Pre-AP English 9 Current Events Blog for Week of September 21

Read the following article that discusses the influx of Syrian refugees into countries across Europe:

http://news.yahoo.com/east-european-leaders-argue-migrants-pour-across-borders-143858423.html

Look at this map to get an idea where Syria is in relation to the European Union.

Answer the following questions related to the article:
1. How is Hungary trying to keep refugees from crossing its border?
2. Explain the journey that many refugees have been trying to make through the Mediterranean Sea.
3. In the four years since the Syrian civil war began, how many people have been displaced by the war either in their own country or to another country?
4. What does US Secretary of State John Kerry say is "preventing this crisis from ending"?
5. How many refugees has President Barack Obama pledged to take in over the coming year?
6. Should the US allow these Syrian refugees into the country?  How responsible should the country be for helping to care for them while they are here?
7. Look at the first picture that is featured with this story (of the little boy in the train window).  Why do you think this picture is placed where it is?  What sort of impact does this picture have on people who are reading this article?

    1. Hungary is using metal fences, water cannons and tear gas.
    2. They have crossed through Turkey, to Greece and then up through the Balkans to former Yugoslavia.
    3. 4.4 million People have been displaced.
    4. They are missing countries with influence.
    5. President Obama has pledged to take in 10,000 refugees.
    6. The U.S can only let in a certain amount of people. It is Syria’s fault that they are in a war, so they need to be held accountable and be punished for all the refugees that are escaping because they are leaving the war, and I don’t blame them.
    7. They put it there because they want people to see how desperate these people are even before they read the article. It gives us an image of how desperate the refugees are.

    7. IT IS PLACED THERE FOR PEOPLE TO GET FEELINGS. THE REPORTER THOUGHT, " OH IF I PUT THIS HERE, PEOPLE WILL FEEL SORRY FOR THEM AND AGREE TO WHAT I AM SAYIING." THIS PICTURE DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SUPPOSED TO DO, GIVE PEOPLE THE FEELS.

    1. Hungary is using tear gas and water cannons along their southern border.

    2. Many refugees have been trying to paddle through the Mediterranean sea to get to Europe.

    3. three million

    4.the negotiation

    5. ten-thousand

    6. I think the different countries should get together and form a plan on how to take care of the refugees because it is not fair for them to stay where they are and be treated poorly but one country shouldn't have on overwhelming number of refugees to be responsible for. I think they should try to create jobs and somewhere for them to live.

    7. I think they placed the picture where it is to give people an idea of the situations the kids and their families are in. The picture makes it more serious ,sad, and makes you soft-hearted towards the refugees.

    1. Hungary is trying to keep refugees from crossing its border by using a metal fence, tear gas, and a water cannon.

    2. The refugees move across the water from Turkey to Greece and then up through Balkans and then to Yugoslavia.

    3. 1,500 refugees have been taken in since the Syrian War began.

    4. US Secretary of State John Terry believes that the negotiation is what is preventing the crisis from ending.

    5. Barack Obama pledged to take in 10,000 refugees in the coming year.

    6. I believe the US should allow these Syrian refugees into the country. The US should be very responsible at caring for these refugees because everyone gets treated equally in the United States.

    7. I believe this picture is placed where it is so that readers can create a soft bond with the whole article's purpose. This picture however, could create a weird impact on readers because it is making the little boy look poor, which may make readers uncomfortable.

    6. I think the US should allow the refugees in the country, and I think that we should provide vaccinations and to some extent housing and food. I do think we should have a limit on how many refugees we let in and make sure we are prepared for the amount we are letting in.
    7. I think it is put there to set a sympathetic mood on the article. It makes the reader more empathetic to the refugees.

    6. I think that the US should allow the refuges into the country because they need shelter. The country should be responsible for feeding them and making sure that they are healthy, but not to the point where they're being treated like they can't take care of themselves.
    7. I think the picture is placed where it is because it captures people's attention of what it really looks like to need shelter and help, and it gives the impact on people that this is more of a serious issue.

    6. The US should allow them into the country because this country is based on the idea of people from all over the world coming here and mixing cultures, traditions, etc. I mean, the united states was colonized by people who wanted to escape from their homeland (Great Britain) so it would be ironic if we didn't let the Syrian refugees into the country. Although, i think that the country shouldn't be that responsible for taking care of them.

    6. Yes, I think we should take some in and help them get on their feet if they're going to stay here, or help a lot who could stay until peace.
    7. I think the picture is placed there, so people realize that it's not all political, but about actual innocent people and children. This picture softens the reader's heart before reading, so they aren't just like, "We can't allow a bunch of immigrants it'll limit our jobs." The picture helps show us we need to be helping them.

    5. 10,000.
    6. I believe that, as the richest country in the world, we have a responsibility to help war-torn and poor countries, such as Syria, and their refugees. Although I don’t believe that we should just ship them all over here, we should at least try to support them. As for the refugees who do end up coming to America, I think that we should help them but not pay for everything they do. These people should be given opportunities to start a new life, not an opportunity to live off our government.
    7. I think that picture was placed at the beginning of the article so that the reader would immediately emphasize with the refugees. And yes, I do think it has an impact on how people read this article. Who would look at a sad little war refugee boy and say, “Keep them out of our country!”

    3.) Over 160,000 refugees.
4.) The negotiation is what they need and they are hoping Russia and Iran, and any other countries with influence, will help to bring about that.
    5.) Approximately 10,000 more.
6.) I don’t think we should let the refugees into our country. I believe that because Syria is not the friendliest country to us. I don’t think we would be able to determine if there are terrorists in all of the refugees because the United States and Syria aren’t sister countries. I think we should make our country strong and figure out all the terrorists and problems before we take on something as big as refugees from another country. I don’t think we should be that responsible for their care, we should focus on our citizens before non US citizens.
7.) I think this picture is posted here for a reason and that is because this might be one of the first thing they see when they look at the article and it could change the way you think about the article. I think it could make people feel worse for the refugees of Syria and it would make them second guess themselves in terms of what they believe is the right thing to do.

6.Yes, because these refugees are just like the rest of Americans. Most of our ancestors came from a different country and being here gave us freedoms and opportunities that some countries don’t offer. I think the country could care for them just like they care for us. Under the age of 18, they are considered a child in the United States and they can receive help from the government. Adult refugees would need to work and probably learn enough English to communicate with employers.

7.I think this picture was placed at the beginning to show how this young boy’s life is changing so much just from getting the chance to leave his dangerous country. The impact of this picture is that it makes viewers show sympathy for the young boy without even knowing the back story. His emotions are quite ambiguous in the photo pertaining to if he is amazed that he is free of his home land or if he is scared of what is awaiting him in his new surroundings.

    1) They have a metal fence and used tear gas along with a water cannon to block their southern border.
    2) "across the water from Turkey to Greece and then up through the impoverished Balkans to the former Yugoslavia, of which Croatia and Slovenia are members of the EU."
    3) 3 million.
    4) That there has not been a negotiation about the war and the refugee problems. He is hoping that countries like Russia and Iran will help.
    5) 10,000.
    6) I think that they should be allowed in but only for the right reasons and with the proper background checks. They should be allowed to get into the country...LEGALLY. I believe that this relates and is the same as immigrants entering the U.S. If you become a legal citizen of that certain country, then that country should then have a responsibility to help care for you.
    7) I think that this picture is placed at the very top to grab the reader's attention and make them want to read more. Some people show their soft side when it comes to kids, even more so when it involves dangerous journeys and terrible risks. This picture makes the reader feel for the children and their families. It is acting like one of those commercials that you see on T.V. about feeding the children overseas. In this article, it makes t=you want to read about what is going on that is causing all of this anyway. It is acting as the "hook sentence" of an introductory paragraph.

  27. 1. Hungary used a metal fence, tear gas and water cannons to keep refugees from crossing the border.
    2. Their journey trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea has been tough. The rough waves of the sea, engine failure from the boats and even death.
    3. Around three million people have been displaced since the Syrian War.
    4. Little to no negotiation from the country and no influence from Russian or Iran is preventing it from ending.
    5. President Obama has pledged to take 10,000 more refugees.
    6. Some part of me believes that the U.S should allow these refugees to enter. If we allowed them to enter, they would have a much better life here than they would in Syria. There would be better education and economic opportunities for them. Then the other half of me says no. If we allowed them to come here, would that just create bigger problems to the one we are trying to help end. Would they just take advantage of the opportunity if it was given to them. At first, the country should be responsible for them (helping them with housing, food, money/jobs, etc) for a period of them. Then, after that period, the country should no have to take care of them.
    7. I believe that it is placed there to show that not only are adults trying to escape, but also children and the tough times they are going through. It’s supposed to have a lasting impact. To make you feel “bad” for the situation that they’re going through right now.

    1) Hungary is using metal fences, tear gas, and water cannons on its southern border with Serbia to bar their route into their country.
    2) The immigrants have been trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Turkey to Greece and then up through the Balkans to Croatia and Slovenia. Almost 500,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean to Europe so far this year.
    3) An estimated three million Syrians have fled the war and many more are displaced inside their country.
    4) We need to get to the negotiation. That is what we're asking for help from Russia and Iran, and any other countries with influence, to help end the war.
    5) 10,000 more over the coming year.
    6) I believe that the United States should not allow any refugees into the country because it could become a huge security risk, because terrorists could gain easy access into the country by blending in with the refugees and begin to spread death and destruction in the US. The country should look after the refugees very carefully and make sure they get a lot of care and hopefully get as many of them out of the country and back to their homeland once they negotiate a treaty and everything becomes peaceful again.
    7) The picture depicts the death and despair of what is going on in the Middle East and that it is not something that should be taken lightly and is a very serious matter. The little boy is leaving everything that he has ever known in the hopes of finding a better life in a new country. It really touches readers that we have it easy here in America while all around us people are fighting to survive one day at a time. A lot of the refugees have to think when are they going to have their next meal or where are they going to sleep tonight when all we have to do is go to the refrigerator to get something to eat or just go to our own bed in our own room. I believe that the picture really shows people the world is not so perfect after all.

    6. No they should not! This country is falling apart enough already. We don't need another 12,000 mouths to feed and house. This country doesn't have the money being in debt 16 trillion dollars. And with the fact that all the terrorist attacks don't make the refugees look any better. We have enough people coming into this country illegally across the border.

    6. Yes, the U.S. should allow the refugees into the country. They left Syria to look for a better life, with nowhere else to go (since the European Union seem to be pushing them out of their countries), and America is known for being The Land of Opportunities. We should provide them with their basic necessities and some money to begin with and then after a few months, let them provide for themselves as normal citizens.
    7. This picture is placed at the beginning of the article most likely for the reader to connect the devastating information about what Hungary is doing to the refugees at their border and the look of heartbreak on the little boy’s face. Hungary uses water filled cannons, wired fence, and tear gas to keep refugees from crossing their borders. The refugees got smart though, they use their hands to paddle 6 miles through the entire night through the Mediterranean Sea. 4.4 million people have been displaced since the civil war has started in Syrian. I think the U.S. should help these refugees. Iran, Russia, and other countries need to help as well. They should help anyway they can. Obama has pledged 10,000 refugees into our country. Since Obama pledged them in, then yes. He should make sure they get a job and then let them support themselves. The Little boy represents the sadness and disbelief for their country as they leave the destroyed cities.
