Pre-AP English 9 Current Events Blog for Week of October 10

Read the following article:

http://mic.com/articles/101056/an-inspiring-teen-girl-took-a-creative-stand-against-bullying-her-school-wasn-t-happy

Answer the following questions:

1. In what city and country does this story take place?
2. What incident caused Caitlin to want to post all of her positive messages?
3. Who voted to make "Positive Post-It Day" an official holiday?
4. In your opinion, can the school's actions toward Caitlin be justified at all?  If so, how?  If not, why do you think that they were so quick to act the way they did?
5. Do you believe that this article is biased in any way.  In other words, does it portray Caitlin and her circumstances in a completely objective and even way, or does the article's author have a pre-existing opinion about Caitlin and her circumstances?

    1) This story takes place in Airdrie, Canada.
    2) The reason Caitlin posted all of her positive messages was because she had been the victim of a recent bullying incident.
    3) The Airdrie city council voted to make "Positive Post-It Day" an official holiday.
    4) I don't think that the school's actions can be justified at all. They took Caitlin's bullying incident very lightly and took absolutely NO action towards preventing it from happening again. But they made SURE that they handled this "littering" incident. I would understand if they were slightly concerned that Post-Its would be all over the floors around the school, but they failed to recognize the beauty in this small act. A small act like Caitlin's could change the whole course of someone's day.
    5) The author definitely has a pre-existing opinion about this story; one that I fully agree with. The author seems to encourage Caitlin and her actions and is patronizing the school. The first sentence in this article displays her pre-existing opinion.

  2. Carter Billings 3rd (1 Airdrie, Canada (2 Someone broke into her locker, and used her iPad to post things on Facebook telling her to kill herself. (3 The Airdrie city council (4 To me the schools actions in no way, shape, or form can be justified. Even if kids were throwing them on the ground she is trying to give a positive message. The only reason I can see the school acting the way they did is because the post-it notes caused an uproar in the school, and they needed to pacify it. (5 Yes, I think that this article is biased and it supports Caitlin. Through out the article the author says things like "The news: Bullying is fine, and God forbid someone tries to speak out against it in a positive, creative way" this is an example of how the other is biased.

    4. no I don't believe the schools actions were justified at all. I believe that the post it notes became a threat to them because they didn't want media to see that students are doing things about bullying and they aren't, or they just didn't want to pick the sticky notes up.
    5. To a certain extent, yes. Anyone can look at this article can relate to it if they have been bullied and automatically side on Caitlin's side. but I believe its more than just a biased opinion, its your morality kicking in, when someone is trying to be positive about an ongoing thing and they do something like that, its hard not to side with her.

    1) Airdie
    2) Someone hacked her ipad and told her to kill herself.
    3) The Airdrie city council
    4) NOT AT ALL, they tell us to stand for something, because if we don't stand for something, we'll fall for anything. But when a girl stands up for herself and against idiotic people, she is punished with "littering". I believe the school administrators were so swift to dispense the injustice because they didn't want viral recognition , which is what they ended up with anyway.
    5) No, this article isn't biased at all. It just shows a girl with character standing up for herself.

    2. Someone broke into her locker, got on her Facebook account, and prompted her to commit suicide.
    3. Airdrie's city council
    4. I don't think that their actions were reasonable, but I think that they can be justified. I can see how some kids would throw the post-it notes on the floor rather than in the trash can. That would definitely be a problem for the custodians.
    5. I think the article takes on a subjective form, obviously in favor of Caitlin, although I don't see this as a bad thing. Most people will have the same opinion as the author of the article. Anyone who holds a different opinion will have a hard time justifying it.

    2) someone hacked into her Facebook and posted something telling her to kill herself.
    3) Airdrie city council
    4) No, Caitlin was trying to spread positivity so no one would feel the way she did when she was bullied. i believe the school punished her so there wouldn't be any more attention brought to the incident, so they would look better.
    5) the article was biased towards Caitlin, although the school was wrong to punish her, they most likely had reasons.the author might be passionate about standing up against bulling, so they felt the need to take Caitlin side.

    4. In my opinion, the school's actions are not justified by any means. I think
the school didn't see the good that came from this, so they just decided
to punish her fro no reason.
    5. I think the author was bias in a way, but to be honest, I think they had
    a right to be.

    5. i think she took the stance that this girl was trying to make a change and she didnt let the school stop her.

    2. Caitlin was bullied the month before by someone breaking into her locker, getting her iPad, and posting on her Facebook telling her to kill herself; so from this Caitlin wanted to help others who may be going through some of the same things.
    3.The Airdrie city council
    4. In my opinion, I think the school should have helped Caitlin with her bullying problem in the first place. Also, I think the school should have let her put all of the post-it notes up because it was only encouraging students and what school doesn't want a positive group of students?
5.I think that this article is a little biased towards Caitlin, but in a good way. They are supporting her for standing up for herself. Also, they are explaining how the post-it notes are a good ideas.

    2. Someone had bullied her earlier and she realized that bullying is taken more lightly than it should be.

    3. The Airdrie city council.

    4. No, they should not have been justified, they should have been encouraged. I honestly have no idea why the school would react in such a way.

    5. I think that the author of the article is being impartial. But, it should have included something about how large or small the amount of post its was left in the school.

    2. Because a girl at her school was bullied by someone typing "kill yourself" on her facebook.
    3. Airdrie city council
    4. They did not have the right to confront Caitlin about the positive notes and yell at her about them. She did absolutely nothing wrong. She did everything right, including lifting up others people's spirits and I love that. Because I have always hated bullying and I support treating everyone the same despite appearance, background, etc. EVERYONE deserves to be loved and have respect no matter how they act. Everyone is beautiful and was born for a reason- to make a difference in the world or just simply to make an effect in someones life. So I think the teachers had no right to yell at Caitlin for trying to be positive. They can back off, because kindness is a wonderful thing and its way more important than 'littering'.
    5. I think the author of this article completely agrees with Caitlin and her supporters. Because she describes Caitlin's post-it note idea as 'a powerful message'. And she described the school's response to Caitlin 'disappointing'. So I think the author thinks what Caitlin did was completely appropriate and nice.

    I- Airdrie, Canada
II- A personal experience with a person who gained access to her iPad and posted somewhat morbid things on pointless social media
    III- the Airdrie city council
IV- The school is fine for what they did in the right light. Naturally, everyone would say, "Oh my God, this girl is so inspirational, we should totally endorse this! We need more people like her!''. Well sure, it's great attempt to make a (minuscule) difference there, but in the end it doesn't matter. There are plenty of cases where something as uplifting as this has occurred, but why THIS has been given so much attention is beyond me. Nothing like this has ever made a difference, why should this? It's just another irrelevant happening in the world that won't amount to anything monumental, and above all, an eight-hundred fifty page mess to clean up. Does she need to be punished? No, just let her pick that crap up and it'll be enough to shake her senses to a realization that you can't change, nor even really make a dent in this human nature.
V- It seems to me like the author is biased toward this girl and her act of well.... whatever you call it. She (Eileen) shines too much light on just one side, of course she wouldn't have much of a choice, because shedding anything but positive ray on this situation is deemed pessimistic (I guess it is) and inadmissible. Whatever the case may be, there seemed to be pre-existing thoughts on this case.

    1.) Airdrie, Canada

2.) A fellow classmate broke into her locker, stole her iPod and wrote a message on her facebook telling her to kill themselves.

    3.) Airdrie city council

4.) Personally I believe that cant be justified. I feel that they did this because they didn't want to draw attention to the fact that they did absolutely nothing about her getting bullied. If that spread to much and people knew about it they could possibly get in trouble or what not. Also technically she wasn't "littering", because littering pretty much refers to the ground last time I checked and she was putting them on lockers etc. not the floor. What they did to her was extremely uncalled and also immature. It honestly sickens me to know those adults wont do anything about bullying

5.) I guess in ways it could be biased but its not judgmentally biased or anything. They just didn't get any words from the school/advisers is all.

4- I believe that it was not right for them to not do anything when Caitlin was bullied; but when she was trying to lift someone up who was also bullied by giving them a nice note, she was punished for it. I don't think its right to punish someone who was trying to make someone else feel better.
5- The author does not have a pre-existing opinion of Caitlin.

4 No, because Caitlyn was trying to turn what happened to her into a positive thing and act out peacefully against bullying and they call it "littering." I think they acted so quickly because they knew it looked bad on them because they did nothing to help her and she turned the terrible thing gat happened to her into something good.
5 Yes, I do because the author obviously agrees with what Caitlyn did because of the way he or she speaks when they bring up the school reprimanding her. Also, the author speaks with a very positive time when speaking about what Caitlyn did.

5.yes I think that the author was biased bevause anyone can read the article and feel sorry for what Caitlin had gone through and not take the schools side because they didnt help her or do anything to bully.

    4. I believe that the schools actions have no justification at all. If the school actually cares about the school and it's pupils, they would actually care when someone is severely bullied, which is extremely negative, and instead decided to focus on sticky notes that all shared positive messages.
    5. I believe that there is some bias to this article, but it still doesn't stray from the facts. The fact is, Caitlin was bullied and the school did nothing to help her, and when she did something positive she was punished.

    3.The Airdrie City Council
    4. No, there should be no justifying the problem that the school caused. One of their students was involved and they did nothing but make the situation worse. It was totally wrong on their part .
    5. No, I do not think that the article is biased at all. The author could've been a tad bit biased but he very well executed the story in a nonbiased format. He strongly executed the point and got the point across without being extremely biased.
