    http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/03/world/africa/last-chance-disappearing-glaciers/index.html?hpt=wo_t5

Africa has three, main mountains that produce beautiful glaciers each year. Now however, Richard Taylor, a geology professor believes that the glaciers will be no more by 2030. Taylor states that "the glaciers (melting) indicate a rise in temperature in the region, and a warmer environment leads to an intensification of the rainfall systems,...what that means is longer droughts and more intense floods." This is very bad news for locals who depend on water from alpine rivers to inundate their crops and produce hydroelectricity. The disappearing glaciers also cause problems that the alpine climate reduced, such as a higher rates of malaria. Then rare plants in the summit are expected to disappear as well.

A family of four was hundreds of miles off of the Mexican coast when their sailboat broke down. When this happened their 1-year old daughter, Lyra Kaufman got ill and was not responding to medication. They did not have communication abilities but they sent a satellite call to U.S. Coast Guard to help them. Four California Air National Guard came and helped Lyra until the whole family was placed on the Nay fringe. The family is safe and Lyra is in stable condition thankfully with the help of the Navy. http://www.newsday.com/news/world/navy-warship-reaches-sailboat-carrying-ill-toddler-1.7623254

In a report released by the Center for Disease Control today, the U.S. teen birth rate is now at a historic low. The rate has gone down 63% over the last 20 years, but the rate is still not low enough, with 1700 babies being born every week. The rates are highest among minorities, the highest of these, Hispanics. Teen mothers have a lower chance of graduating and getting their GED on time.

    http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/04/08/where-the-streets-have-no-children/?_php=true&_type=blogs&ref=world&_r=0

La Ciénega is a town that has only 11 people in it, and has no children. The hilly village has 300 abandoned homes, and even the deer who had once been there have mostly left. La Ciénega’s name refers to a spring-fed marsh; however a 7 year drought began in the 1970's and led to a huge exodus(look at that WOTD usage #EC) of residents, who managed to live through farming and livestock. There was no work, money or future, and hundreds of people left for other cities. However those who remained had the idea to stay there until rain came back. However, the rain never came back. All that's left is elderly die-hard townspeople. The people who lived there lived in cramped mattresses and poor living conditions, and the journalist brought attention to the matter and new mattresses were delivered, and 2 families... with CHILDREN moved in while they use heavy machinery to build roads, and oil pipelines, however when they are done so will the new families will leave as well. “They know when they die, this universe is over, Maybe that’s why I feel they are fighting to stay on, to not die, because it will end.” -Mr Marcos.

I believe that last quote is something we should all live by, even though our fate is in God's hand, we should never give up in life, we should always fight till we die because this is the only time you get to experience on Earth, and while Heaven may be better, there's no experience like Earth because it's different than Heaven and we need to make our time here count, and fight till the end.

I think what these people are doing is actually quite heroic, brave, and compassionate. They are staying in a ghost town to keep on the legacy of the town, even in their old age instead of going somewhere closer with more civilization and industrialization. They could be closer to a hospital right now where at the span of a few minutes they could be getting aid if something happens but they choose to remain in a town with nothing up-to-date like computers, cell phones, internet-- anything. They just have themselves and others to get by the day. This also displays patriotism because they are devoted to staying where they are and love where they are.

on April 9th a 16 year old Alex Hribal stabbed 20 students and a security guard at his school in Murrysville Pennsylvania. he was held on 21 counts of aggravated assault, 4 counts of criminal attempt and 1 for carrying a prohibited weapon. No one knows why he did it, and Shane Molneaux quoted that "He was somewhat friendly. He was very smart, he was not bullied and he did not seem like a mean kid. He did have friends." he left his home Wednesday morning and arrived at school with two 8" long straight knives. Hribal was only able to get the knives into the school because of no metal detectors. he had no cellphone but did have a computer which the FBI took. At his home his father had no comment other than sending out prayers to all those involved.

On the Mexico-Texas border more than ever, illegal immigrant rates have soared. Even though guards stand patrol, the illegal immigrants, mostly women and children, still come across, into the US. The immigrants are mainly from Central America, coming all the way across Mexico. a lot of the immigrants seek asylum for gang-related infractions. This is due to the many people who have been allowed to stay in America. The word gets back to those still in places like Guatemala and Honduras. in reality, only about 34% of all people asking for asylum have been granted it. The increase in illegal immigrants has also increased the drug cartel's illegal activities. The immigrants try to cross the river in shallow places where the border patrol cannot reach.

Five kidnappers, four males and one female, kidnapped Frank Janssen and sent various texts and pictures to his wife threatening to torture him. The authorities suspect the reason behind the kidnapping was because his daughter, a prosecutor of violent crimes, prosecuted a man named Kelvin Melton who serves a life sentence for shooting a man in 2011.
It was figured out that Melton had a mobile device in his cell that he was using to contact the kidnappers.
The authorities located Janssen in Atlanta at the Forest Cove Apartments and the five people charged with the kidnapping are to make an appearance in court on Thursday.

  12. There was a 5-year-old boy named John Harvard playing outside with his 9-year-old brother in Riverside. A neighbor's pitbull was outside and ran straight for John. The 9-year-old tried to get the pitbull off of his little brother, but couldn't. He went to go get their dad since he couldn't do anything. When the dad came out, he might have shot the dog because he did shoot at it to get it off of his son. John Harvard was sent to St. Vincent's St. Clair Hospital and was pronounced dead. John's body is being sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville to have an autopsy. The pitbull that attacked the little boy has been sent to a local animal clinic and will be held there until the investigation is over. The mayor said that this is the first incident that has ever been filed about this pitbull.

Ebola is one of the deadliest virus in the world, it has a 90% fatality rate and is spreadable through contact with another person's blood, sweat, and face. Many medical groups around the world have been assigned to give aid to Guinea and Liberia (the towns effected by the virus) but have been unsuccessful in attempts to rid the towns of the virus, given that there is no specific treatment, vaccine, or cure.

Wednesday morning, Alex Hribal, a 16-year-old student of Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, carried two 8-to-10-inch kitchen knives into the school. Around 7a.m., he began to attack fellow students by stabbing and slicing them. The slashing ended when school assistant principal, Sam King, tackled the teen and a police officer cuffed him. 22 people were injured during Hribal's attack and some are facing life-threatening injuries. There is reportedly no account of bullying, leading to why Hribal's parents are so distraught. Hribal was charged as an adult with four counts of attempted criminal homicide, 21 counts of aggravated assault, and one count of possession of weapons on school property.

In Israel jellyfish population has drastically increased, so one Israeli company decided to use the jelly as an alternate for toilet paper and diapers. They realized the jellyfishes properties when researching a Swedish nuclear plant that had it's intake pipes clogged by jellyfish. Jellyfish can hold massive amounts of water without tearing. This is a much more economically safe method of paper products.

Childhood obesity has more than doubled since 1999. less than 1% of children fall in Class 3, which means their body max index if 140% or higher. 5.9% percent of children fall into Class 2. Obesity can lead to high cholesterol and bloodpressure problems and cause cause joint and bone problems later in life. Many obese children become obese adults because of their habits from their childhood. But there is a way to stop obesity from rising, By getting healthy and exercising, it can decrease numbers so childhood obesity will not rise.

In Rossendale Valley, Lancashire, England, John Hyatt, a Director at the Manchestor Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design, claims that fairies are real! His claim is that, while trying to take pictures of the sunset through the trees, he caught something interesting on camera. When going back to look at the pictures after taking them, he saw, after zooming in, what appeared to be very small faries! Professors and others aren't so easily convinced though. They are convinced that it is a hoax and compare it to the 1917 hoax done by children and cardboard cutouts. Hyatt stands by his statement despite disbelievers. What do you think?

They have come to believe that it has crashed into the Indian ocean. no one knows how or why yet, but they are still trying to get information. They have had more than 9 planes and 9 ships scour and look for any clues around the Indian ocean. More than 2/3 of the passengers were Chinese. Police are investigating the pilots and crew for any evidence suggesting they may have hijacked or sabotaged the plane. Police are also investigating the cargo and the food served on the plane to eliminate possible poisoning of passengers and crew. Many of the Chinese people have criticized the Malaysians of not giving enough information to of what may of happened or maybe lying. 24. In the society we live in today, technology is key in order to stay organized and caught up with friends. Social media is tied up into all of that as well, and the number one thing that is put out on social media today is of people taking 'selfies'. Not harmful, right? Wrong. Danny Bowman is a man that was diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder because of his addiction to taking selfies. Bowman shared that he had grown suicidal because he couldn't take the "right" selfie even though, on average, he would spend up to 10 hours a day taking 200 pictures of himself. Dr. David Veal, who tried to help Bowman, said that taking too many selfies may cause mental illness, including body dysmorphic disorder, which has an "extremely high suicide rate." Expert Dr. Pamela Rutledge also explained that taking selfies is indicative of narcissism, attention seeking behavior and self-indulgence. So as hard and as tempting as it may be, don't take too many selfies Mr. Ray!

On Monday at 1:51 a.m., Frank Arthur Janssen's wife, Christie, received text messages from a phone number with an Atlanta area code. The messages said her husband had been kidnapped, and if she were to contact law enforcement her husband would be hurt. Someone told law enforcement that that number belonged to an inmate. Law enforcement monitored calls between that number and another involved in the kidnapping. Law enforcement traced one of the phone numbers to a residence in Austell, Georgia, belonging to Tiana Maynard. Price led agents to the Forest Cove apartment complex in southeast Atlanta where Janssen was rescued. Janssen has been reunited with his family, and is receiving medical care. The FBI in Charlotte and Atlanta, the Wake Forest Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are continuing to investigate the case, along with other law enforcement agencies in North Carolina and Georgia.

In Alabama, the number of unmarried women having children is rising. There is a report from a research center that 42.6 percent in 2012 of the live births in Alabama were from women who were not married. This was a couple percentages greater than in 2010 and is still rising. Greene and Perry counties alone had 7 out of 10 women in 2012 that were not married. The center's director, Yanyi Djamba, says that counties with the highest birth rates to women unmarried usually have lower household incomes and higher rates of unemployment. Shelby county now has the lowest rate, but they are still rising in Alabama overall.

Twenty kids were hurt and one adult was also hurt. There were many people who were considered heroes at an incident like this. Students stepped up to help each other through this tough time, and Gracey Evans said that her hero (or her best friend) stepped in front of her and got stabbed instead. People became heroes because of this and they are hoping to get over this tragic event.

On March 8, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. There were 239 people aboard. Today, as well as in recent days, an underwater sensor has detected a man-made noise in the same portion of the Indian Ocean. The noise is believed to have come from a flight recorder, or "Black box." If searchers can pinpoint the exact location of the sound, a robotic submersible will be sent underwater to look for wreckage and any other devices from Flight 370. However, the search for the flight recorders is urgent because the batteries for the locator beacons within the devices are only meant to last for about a month at a time, and they may fail soon. Once the batteries are dead in the locator beacons, the Bluefin sub will be deployed. Unfortunately, the sounds of the recorders were coming from 14,763 feet below the surface which happens to be the deepest the Bluefin can dive. On the bright side, searchers have said that the wreckage more than likely did not fall into the narrow Diamantina trench-which is about 19,000 feet deep-because the sound detector cannot detect noise from that depth.

-Alex Hribal, a 16-year old at a high school in Pennsylvania stabbed 21 classmates and a security guard yesterday morning. Criminologists say he was pumped with adrenaline and rage pointed towards his victims. He stabbed 21 of his classmates using two butter knives, none were killed but all were severely injured. His parents say he has no criminal record, and his lawyer describes him as a shy nice young man, not someone capable of brutally stabbing 21 high schoolers. One of the victims parents believed Alex was bullied, and if someone had stepped in and said something for him, maybe things would be different.

    Ukraine-Russia gas row
Russia threatens to cut gas supplies to Ukraine because of their differences between pricing. This highly effects the EU countries because as much Russian gas is delivered through the west or Ukraine. Ukraine has a very high gas bill, that has not been paid and has caused a quick depute with them and Gazprom(Russia's utility). they have a bill of $2.2bn(1.4bn euros) of unpaid gas, according to Gazprom. if Ukraine doesn't pay their bill Gazprom will install a pre-pay meter so that they will have to pay in advance. if Ukraine fails to pay for it, Gazprom will suspend their delivery to them. Ukraine's president opts the situation by not signing the association agreement to pay for the gas, but Gazprom raised the price Ukraine will have to pay for gas in the future by 81%. Ukraine's gas imports were subsided by Russia's naval base lease, and since Russia annexed Crimea, the agreement is not able nor is it valid.
