themselves and I cant see why the school wouldn't want them to have guns. students aren't going to start randomly shooting at people just because they have guns, and anyone who did would just break the rules like this student and do it anyway. this rule leaves students practically defenseless.
