Pre-AP English 9 Current Events Blog for Week of September 22

For this week's current events blog, you are going to be the researcher and reporter.  In order to receive credit for this blog, you must follow the instructions explicitly and exactly.

You need to research various news websites and try to find a news story that relates to one of the following hot-button topics:  the on-going fight between the Ukraine and Russia or the United States' on-going concerns with its Mexican borders.

After you have found your story, go to the comment section of this post (just like you always do) and paste the ENTIRE URL link to your story, along with a paragraph-long summary of your story.  After you summarize your story, write a "debate-able" question that we discuss as a class next Monday.

Failure to abide by these specific instructions will result in no credit for your blog post.  Happy researching!

In this article the subject is security on our Mexican borders. The subject has been brought up many times in legislative debates but now holds a new position because of the menace of the groups ISIS and ISIL. The Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has issued a campaign for the issue. The stakes have become higher with the extreme acts issued on American captives. There have been no know acts of added security on the borders even considering the circumstances. The groups place a huge peril with the large amounts of soldiers and frequent attacks.

The question i give to you is do we need more security on our borders? why or why not?

    http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-02-21/the-u-dot-s-dot-mexico-border-got-secured-dot-problem-solved

The United States has had an ongoing problem with their Mexican border.
In 2007 the number of illegal immigrants (caught in the act) was estimated to be around 850,000. Obama has spent almost one hundred billion dollars on legal border enforcement and protection and security for the border. There are still many legal and illegal border crossings, although jobs for immigrants have been majorly declined. This creates almost no reason for illegal immigrants to come to the US in my opinion. In Sothern California triple fence systems have been in use, which leads more Mexicans have to try and cross the deadly terrain of the Arizona Desert. Last year many legal and illegal immigrants returned back to their original homes.

Debate Question: Should legal Mexican immigrants be forced to go back to Mexico???

In this article, the reporter is discussing how even though the war between Ukraine and Russia is over, the Russians still have the upper hand because they supply the Ukrainians with the gas they need. With winter approaching fairly quickly, the Russians are testing the Ukrainians desire to remain truly independent. Because of this, the U.S. is trying to provide a way to keep the Ukrainians warm in the upcoming season, though we are trying there really is no way for us to help Ukraine meet the gas shortfall they soon will be facing. However, there are some simple, cheap bridges Ukraine could burn themselves. Some of these would be "upgrading Ukraine’s decaying and outdated pipeline infrastructure, replacing aging boilers with modern, more efficient models, and improving metering and measurement systems".

Debatable Question : Due to the current crisis with ISIS/ISIL, should America just fall back from the Ukrainian and Russian situation, or should America continue to be in the middle which could potentially hurt her?

Ukraine has been having problems with pro-Russian separatists harming Ukrainian soldiers along the border. Russia is also performing military exercises on Ukraine's side of the border. 3 soldiers were killed and 64 were wounded in 24 hours in the actions against the separatists. The government started a war with the rebels in April. Ukrainian forces claim to have made steady games. While separatists declared a "state of siege" in Donetsk, the largest city that they hold.

Do you believe that Russia could take further actions to out an end to the rebels?

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ukraine-dissolves-parliament-amid-ongoing-fight-against-pro-russian-insurgents/

The Ukraine is holding early elections in order to cleanse their parliament. They are cleansing it because many members of their parliament are Pro-Russian rebels who have battled the Ukraine Troops in the east. The president of the Ukraine said it would be hard to hold elections on such short notice because many of the citizens have fled their homes to escape the danger that the invading Russians bring.

Is it right for the Ukrainian President to hold an election early and in the middle of a war?

  6. Carter Billings 3rd http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-29342463 The situation between Russia and Ukraine has been on going and tough for both sides. Recently the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) has reported the pull back of Russian troops from Ukraine. Although, many Russian troops remain at the border of or in Ukraine. Ukraine is trying to set up a democracy and economy and they are backed by the United Nations and America, but Russia is opposing this. Russian rebels and Russians oppose the central government in Kiev. In a attempt to stop Russia from fighting Ukraine sanctions have been set on Russia, and will be lifted if they "take the path of peace and diplomacy". Both sides have agreed to make a 30 km (19 miles) buffer zone in an effort to stop the fighting. Debate Question If Russian troops remain in Ukraine, should the Ukrainian government step in and remove the Russian troops or should the government not mind if the troops are not are not attacking?

Summary: Our borders weren't always as hard to control as they are now. Immigration now affects almost every aspect of our daily lives in the U.S. In 1965 our border control caught more than 110,000 and the number has continued to rise since then. The most often used places to cross the border by illegal immigrants were in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California. There were fences around all of these locations but Border Patrol is low in all of these areas, but was soon changed because they realized that those places were the central places Mexicans were coming in. Some recent changes in the bordering issues was that they heightened security so it was even harder for them to get through. Although people are still getting through, there isn't as many as there were in 1965. Some schools are having to hire bilingual teachers because of all of the Mexicans coming into the schools and trying to get an education without speaking any English.

Debatable question: If you were on the Border Patrol, would you let the Mexicans cross the border legally?

Ukraine and Russia have been fighting for awhile. Ukraine is trying to defend itself from Russia. Russia says they do not want others on their territory and they want it to be secure. The leader of Russia is Vladimir Putin and the U.S. and Ukraine have had problems with him before. Russia is pretty much trying to take down Ukraine. We are concerned that the Cold War may begin again between Ukraine and Russia. And I think it definitely will if their issues and disputes are not solved soon. Ukraine is asking for U.S. aid to help stop Russia. Ukraine is fighting strong and states that they will not be taken down. They are going to fight as hard as they can.

Do you think the U.S. should give Ukraine aid, or do you think the U.S. should just focus on fighting ISIS mostly right now?

The US is debating whether to use military force and stop the Ukraine from entering in on medicos borders. There are debates on whether we are wasting enough of our military force on the Ukraine already. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CAwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtontimes.com%2Fnews%2F2014%2Fsep%2F7%2Ffein-national-borders-are-not-inviolate%2F&ei=LZwkVJ2JB5SONqX0gdAB&usg=AFQjCNGZNKZYfPfaiHzbFt1o4mNs7Q0fJw

in this article Russia and Ukraine both tell their sides of the story. the article also informs you about the sanctions set to Russia by the European union. this article also shows how the feud between Ukraine and Russia began. It also states what Americas opinion on the crisis is.
    1. Do you think that the sanctions that were sent to Russia by the European union will stop Russia, why or why not?

I decided to do my CE on the growing problems by the United-States-Mexico border problems. This is the link: http://www.kswt.com/category/109201/on-the-border-latest-usmexico-border-news-and-info
Several problem varieties plague the controversial border between the United States and Mexico. The most common of these is the infamous drug trafficking network that has accumulated on the border like frost on a car windshield. The vast trade is widely dangerous as various cartels vie for "control of the flow". In addition to narcotics, human trafficking is also an increasing problem. Illegal immigrants sneak their way into the US on a daily basis, and we're doing everything we can to stop it, but as kingpins rise and good people break bad, it gets harder and harder to see the light at the end of this cruel tunnel.
My debate question: Should the US divert more attention towards the border, or secular, oversea affairs such as the ISIS and ISIL?

Ukraine's Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, advises the West to not lift punishments on Russia until his country recovers control of all its territory. US President Barack Obama said punishments could be lifted if Russia carries a truce between Ukraine and separatist freedom fighters in the east. 3,245 people have been murdered since fighting between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russia separatists began in April. Yatsenyuk said, “Every day, despite the ceasefire, we are losing Ukrainian soldiers, we are losing civilians. You can win the fight against the troops, but you will never win the fight against the... united Ukraine nation. Mr Obama denounced Russian activity in Ukraine, but said that if Russia took the tranquility path, "then we will lift our punishments and bring in Russia's role in inscribing usual summons".
    - If you were a Prime Minister of a country, how would you feel if another direction of a speciifc place had raised the punishments without your permission or to just do it to aggravate you? How would you handle the situation?

The article I have chosen beholds a very different standpoint from which most people hold on the issues of Ukraine and Russia. It mainly outlines how the mainstream media, which is owned by the most illustrious companies in the world, is demonizing Vladmir Putin to lessen his credibility as a foreign leader, and hence making it seemingly justifiable to "protect" the Ukraine. I think that this article will make for a spicy debate, nonetheless.
    My question is,
After reading this article, it is clear to see that the author has a vastly different view of secular affairs compared to that of corporate mainstream media. Whose opinion do you stand by, and why?

U.S. and Mexico's presidents are close allies, but when the U.S. is more worried about what's going on in the Russia and the Middle East, the Mexican president is in charge of relating to the governors of the U.S. states. The Mexican president, Enrique Pena Nieto, visits many camps to try to be involved with them. Some camps like California are on Nieto's good side because California has helped with immigrants from Mexico. However, other camps such as Texas, who has a leader, Rick Perry, who wants to be against Mexico aren't in the best position with Mexico. Soon Perry investigates and says that there is a great possibility that ISIS has entered through the U.S. Mexican Border but there is no proof or evidence of it. A Mexican Secretary is not pleased with this statement made by Perry, she thought it was very absurd and dangerous. Since Perry is a border governor, his statement is very risky for the U.S.'s relationship with Mexico.

Do you think Perry's statement will or will not affect the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico? If so why do you think that?

U.S. Border maintenance and patrol are concerned about the children crossing the border by themselves. "A Homeland Security official told The Associated Press that about 2,000 mattresses have been ordered to the makeshift holding center — a warehouse that has not been used to house people in years," says Dave Urbanski, writer of the article.
Should the U.S. continue to worry about other worldly affairs or focus on problems at home, such as the border?

The Ukraine has urged the U.S. no to remove the sanctions that they have placed on Russia. Troops went into Ukraine and took control of Crimea in April and U.N. officials say that over 3,000 people have died as a direct result of this fighting. Although Russia and the Ukraine have reached an unsteady cease fire, the Ukrainian Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk encourages the U.S. to continue the sanctions until the Ukraine has gotten Crimea back under Ukrainian control. The U.S. says that they will lift their sanctions and welcome Russia's role in adressing common challenges.

Continuing with the sanctions has an okay chance at working but, is not fully supported by all countries of the U.N. Should the US continue with the sanctions as the Ukraine suggests, or should they stop them as soon as Russia becomes peaceful enough to talk to?

This story is about the increase of citizen based law enforcement that are beginning to patrol the Mexican border. Even though the militia members are against using force, critics warn that the use of these armies could have disastrous consequences. On the other hand, people who hire and are in support of the militia say that it gives them a sense of peace.
It is ever right for citizens to take the law into their own hands?
